Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, rapid digitalization has changed many elements of society, and education is no exception. The tradition of teacher-centered education has been long-held in education and is still extremely well established. Due to the access of technology for knowledge and education, however, the teacher’s function in many classrooms has been to advise and guide as students take greater responsibility for their own learning using technology to collect information. Schools and universities across the world are beginning to redesign their learning spaces to enable this new model of education, foster more interaction and small group work, and use technology as an enabler of knowledge. Technology Training for Educators From Past to Present addresses the issues facing our education systems today and the role of technology and innovation in the global transformation of education. This book focuses on the fundamental need for educators at all levels to become knowledgeable with the technological teaching and learning tools at their disposal in order to best support student learning. Covering topics such as inclusion promotion in education, technology professional development, and online learning environments, this premier reference source is a valuable resource for educational administration and faculty, educators of K-12 and higher education, educational software developers, IT consultants, pre-service teachers, libraries, teaching colleges, researchers, and academicians.

Globalization and the IT revolution provide a new context to the problems faced by contemporary India. But will globalization ensure rapid economic growth and development in the face of low literacy, rising population, and the gradual withdrawal of the State from social commitments? Will imitation westernization, and the consumerism that comes with it, further a just society? What are the strains that democracy will be subjected to in the empowerment struggle by marginalized groups, and the growing social and economic disparities that are often accompanied by violence and terrorism? How will India's multiculturalism be affected by the upsurge of various identities and of exclusionist nationalism? Will the family as an institution be transformed to enhance gender justice? Will new technology ensure the autonomy of the media? Can the mauling of the Indian landscape be halted? before India in the early decades of this millennium.

Book excerpt: This book presents some of the results from the second stage of lEA's study of Computers in Education (CompEd). lEA, the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, conducts international comparative studies focussing on educational achievement, practices, and policies in various countries and education systems around the world. It has a Secretariat located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. lEA studies have reported on a wide range of topics, each contributing to a deeper understanding of educational processes. The CompEd study is a project that sheds light on the way computers have been introduced in education and on how they are being used across the world today. The study proceeded in two stages with data collected for stage 1 in 1989 and for stage 2 in 1992. Results from both stages have been published in a variety of publications. This book reports about a special part of the study. Student achievement and school processes come into being in the context of the structure and the policies of national (or regional) education systems. The variety found in the CompEd results led us to ask how much might be explained by differences in these national or regional contexts. That is the reason the CompEd study took the initiative to invite the countries participating in the study, as well as some other countries that have had interesting developments in the domain of educational computers, to write a chapter describing their policies and practices regarding computers in education.
