Book excerpt: This very provocative book takes the reader on a “think-out-of-the-box” journey through the development of a treatment regimen for multiple myeloma called “dtZ”. It is a firsthand account of how more than 50 patients with myeloma were given a non-toxic, precisely-targeted, anti-cancer treatment that was specifically adapted to their individual cancers. These Individualized Anti-Cancer Targeted Therapies (smart bombs) have produced amongst the best responses as well as survival rates for myeloma. Accordingly, the author argues that some patients might even have been “cured” of their cancers. The concepts and logic behind “dtZ” are carefully presented in simple language so that both doctors and patients can easily understand them. Numerous tables and figures are provided, together with clear and simple explanations. This book is a valuable resource for all patients with myeloma who want to get the most out of their treatment by individualizing treatment to suit their needs, particularly for patients who have just been diagnosed with myeloma and who are taking that very important first step in their treatment. It is also a useful guide for doctors, nurses and researchers who treat and/or study myeloma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late twentieth century saw charities grow from timid service deliverers into major providers with campaigning teeth. What caused this? How did they gain confidence and strength? In this fascinating history, examined through the eyes of RNIB from 1970 to 2010, Ian Bruce examines the internal drivers and the external socio-political environment that allowed and encouraged this explosion. Bruce's experience of leading a charity at the forefront of this change, and his participation in the wider charity sector for fifty years as both activist and academic, gives him an unsurpassed understanding of what happened and why. His first-hand knowledge will speak to charity workers as well as academics, covering themes such as the rise of beneficiary power against patronising providers; the change from welfare to rights; the shift from the medical to the social model of disability; and the adoption of social welfare and business professionalisms such as Strategic Planning and Charity Marketing. Today's charities have much to learn from the successes and mistakes of this dynamic period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Computer Assisted Learning contains selected proceedings from the CAL Symposium on Computer Assisted Learning held at the University of Nottingham in the UK in 1985. This book reviews advances in computer-assisted learning in the areas of curriculum development, visually handicapped and disabled students, project work in schools, television, viewdata and video applications, database applications, and engineering education and training. This monograph has 35 chapters and opens with a discussion on the computing aspects of interactive video, focusing on the design and production of the software used to control the videodisc developed by the Open University in the UK. The next chapter illustrates a variety of case studies whereby local viewdata has been exploited by both teachers and their pupils in different parts of Europe. Attention then turns to the use of computer-assisted communication in the education of the visually impaired; the use of microcomputers in teaching electronics; and theoretical considerations in selecting software for language arts. This text will be of interest to educators and policymakers who want to implement computer technology in the classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Biomedical Engineering, Volume 4, is a collection of papers that deals with gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy and the analysis of minute samples, as well as the role of the government in regulating the production, usage, safety, and efficacy of medical devices. One paper reviews the use of mass spectrometry and computer technology in relation to gas-phase analytical methods based on gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer instruments and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer-computer analytical systems. Many health practitioners, government and private health agencies, the legal profession, and insurance companies express concern over the safety, efficacy, and quality of medical devices. One paper notes the automation process occurring in the clinical laboratory—that its success depends on the competence of its professional staff and its rate of substitution of mechanized equipment for manual labor. Other papers discuss the technology employed in monitoring the traumatized patient, and also the use of technology such as sensory substitution for human rehabilitation. The collection can prove valuable to bio-chemists, micro-biologists, developmental biologists, and scientists involved in physical rehabilitation and biomaterials research.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the papers presented at the Workshop on "Rehabilitation of the Visually Impaired" held in Flo rence at the Institute for the Research on Electromagnetic Waves of the Italian Research Council on April 4-6, 1984. The Workshop, sponsored by the Committee for Medical and Public Health Research of the Commission of the European Communities, was meant to exchange ideas about the need, importance and feasibility of a European cooperation in the field of visual impairment and to identify promising research areas, where current national activities could take advantage of such a collaboration in order to increase their efficiency. In particular, it dealt with the develop ment and use of technical aids (mainly based on computers and signal processing techniques) and with the elaboration, evaluation and standardization of new methods and tests. The attendance was multidisciplinary, including researchers from the fields of technology, medicine and psychology and representatives from organizations involved in the rehabi litation of the visually impaired. Five technical sessions were organized, dealing with the following topics: automatic production of Braille and systems for paperless Braille, aids for reading and for the interaction with coded informa tion sources, low vision aids, transduction of visual infor mation into a tactile representation, mobility aids. Three different application sectors were mainly considered: education and culture, vocational training, mobility. A final session was devoted to a discussion in working groups. The results are briefly outlined in the following concise report of the Workshop.
