Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,00, University of Göttingen (Seminar für Englische Philologie ), course: Multiethnic Britain, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction 1.1. Brief introduction to home and belonging as a general idea Home has a significant function in our lives. Thinking of home we associate notions like shelter and comfort and when we come home we want to feel safe and welcome. John McLeod argues in this sense that "to be 'at home' is to occupy a location where we are welcome, where we can be with people very much like ourselves."1 We are looking for who we are, where we come from and try to find our place in life. When one is born in a country but moves to another where is one's home country then? This question is hard to answer, because migration is always a process which implies a struggle of identities. When the 2nd generation is born in the host country- where do they belong if the host country does not accept them as full members? The term home is highly complicated in a complex and multicultural world like ours. 1.2. Procedure and approach of my analyses I have centered my term paper on an attempt to identify and characterize the concepts of home and belonging in postcolonial literature. Comparing how the idea of home and belonging is presented in the novels White Teeth by Zadie Smith and Small Island by Andrea Levy, I have tried a text- extrinsic approach. Furthermore, I have analysed the authors' intentions with regard to the time of publication and the time of the narrative. However, the main aspect of my analyses is which concepts of home and belonging exist and which of them can be found in the novels of my comparison. I have chosen White Teeth because it is a novel that deals with the colonial past and the postcolonial present and I have selected Small Island because it is a novel that deals with migration in the past. Small Island is set at the beginnin

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 3,0, Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, language: English, abstract: In terms of Postcolonial Studies "The Thing Around Your Neck" and "The Arrangers of Marriage" by Adichie are interesting stories to analyse because both are connected to history, migration, the search for identity and the consequences of displacement. Adichie as a typical postcolonial writer provides her stories with realistic characters facing identity struggles as well as inner and outer bondages. Due to relocation and heteronomy in the context of imperialism and colonialism and the current development of increasing migration home and belonging were and are important determinants in life.
Book Synopsis Home, Memory and Belonging in Italian Postcolonial Literature by : Chiara Giuliani
Download or read book Home, Memory and Belonging in Italian Postcolonial Literature written by Chiara Giuliani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the meaning of home through the investigation of a series of public and private spaces recurrent in Italian postcolonial literature. The chapters, by respectively considering Termini train station in Rome, phone centres, the condominium, and the private spaces of the bathroom and the bedroom, investigate how migrant characters inhabit those places and turn them into familiar spaces of belonging. Home, Memory and Belonging in Italian Postcolonial Literature suggests “home spaces” as a possible lens to examine these specific places and a series of practices enacted by their inhabitants in order to feel at home. Drawing on a wide array of sources, this book focuses on the role played by memory in creating transnational connections between present and past locations and on how these connections shape migrants’ sense of self and migrants’ identity.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Home by : Rosemary Marangoly George
Download or read book The Politics of Home written by Rosemary Marangoly George and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Home draws attention to the multiple relocations that take place in literatures in English in the twentieth century by examining the changing representation of 'home' in such narratives. Through an exploration of imperial fiction, contemporary literary and cultural theory, and postcolonial narratives on belonging, Rosemary Marangoly George argues that complex literary allegiances are visible in textual reformulations of 'home' and that George's concept of 'global English' challenges the very logic of literary landscapes organised in accordance with national boundaries. Reading Englishwomen's narration of their success in the empire against Conrad's account of colonial masculine failure, Frederic Jameson alongside R. K. Narayan, Anita Desai and other contemporary Indian writers with the British Romantic poets in mind, Edward Said next to M. G. Vassanji and Jamacia Kincaid, and Conrad through Naipual and Ishiguro, The Politics of Home explores the privilege and pain underlying 'feeling at home' in literature.
