Book excerpt: Ce mémoire de thèse porte sur la conception et la réalisation de lasers à fibre de puissance fonctionnant autour de la longueur d'onde de 1 μm. Nous présentons tout d'abord les méthodes de fabrication et de caractérisation des fibres à double gaine, éléments essentiels du laser de puissance. Un modèle analytique est ensuite développé pour rendre compte des effets des différentes interactions rayonnement-matière dans les fibres amplificatrices à double gaine. Ce modèle est basé sur la conservation du flux de photons. Il permet, grâce à l'adjonction d'un terme de source transverse, de rendre compte de l'évolution des principales caractéristiques des fibres amplificatrices à double gaine (ESA, puissance de pompe, inversion de population...). Il est utilisé pour optimiser les paramètres des lasers envisagés et pour évaluer leurs performances potentielles. En particulier, l'inadaptation des fibres à double gaine pour l'amplification à 3 niveaux d'énergie est mise en évidence.Dans la partie consacrée aux expérimentation, nous décrivons d'abord un système original d'injection transverse de l'onde de pompe dans la gaine multimode de la fibre qui a permis d'atteindre des rendements de 80% tout en respectant les normes de qualification en vigueur. Nous étudions ensuite plusieurs solutions pour réaliser un laser à cavité photoinscrite, dopé ytterbium, fonctionnant en système à 3 niveaux pour émettre à 980 nm. Cependant, la concrétisation de ces projets se heurte à des limitations technologiques que nous identifions. Enfin, des lasers de puissance fonctionnant en système à quatre niveaux d'énergie et émettant plusieurs watts optiques sont fabriqués. Ces lasers sont utilisés comme source optique pour pomper des cavités Raman émettant dans la bande [1460 nm - 1480 nm]. La génération de raies Stokes (jusqu'au cinquième ordre) est assurée par plusieurs mètres de fibre optique à matrice germanosilicate.
