Much of this enthusiasm came from the experience of devel{)ping Critical Care Consultant, a large BASIC program for critical care applications (St. Louis, C. V. Mosby, 1985). Working with clinicians showed me that many were interested in learning about clinical applications of computers (and even programming in small doses) but were faced with a paucity of clinical application software. Few had the time or training to develop any such software on their own. After a search through the existing medical literature unearthed relatively little in the way of usable programs, I decided that a series of small clinical applications programs would be of use to the medical community. At the onset a number of strategic decisions were made: (1) the programs would be written in BASIC, in view of its universal popularity, (2) the units used for clinical laboratory tests would be those in common use in the United States, (3) the programs would be simple and easily understood and employ no exotic tricks that were not easily transported across computers, (4) references to the literature would be provided to allow the clinician to critically assess the algorithm or method used himself or to follow up on subsequent criticisms that may have been published, and (5) the programs would demonstrate reasonable standards of software engineering in terms of clarity, trans portability, documentation, and ease of modification.

Book excerpt: This book will highlight all aspects of laboratory informatics, with a focus on information management and the corresponding hardware and technical processes involved. In addition to a comprehensive introduction on laboratory informatics, the book emphasizes the importance of information and resource management as opposed to simply covering the role of computers that support the information system. As a Professor of Pathology and the Director of Laboratory Information Services at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Dr. Cowan has witnessed the shift in focus in the laboratory from the information generation to information management, and increasing resource limitations demand a higher level of management precision than can be gained from manual methods. The American Board of Pathology now requires an increasing sophistication in information management from candidates for certification. Thus, this book is intended for pathologists and residents in pathology, clinical laboratory scientists, and laboratory and information managers. Following the broad-based introduction on laboratory informatics, the book's topics include: computer basics; development and validation of the laboratory information system; computer networks; security and confidentiality on computer systems and networks; total cost of ownership; essential software; interfaces; process modeling; artificial intelligence and expert systems; bar coding in the laboratory; image analysis and computer-assisted quantitation; and telepathology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1 offers an overview of the basic computer technology. Each succeeding chapter, describes the problems in medicine, followed by a review in chronological sequence of why and how computers were applied to try to meet these problems. Only the technical aspects of computer hardware, software, and communications are discussed as they are necessary to explain how the technology was applied. This approach generally led to defining the objectives for applications of medical informatics. At the end of each chapter, the author summarizes his personal views and interpretations of the chapter contents. Although the concurrent evolution of medical informatics in Canada, Europe, and Japan certainly influenced workers in the United States, the scope of this historical review is limited to the development of medical informatics within the United States. Furthermore, this review is limited to electronic digital computers; it excludes mechanical, analog, and hybrid computers.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of invited contributions, each reflec ting an area of medicine in which computing techniques have been successfully applied; but why the title? From a control system point of view the aim of clinical medicine is to recognise the deviation of a patient from the space of normality, and to propel and steer the patient along a trajectory back to that space. Acquiring and main taining the knowledge and skills of this process is the function of medicine. The first chapter expands on this view. Subsequent chapters written by experts in their respective areas cover a fair range of application. All give considerable insight as to the ways in which the control system approach, facilitated by computational tools, can be of value when applied to clinical problems. The idea for this book arose naturally out of a symposium held at the University of Sussex, Brighton, England, on "Control System Concepts and Approaches in Clinical Medicine" in April, 1982, spon sored by the Institute of Measurement and Control and co-sponsored by the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Royal Society of Medicine. It is not, however, a "proceedings" of this meeting but rather a collection of essays that reflect developing areas in which many have particular interest. We think the volume is timely and hope that the work described will be an encouragement for others.

Book excerpt: Technological advances have revolutionized the way we manage information in our daily workflow. The medical field has especially benefitted from these advancements, improving patient treatment, health data storage, and the management of laboratory samples and results. Laboratory Management Information Systems: Current Requirements and Future Perspectives responds to the issue of administering appropriate regulations in a medical laboratory environment in the era of telemedicine, electronic health records, and other e-health services. Exploring concepts such as the implementation of ISO 15189:2012 policies and the effects of e-health application, this book is an integral reference source for researchers, academicians, students of health care programs, health professionals, and laboratory personnel.

Book excerpt: Today, laboratories use computers to manage test requests and specimen collection, control instruments, collect data from instruments, translate that data into meaningful results, collate all analyses on an individual patient, and generate reports for physician information and inclusion in patients medical records. Because computers are part of every laboratory and because medical informatics (including clinical laboratory data) is essential to health care delivery, clinical laboratory personnel must have a basic knowledge of computers and computer communication technology. Individuals who understand how a computer operates will use computers more effectively and, when faced with decision making about computers, will not be at the mercy of those who do know. Similar to the automobile, the more you know about how it operates, the more informed decisions you can make in purchases, repairs, and upgrades. This chapter will present general concepts of computer hardware, software, and their usage in the clinical laboratory.

Book excerpt: The practice of modern medicine requires sophisticated information technologies with which to manage patient information, plan diagnostic procedures, interpret laboratory results, and conduct research. Designed for a broad audience, this book fills the need for a high quality reference in computers and medicine, first explaining basic concepts, then illustrating them with specific systems and technologies. Medical Informatics provides both a conceptual framework and a practical inspiration for this swiftly emerging scientific discipline. The second edition covers system design and engineering, ethics of health informatics, system evaluation and technology assessment, public health and consumer use of health information, and healthcare financing.
