Book excerpt: Concealing the state frees us from admitting the unpleasant truth-in today's world we are utterly dependent upon the state's increasingly frantic efforts to control risk. To this end, states have created systems of coercion and surveillance that are difficult to reconcile with our theories of political legitimacy. The dominant ideology of contemporary politics has become the concealment of the state's overwhelming power and role in daily life. We prefer the comfortable illusion that we are autonomous individuals pursuing our plans in a free market. If we hold fast to that idea, then our distance from policy makers and dwindling political influence seems less important. Nonetheless, this book draws upon the anarchist tradition and a wide range of accessible policy examples (ranging from military organization and environmental regulations to scientific investment and education) to reveal the active role of contemporary states behind this ideological screen. Lindsey argues that we need a new politics that focuses on exposing and challenging the contemporary state's hidden agency. Otherwise, how can we democratically control the state when it denies, from the outset, having the ability to meet our demands?

Book excerpt: The idea that a claim for international protection can be rejected on the basis that the claimant behave 'discreetly' in their country of origin has remained resilient in asylum claims based on sexual orientation, but also other grounds of claim. This is significant because requiring an asylum-seeker to forgo the reason for which they are persecuted questions the very rationale of refugee protection. This book represents the first principled examination of concealment in refugee law. Janna Wessels connects the different strands of the long-standing debate in both common and civil law jurisdictions and scholarship concerning the question of whether and under which circumstances a claimant must conceal to avoid persecution. In so doing, Wessels uncovers a fundamental tension at the core of the refugee concept. By using sexuality as a lens, this study breaks new ground regarding sexual orientation claims and wider issues surrounding the refugee definition.

This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract The transmission of digital TV signals to mobile receivers is often error-prone. As most TV broadcasting techniques provide only moderate error robustness, horizontal lines of consecutive image blocks are lost during decoding of the received video signals. In order to ensure high viewing experiences, these lost slices have to be filled by error concealment techniques. However, the reconstruction qualities of classical approaches which exploit spatial, temporal, or spatio-temporal signal correlations are not convincing yet. In the future, mobile TV receivers will support different broadcasting techniques in parallel. As a result, an erroneous high-resolution video signal and a correctly received low-resolution video signal, both representing the same TV service, will often be available. Focusing on the outlined scenario for multi-broadcast reception of digital TV signals, this thesis introduces the novel category of inter-sequence error concealment algorithms. The basic idea is to fill lost slices of the high-resolution video signal by the interpolated low-resolution video signal. Since the images of this reference signal are often cropped and delayed, robust spatio-temporal image alignment is crucial. By including a pixel-based or a feature-based alignment scheme, the proposed concealment algorithms provide excellent visual qualities and outstanding reconstruction qualities of up to 41 dB PSNR. Classical concealment techniques are outperformed by up to 15 dB PSNR. To further enhance the reconstruction quality, several extensions are introduced. First, the alignment robustness and the interpolation quality are increased. Subsequently, a classical temporal approach is incorporated as an alternative concealment mode to cope with low image qualities of the reference signal. Novel aspects include robust mode selection, enhanced motion estimation, and the reconstruction of the displaced frame differences from the reference signal. As a last extension, spatial refinement tackles blurring of concealed image blocks. Missing spectral components are recovered in a frequency selective way based on approximation and extrapolation principles. By combining all relevant extensions, the PSNR gain adds up to 20 dB with respect to classical concealment. Finally, inter-sequence error concealment is adapted to multi-broadcast reception of two erroneous high-resolution video signals. While spatial alignment can be omitted, classical concealment of blocks, being lost in both video signals, and drift compensation in predictively-coded frames are novel aspects. Again, high visual qualities are obtained and classical concealment is outperformed by up to 15 dB PSNR.

Book excerpt: Randomization, Masking, and Allocation Concealment is indispensable for any trial researcher who wants to use state of the art randomization methods, and also wants to be able to describe these methods correctly. Far too often the subtle nuances that distinguish proper randomization from flawed randomization are completely ignored in trial reports that state only that randomization was used, with no additional information. Experience has shown that in many cases, the type of randomization that was used was flawed. It is only a matter of time before medical journals and regulatory agencies come to realize that we can no longer rely on (or publish) flawed trials, and that flawed randomization in and of itself disqualifies a trial from being robust or high quality, even if that trial is of high quality otherwise. This book will help to clarify the role randomization plays in ensuring internal validity, and in drawing valid inferences from the data. The various chapters cover a variety of randomization methods, and are not limited to the most common (and most flawed) ones. Readers will come away with a profound understanding of what constitutes a valid randomization procedure, so that they can distinguish the valid from the flawed among not only existing methods but also methods yet to be developed.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes a significant contribution to political discourse analysis and to the study of silence, both from the point of view of discourse analysis as well as pragmatics, and it is also relevant for those interested in politics and media studies. It promotes the empirical study of silence by analysing metadiscourse about politicians’ silence and by systematically conceptualising the communicativeness of silence in the interplay between intention (to be silent), expectation (of speech) and relevance (of the unsaid). Three cases of sustained metadiscourse about silent politicians from Germany are analysed to exemplify this approach, based on media texts and protocols of parliamentary inquiries. Ideals of political transparency and communicative openness are identified as a basis for (disappointed) expectations of speech which trigger and determine metadiscourse about politicians’ silences. Finally, the book deals critically with the role of those who act as advocates of ‘the public’s’ demand to speak out.

Book excerpt: Camouflage and concealment are subjects which are often forgotten in the heat of battle, but they are so fundamental to survival on the battlefield that instruction has been emphasised ever since the British Army discarded the line and went over to khaki and skirmish lines. This pamphlet looks in great detail at the reasons for concealment, and what can be seen from the air. Concealment for the individual is covered as are the principles of concealment for small units. Artificial aids to concealment are also examined, as well as natural materials, and their use is shown in the accompanying photographs. The pamphlet also shows, by “right “and “wrong” illustrations, how to conceal infantry and their weapons, wheeled vehicles, armoured fighting vehicles, artillery and headquarters. The photographs in the publication are sourced from both training examples and actual war pictures, and show how important good camouflage is.

Book excerpt: This Delomelanicon, which means "Book of Summoning the Darkness" or "Invocation of Darkness" is a book of concealment about embracing the darkness hidden within the subconscious in order to have unconditionally self-acceptance. The verses in this book use Greek and Hebrew mythology as allegories about the chthonic or subconscious primal survival instincts of the mind. It is Kabbalistic as it focuses on the Dark Tree which is the roots of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, usually called by the Right-Hand Path of magic as the Qlippoth or Tree of Death. This is the opposite of the Biblical Book of Revelations which is about ascending from earth to heaven or Crown of Life which is the Crown of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, instead, this Book of Concealment is about descending from earth to hell, which is Kingdom on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life or root chakra in the chakras system in order to understand our animal instincts.

Book excerpt: A concealment of any kind by our government to keep secrets of their criminal activities must not be tolerated especially when the government, in this case the municipality of the City of Atlanta trespasses on private properties and illegally dumps for years their hazardous waste. If they will do this, how can we the public, trust them with our drinking water?? 100% transparency is required! I've inscribed these pages after a number of alarming experiences dating back to the mid-1960s through present day. Imagine, all three levels of government have been and are allowing the ongoing concealment of a deeply massive hazardous illegal dumpsite. This site created by a dominant municipality, whose authoritative power extends throughout the entire Southeastern section of the USA. From 1960s through 2000, this city's illegal trespassed entirely upon private properties of low-income blacks who lived adjacent the notorious all-black Perry Homes Housing Project. This city disposed more than three hundred thousand cubic yards of hazardous waste there. To make matters worse, the city zealously concealed and deceived every effort to expose their illegal activities for more than two decades to present day. My efforts and litigation's have been relentlessly thwarted for years, due to the city's predominant goal to obtain the last parcel of land they disposed waste thereon, which unfortunately I still own. The City of Atlanta's law department and Public Works department deceptive method of condemning only my four properties has left me no other choice but to write this book. Public safety and health concerns have yet to be considered by any government, concerning this illegal dumpsite, consistently releases contamination into the air and directly into state and national waterways. My eight years of investigations reveal extensive ongoing damage to the public and environment. The publication of these facts will give insight into the evidence that our government doesn't want revealed. Ultimately, there is no such law on the books that address a rogue government agency; therefore, we as citizens in the USA, are left helpless to concealment consequences of a never-ending contamination source affecting a minimum of three states and the Gulf of Mexico. This book aspired me to create the movement called Our Public Trust (OurPublictrust.com). We must unite globally to speak up and DEMAND TRANSPARENCY WHEN IT COMES TO OUR PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY! May God protect us!

Book excerpt: While concealment has been a vital requirement for hunting, fighting and protection since earliest days, the use of camouflage as deception purposes came of age in the First World War. The growing use of aircraft was a factor no doubt as the author of this fascinating study concludes. The inventiveness and improvisation required suited the British temperament well. Given that those individuals who particularly excel at creativity are often artists, scientist and engineers with a fine disregard for orthodox military practice there are plenty of examples of clashes with more conventional military thinkers and bureaucracy. The levels of ingenuity achieved in hiding huge installations, airfields and ships are astounding. Lakes were hidden and river courses concealed. 'Active' camouflage designed to deceive the enemy as to strengths and directions of attack was accepted as a vital part of offensive planning for example at El Alamein and in the run-up to D Day, Guy Hartcup's Camouflage is not only instructive reading for military practitioners intent on developing their skills but a most interesting and entertaining read for a much wider audience. The use of photographs provides graphic examples of attempts at concealment and deception over the years in many different wars and theaters.

Book excerpt: During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, great new trends of Jewish thought emerged whose widely varied representatives--Kabbalists, philosophers, and astrologers--each claimed that their particular understanding revealed the actual secret of the Torah. They presented their own readings in a coded fashion that has come to be regarded by many as the very essence of esotericism. Concealment and Revelation takes us on a fascinating journey to the depths of the esoteric imagination. Carefully tracing the rise of esotericism and its function in medieval Jewish thought, Moshe Halbertal's richly detailed historical and cultural analysis gradually builds conceptual-philosophical force to culminate in a masterful phenomenological taxonomy of esotericism and its paradoxes. Among the questions addressed: What are the internal justifications that esoteric traditions provide for their own existence, especially in the Jewish world, in which the spread of knowledge was of great importance? How do esoteric teachings coexist with the revealed tradition, and what is the relationship between the various esoteric teachings that compete with that revealed tradition? Halbertal concludes that, through the medium of the concealed, Jewish thinkers integrated into the heart of the Jewish tradition diverse cultural influences such as Aristotelianism, Neoplatonism, and Hermeticisims. And the creation of an added concealed layer, unregulated and open-ended, became the source of the most daring and radical interpretations of the tradition.

Book excerpt: Esther Amini grew up in Queens, New York, during the free-wheeling 1960s. She also grew up in a Persian-Jewish household, the American- born daughter of parents who had fled Mashhad, Iran. In CONCEALED she tells the story of being caught between these two worlds: the dutiful daughter of tradition-bound parents who hungers for more self-determination than tradition allows. Exploring the roots of her father's deep silences and explosive temper, her mother's flamboyance and flights from home, and her own sense of indebtedness to her two Iranian-born brothers, Amini uncovers the story of her parents' early years in Mashhad, Iran's holiest Muslim city; the little known history and persecution of Mashhad's underground Jews; the incident that steeled her mother's resolve to leave; and her parents' arduous journey to the United States, where they found themselves facing a new threat to their traditions: the threat of freedom. Determined to protect his only daughter from corruption, Amini's father prohibits talk, books, higher education, and tries to push her into an early Persian marriage. Can she resist? Should she? Focused intently on what she stands to gain, Amini eventually comes to see what she also stands to lose: a family and community bound together by food, celebrations, sibling escapades, and unexpected acts of devotion by parents to whom she feels invisible. In this poignant, funny, entertaining and uplifting memoir, Amini documents with keen eye, quick wit, and warm heart, how family members build, buoy, wound, and save one another across generations; how lives are shaped by the demands and burdens of loyalty and legacy; and how she rose to the challenge of deciding what to keep and what to discard.

Reflecting the diversity of his many philosophical preoccupations, this volume is a collection of his most recent critical essays and reviews. The first section, Public and Private, focuses on the notion of privacy in the context of social and political issues, such as the impeachment of President Clinton. The second section, Right and Wrong, discusses moral, political and legal theory, and includes pieces on John Rawls, G.A. Cohen, and T.M. Scanlon, among others. The final section, Mind and Reality, features discussions of Richard Rorty, Donald Davidson, and the Sokal hoax, and closes with a substantial new essay on the mind-body problem. Written with characteristic rigor, these pieces reveal the intellectual passion underlying the incisive analysis for which Nagel is known.

Book excerpt: Although the rate of gun ownership in U.S. households has declined from an estimated 50 percent in 1970 to approximately 32 percent today, Americans' propensity for carrying concealed firearms has risen sharply in recent years. Today, more than 11 million Americans hold concealed handgun licenses, an increase from 4.5 million in 2007. Yet, despite increasing numbers of firearms and expanding opportunities for gun owners to carry concealed firearms in public places, we know little about the reasons for obtaining a concealed carry permit or what a publicly armed citizenry means for society. Angela Stroud draws on in-depth interviews with permit holders and on field observations at licensing courses to understand how social and cultural factors shape the practice of obtaining a permit to carry a concealed firearm. Stroud's subjects usually first insist that a gun is simply a tool for protection, but she shows how much more the license represents: possessing a concealed firearm is a practice shaped by race, class, gender, and cultural definitions that separate "good guys" from those who represent threats. Stroud's work goes beyond the existing literature on guns in American culture, most of which concentrates on the effects of the gun lobby on public policy and perception. Focusing on how respondents view the world around them, this book demonstrates that the value gun owners place on their firearms is an expression of their sense of self and how they see their social environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elusive disposition of John's language has been noted by biblical scholars throughout the history of New Testament studies. The Fourth Gospel is seen as so simple to grasp and yet often pointing beyond itself and beckoning the reader to read deeper. Various socio-linguistic studies have explained this feature as the reflection of the sectarian tendencies in the Johannine Christianity. In his study Saeed Hamid-Khani questions these approaches as inadequate. In turn, he examines John's language within an exegetical and theological framework. He argues that the Sitz im Leben of Johannine language was an environment in which the Hebrew Scriptures were the dominant conceptual force for both the Jews and the Christians. In this context he argues that the essential function of John's enigmatic language is wedded to the Evangelist's purpose in writing the Gospel: namely a steadfast focus upon setting forth that Jesus is the Christ according to the witness of Israel's Scriptures. It is here in these echoes and thematic allusions to the Scriptures that we find the answer to the function and significance of John's unique language: i.e., Jesus is the Messiah, the Saviour of the world, and he is the visible image of the invisible God, the embodiment of the self-revelation of God according to the Scriptures. However, these truths are concealed from the undiscerning and are only revealed by the spirit of God to those who are born of God.
