Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: DANS LE DOMAINE DE LA SIMULATION DES ENSEMBLES CONVERTISSEUR-MACHINE-COMMANDE (CMC), LE MODELE DE LA MACHINE DOIT ETRE PRECIS ET RAPIDE EN TEMPS DE CALCUL. LES MODELES EXISTANTS SONT GENERALEMENT BASES SUR LA TRANSFORMATION DE PARK CLASSIQUE (PHENOMENES LINEAIRES) OU MODIFIEE (PRISE EN COMPTE PARTIELLE DE LA SATURATION). NOTRE CONTRIBUTION DANS CE DOMAINE A CONSISTE PRINCIPALEMENT A PROPOSER UN MODELE DE PARK COUPLE A UN CALCUL DE CHAMPS (MAGNETOSTATIQUE, MAGNETODYNAMIQUE) DANS LE CAS DE LA MACHINE SYNCHRONE SATUREE. UNE ETUDE ANALYTIQUE A COMPLETE LA REPRESENTATION DES AMORTISSEURS. LE CALCUL DES PARAMETRES DE LA MACHINE A ETE AINSI OBTENU PUIS VALIDE. L'ETUDE A MONTRE QUE CES PARAMETRES VARIENT DE MANIERE SIGNIFICATIVE AVEC L'ETAT DE SATURATION MAGNETIQUE. OUTRE LES QUALITES DE RAPIDITE ET DE PRECISION, LE COUPLAGE DES MODELES DE PARK ET DE CALCUL DE CHAMPS PERMET EGALEMENT DE S'AFFRANCHIR D'ESSAIS SUR LA MACHINE. LE MODELE AINSI DETERMINE A ETE APPLIQUE A L'ETUDE DE LA MACHINE SYNCHRONE EN REGIME PERMANENT ET TRANSITOIRE. A CETTE APPROCHE, NOUS AVONS ASSOCIE UN MODELE AUX FLUX QUI PERMET DE TENIR COMPTE DES VARIATIONS DES PARAMETRES OBTENUS PAR LE CALCUL DE CHAMPS. NOUS AVONS ENSUITE INTRODUIT LE MODELE DE SATURATION DANS LA SIMULATION DES ENSEMBLES CMC. LES RESULTATS DE SIMULATION DE CES ENSEMBLES ONT ETE VALIDES PAR COMPARAISON AVEC LES MESURES EXPERIMENTALES. CETTE SIMULATION A PERMIS DE METTRE EN EVIDENCE L'EFFICACITE DE L'APPROCHE PROPOSEE EN TERME DE PRECISION ET DE RAPIDITE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the physics of hysteresis in magnetism and of the mathematical tools used to describe it. Hysteresis in Magnetism discusses from a unified viewpoint the relationsof hysteresis to Maxwells equations, equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, non-linear system dynamics, micromagnetics, and domain theory. These aspects are then applied to the interpretation of magnetization reversal mechanisms: coherent rotation and switching in magnetic particles, stochastic domain wall motion and the Barkhausen effect, coercivity mechanisms and magnetic viscosity, rate-dependent hysteresis and eddy-current losses. The book emphasizes the connection between basic physical ideas and phenomenological models of interest to applications, and, in particular, to the conceptual path going from Maxwells equations and thermodynamics to micromagnetics and to Preisach hysteresis modeling. The reader will get insight into the importance and role of hysteresis in magnetism; In particular, he will learn: which are the fingerprints of hysteresis in magnetism which are the situations in which hysteresis may appear how to describe mathematically these situations how to apply these descriptions to magnetic materials how to interpret and predict magnetic hysteresis phenomena observed experimentally

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book excerpt: When working in the highly technical fields of astronomy and the related space sciences, the practitioner is constantly confronted with a baffling array of different abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, and symbols. The identification and differentiation of these terms is a task which, all too often, can prove to be a near impossible one. With over 140,000 separate dictionary-style entries, and over 20 years in collation, StarBriefs 2001 represents the most comprehensive and accurately validated collection of abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, and symbols within astronomy, related space sciences and other related fields. As such, this invaluable reference source (and its companion volume, StarGuides 2001 should be on the reference shelf of every library, organisation or individual with any interest in these areas. Besides astronomy and space sciences, related fields such as aeronautics, aeronomy, astronautics, atmospheric sciences, chemistry, communications, computer sciences, data processing, education, electronics, engineering, energetics, environmental, geodesy, geophysics, information handling, management, mathematics, meteorology, optics, physics, remote sensing, and so on, are also covered when justified. In addition, there are separate sections devoted to Greek letters, mathematical symbols, special signs and characters, as well as to entries with a numerical prefix. Finally, terms in common use and/or of general interest have also been included where appropriate.

Book excerpt: This Special Publication has 24 papers with an international authorship, and is prefaced by an introductory overview which presents highlights in the field. The first section covers the acceptance by science of the reality of the falls of rock and metal from the sky, an account that takes the reader from BCE (before common era) to the nineteenth century. The second section details some of the world's most important collections in museums - their origins and development. The Smithsonian chapter also covers the astonishingly numerous finds in the cold desert of Antarctica by American search parties. There are also contributions covering the finds by Japanese parties in the Yamato mountains and the equally remarkable discoveries in the hot deserts of Australia, North Africa, Oman and the USA. The other seven chapters take the reader through the revolution in scientific research on meteoritics in the later part of the twentieth century, including terrestrial impact cratering and extraordinary showers of glass from the sky; tektites, now known to be Earth-impact-sourced. Finally, the short epilogue looks to the future.
