Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of psychological, social and demographic variables on student achievement and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret student achievement literature and suggests new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the authors compile various studies examining the relationship between student achievement and 21 psychological, social and demographic variables separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

Book excerpt: Whether it is earning a GED, a particular skill, or technical topic for a career, taking classes of interest, or even returning to begin a degree program or completing it, adult learning encompasses those beyond the traditional university age seeking out education. This type of education could be considered non-traditional as it goes beyond the typical educational path and develops learners that are self-initiated and focused on personal development in the form of gaining some sort of education. Essentially, it is a voluntary choice of learning throughout life for personal and professional development. While there is often a large focus towards K-12 and higher education, it is important that research also focuses on the developing trends, technologies, and techniques for providing adult education along with understanding lifelong learners’ choices, developments, and needs. The Research Anthology on Adult Education and the Development of Lifelong Learners focuses specifically on adult education and the best practices, services, and educational environments and methods for both the teaching and learning of adults. This spans further into the understanding of what it means to be a lifelong learner and how to develop adults who want to voluntarily contribute to their own development by enhancing their education level or knowledge of certain topics. This book is essential for teachers and professors, course instructors, business professionals, school administrators, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the latest advancements in adult education and lifelong learning.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the current state of the art in research on the education and learning of adults, and how such research has been transformed through contemporary policy and research practices. Gathering contributions from leading experts in the field, the book draws on previous research, as well as new findings in order to provide a map of this research field and its contemporary history. The chapters address a number of questions, including: What constitutes this research field? What theories and methodologies dominate within the field? What “invisible colleges” are active in shaping this academic field, in marking out its contours and in transforming its contemporary battle zones? Who is publishing in the field and who is deemed worth citing? What is the relationship between the shift in state policy on adult education and the research that is conducted on the education and learning of adults? How has the research field changed over time in various western countries? What do these meta-reflections of the field tell us about possible future research endeavours? Rather than speaking from within the field, this is a book about the research field. The diversity of the chapters provide a fascinating resource for anyone interested in research on the education and learning of adults.

Book excerpt: Online learning has become more and more common globally, whether for comfort, adapting to work hours or just having the freedom to study from anywhere. And now under the coronavirus pandemic, as people are having to stay at home, it has become more important than ever. Although the popularity of wireless network and portable smart device makes it possible for people to acquire and learn knowledge anytime and anywhere, it does not necessarily mean an increased learning performance. Relevant research in cognitive science has revealed possible limitations in online learning. For example, the knowledge acquired through online learning tends to be fragmented and lacks guidance for integrated thinking among different subjects, which makes it difficult for learners to form a systematic knowledge structure. Learners may experience cognitive overload, metacognitive illusion and low learning efficiency in self-regulated learning. It follows that, in the post COVID-19 era, online learning puts forward new requirements and challenges to the contemporary students, not only to their learning strategies but positive character traits in learning. Most of the current learning theories were developed in the early 20th century and may not fit in well with the current situation, then possibly leading to inefficient learning and increased learning burden. Therefore, it is necessary and important to reexplore the influencing factors and mechanisms that affect the learning efficiency of students at all levels nowadays, based on which we could construct a theoretical model of efficient learning model.

Book excerpt: This quasi-experimental study investigated the impact of completion of an introduction to computers course on postsecondary students' confidence of computer use and basic computer literacy. The study also examined if there was a relationship between computer use confidence and computer literacy scores prior to taking the introduction to computers course and certain student characteristics, if the gain in computer use confidence ratings and literacy scores at the end of the introduction to computers course was different for comparable students not enrolled in the course, and the relationships between student computer use confidence and student computer literacy scores. The following conclusions were drawn from this study: (a) The number of prior computer classes taken and hours spent using the computer for educational purposes have a positive relationship to pretest computer literacy scores. The number of prior computer classes taken, hours spent using the computer for educational purposes, and hours spent using the computer for e-mail have a positive relationship to pretest computer use confidence scores. (b) Completion of an introduction to computers course results in a significant increase in computer use confidence ratings. (c) Completion of an introduction to computers course results in a significant increase in computer literacy scores. (d) Students completing an introduction to computers course have higher gains in both computer use confidence ratings and computer literacy than students not completing an introduction to computers course. (e) There is a positive relationship between computer use confidence ratings and computer literacy scores. Students with higher computer literacy scores will also have higher computer use confidence ratings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?This study examined the performance of adult learners in an upgrading situation. It was hypothesised that students’ upgrading performance using a computer-based learning system would not be significantly difference, regardless of their individual learning styles. All students had their learning style preference evaluated. All learners were to learn from a computer-based high school upgrading courseware package. The project examined the performance of a number of forestry workers. The adult students learned from a set series of assigned courses in math and English from a computer-based software program and staff monitored progress using the internal student tracking system. Their individual performances were compared using their learning styles as an independent variable. Three learning styles were examined; Auditory, Visual and Multi-Sensory. The subjects’ learning styles were determined. Other independent variables, including sex, graduation status, and current academic ability level, were compared using one-way ANOVA statistical tests. Graduation status was either graduated from high school, or non-graduate. Current academic ability level was tested and raw scores were converted to primary, elementary, or secondary school levels of academic ability. No significant differences in performance were observed among the independent or dependent variables as a function of the individuals’ different learning styles. This result supported the conclusion that adult students with a variety of learning styles may be assigned to a computer-based learning system and that they each could perform similarly, regardless of their individual learning style. Computer-assisted learning may be useful as a tool to assist adult learners with various learning styles to complete their basic high school education.?--Page ii.
