Book Synopsis Concentration and Power in the Food System by : Philip H. Howard
Download or read book Concentration and Power in the Food System written by Philip H. Howard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly every day brings news of another merger or acquisition involving the companies that control our food supply. Just how concentrated has this system become? At almost every key stage of the food system, four firms alone control 40% or more of the market, a level above which these companies have the power to drive up prices for consumers and reduce their rate of innovation. Researchers have identified additional problems resulting from these trends, including negative impacts on the environment, human health, and communities. This book reveals the dominant corporations, from the supermarket to the seed industry, and the extent of their control over markets. It also analyzes the strategies these firms are using to reshape society in order to further increase their power, particularly in terms of their bearing upon the more vulnerable sections of society, such as recent immigrants, ethnic minorities and those of lower socioeconomic status. Yet this study also shows that these trends are not inevitable. Opposed by numerous efforts, from microbreweries to seed saving networks, it explores how such opposition has encouraged the most powerful firms to make small but positive changes.

Download or read book Concentration and Power in the Food System written by Philip H. Howard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who controls what we eat? This book reveals how dominant corporations, from the supermarket to the seed industry, exert control over contemporary food systems. It analyzes the strategies these firms are using to reshape society in order to further increase their power, particularly in terms of their bearing upon the more vulnerable sections of society, such as recent immigrants, ethnic minorities and those of lower socioeconomic status. Yet this study also shows that these trends are not inevitable. Opposed by numerous efforts, from microbreweries to seed saving networks, it explores how opposition to this has encouraged even the most powerful firms to make small but positive changes. This revised edition has been updated to reflect recent developments in the food system, as well as the broad political economic forces that shape them. It also examines the rapidly changing technologies, such as Big Data and automation, which have the potential to reinforce, as well as to challenge, the power of the largest firms.

Book excerpt: Over the past 25 years, farmers have received a decreasing share of the consumer food dollar. Some analysts and farm interest groups are concerned that this decline can be attributed, in part, to increasing concentration in ag. Firms in highly concentrated markets may be able to exert market power by raising retail food prices while also depressing prices farmers receive for ag. commodities. This report provides info. on: (1) trends in concentration for various levels of the food marketing chain in major ag. sectors; (2) trends in retail food expenditures and prices; (3) trends in prices farmers received for major ag. commodities; and (4) the views of experts on the potential effects of concentration on ag. commodity and food prices. Book Synopsis Agricultural Contracting Update by : James M. MacDonald
Download or read book Agricultural Contracting Update written by James M. MacDonald and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marketing and production contracts covered 39% of the value of U.S. agricultural production in 2008, up from 36% in 2001, and a substantial increase over 28% in 1991 and 11% in 1969. However, aggregate contract use has stabilized in recent years and no longer suggests a strong trend. Contracts between farmers and their buyers are reached prior to harvest (or before the completion stage for livestock) and govern the terms under which products are transferred from the farm. Contracts are far more likely to be used on large farms than on small farms. Production contracts are used widely in livestock production, while marketing contracts are important to the production of many crops. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.
