There were some lectures I wanted to attend in each university, but I particularly wanted to perfect my French and German, Since the diplomatic service, even if one is only a secretary of legation, de mands fluency in these tongues. All the more reason, one would think, for choosing Berlin, Since the Hanoverian German, universal in Ber lin, is conceded to be the purest and the Saxon the most execrable of Germany 's many dialects. But I have almost come to think fate manages these things for us. Certainly life would have lost its crowning glory for me if I had not gone to Leipzig to study in October, 1913. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captains and Comrades in the Faith, Sermons Historical and Biographical It will he obvious that the sermons here collected have neither a consecutive character nor a unity of immediate purpose. Preached for the most part in connection with anniversaries or memorials, the purpose of each was to call attention to some lesson or example belonging to the particular occasion, whether personal, ecclesiastical, or national. Some of the thoughts are necessarily recurrent, and the occasions lay widely apart both in time and place - facts which will explain and perhaps excuse the repetition here and there of the same moral or illustration. Though, from the nature of the case, the book offers no solid or original contribution to theological thought, it may perhaps serve the humbler purpose of recalling wholesome and stimulating memories which attach to special days or special gatherings. If any of us should thus be helped, at an anxious time in the story of Church and Realm, to thank God and to take courage, the hope which has led to the publication of the volume will have been satisfied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comrades in Play: Leisure Time Activites Which the Young Men and Young Women of America Can Enjoy Together The new conception of comradeship which has come out of the war, and the necessity for creating social groups equipped to carry on the new social spirit through which the lessons learned during the war are to be conserved, have made it desirable to point out the fundamental principles involved in formulating a program of leisure-time activities which young men and young women can enjoy together. For the reason that organization of people and a program of activities are means to a conception of comradeship which will make for citizenship of the highest type, it is the purpose of this booklet to indicate from among the activities which proved so valuable in the entertainment of soldiers, those which should be continued in a peace-time program, and to discover additional activities which may be utilized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative of Military Service I send out this book as my contribution toward the history of our heroic age. It may awaken proud recel lections in the breast of an old comrade; it may make a son's heart exalt at the sight of his father's name; above all, it may help to reveal, to establish, and to confirm the truth, which it is the part of every one to tell, and from which neither the brave men whom I led, nor their leader, have as soldiers anything to fear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To His Comrades in Arms, Volunteers and Regulars, of the Great Civil War: This Sincerely and Affectionately Dedicated Before deciding to write up our local biography and personal Memoirs, we had fully intended to write the lives and public services of the war-governors. But in glancing over the Muncy (penn) Luminary, we were surprised, and much regret to state, that we were informed by that paper, that only three surviving war-governors were yet living, namely, Samuel J Crawford of Topeka, Kansas, Gen. We received letters from Governors Crawford and Holbrook of Brattleboro, Vermont, both of whom consented to the noble and patriotic. Project. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General John A. Wickham, commander of the famous 101st Airborne Division in the 1970s and subsequently Army Chief of Staff, once visited Antietam battlefield. Gazing at Bloody Lane where, in 1862, several Union assaults were brutally repulsed before they finally broke through, he marveled, "You couldn't get American soldiers today to make an attack like that." Why did those men risk certain death, over and over again, through countless bloody battles and four long, awful years ? Why did the conventional wisdom -- that soldiers become increasingly cynical and disillusioned as war progresses -- not hold true in the Civil War? It is to this question--why did they fight--that James McPherson, America's preeminent Civil War historian, now turns his attention. He shows that, contrary to what many scholars believe, the soldiers of the Civil War remained powerfully convinced of the ideals for which they fought throughout the conflict. Motivated by duty and honor, and often by religious faith, these men wrote frequently of their firm belief in the cause for which they fought: the principles of liberty, freedom, justice, and patriotism. Soldiers on both sides harkened back to the Founding Fathers, and the ideals of the American Revolution. They fought to defend their country, either the Union--"the best Government ever made"--or the Confederate states, where their very homes and families were under siege. And they fought to defend their honor and manhood. "I should not lik to go home with the name of a couhard," one Massachusetts private wrote, and another private from Ohio said, "My wife would sooner hear of my death than my disgrace." Even after three years of bloody battles, more than half of the Union soldiers reenlisted voluntarily. "While duty calls me here and my country demands my services I should be willing to make the sacrifice," one man wrote to his protesting parents. And another soldier said simply, "I still love my country." McPherson draws on more than 25,000 letters and nearly 250 private diaries from men on both sides. Civil War soldiers were among the most literate soldiers in history, and most of them wrote home frequently, as it was the only way for them to keep in touch with homes that many of them had left for the first time in their lives. Significantly, their letters were also uncensored by military authorities, and are uniquely frank in their criticism and detailed in their reports of marches and battles, relations between officers and men, political debates, and morale. For Cause and Comrades lets these soldiers tell their own stories in their own words to create an account that is both deeply moving and far truer than most books on war. Battle Cry of Freedom, McPherson's Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the Civil War, was a national bestseller that Hugh Brogan, in The New York Times, called "history writing of the highest order." For Cause and Comrades deserves similar accolades, as McPherson's masterful prose and the soldiers' own words combine to create both an important book on an often-overlooked aspect of our bloody Civil War, and a powerfully moving account of the men who fought it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One cold Moscow night, Comrade Tulayev, a high government official, is shot dead on the street, and the search for the killer begins. In this panoramic vision of the Soviet Great Terror, the investigation leads all over the world, netting a whole series of suspects whose only connection is their innocence—at least of the crime of which they stand accused. But The Case of Comrade Tulayev, unquestionably the finest work of fiction ever written about the Stalinist purges, is not just a story of a totalitarian state. Marked by the deep humanity and generous spirit of its author, the legendary anarchist and exile Victor Serge, it is also a classic twentieth-century tale of risk, adventure, and unexpected nobility to set beside Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls and André Malraux's Man's Fate.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bastiles of the Confederacy In adding this modest contribution to the annals of the Civil War, the writer has been actuated by motives sufficiently stated in the introductory pages, and not with the intention, much less the wish, to cast a shade of disparagement upon the more voluminous narratives of such writers as John McElroy, Warren Lee, Goss, Ambrose Spencer, Albert D. Richardson, Junius Henri Browne, Willard, Glazier and others, whose pens have pictured with graphic fidelity and eloquence the tragic and pathetic scenes which they witnessed while sharing captivity with him in the military prisons of the South. If a reason is required besides those given in the text for this publication at this time, it seems to be supplied by the posthumous paper of Jefferson Davis on "Andersonville," begun in Belford's Magazine for the present month (January, 1890). The writer has at irregular intervals since the war contributed to the newspapers of Philadelphia, New York and other cities a large number of sketches and reminiscences of his twenty months' experiences and observations in six of the chief war prisons of the South.
