Book excerpt: This report describes the work conducted on a program to design, fabricate and evaluate a prototype Computer Automated Ultrasonic Inspection System for inspecting complex aircraft forgings. This report documents the modification required to off-the-shelf ultrasonic equipment to provide all the ultrasonic flaw data for the computer and provide computer control of receiver gain and flaw-gate width. Also the design and fabrication of a multiple flaw gate system is described and evaluated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work includes the preliminary design of the overall system operation shown by block diagrams of the subsystem functions and operations and timing diagrams for the three modes of ultrasonic inspection: reflection, transmission, and Delta-Scan. Progress to date includes the completion of the design of the X-Y scanner, the purchase of a 4 x 6 x 3-ft tank, and the purchase of the mechanical components, electromechanical controls, and displays necessary for the fabrication of an X-Y scanner capable of operating in the manual or computer controlled mode. The design for the gimbal control is essentially complete with some of the components already in fabrication. A Convair-owned Automation Model UM 771 reflectoscope has been modified to accept programmable gain control from the computer. The electronic circuitries for the gating and computer interfacing have been designed and several have been fabricated. (Modified author abstract)

Book excerpt: Standard ultrasonic inspection techniques used in industry today can involve tedious manual or semiautomated operations that make them incompatible with high-rate industrial production inspection requirements. But with advanced indigital computer technology and the rapid integration of this technology into both laboratory and production environments, the development of computer-aided ultrasonic inspection has become a reality. By reducing inspection costs through reduced inspection time, decreased inspector interaction, as well as providing more efficient inspection record storage and retrieval, these automated systems are proving their value and indispensability in the manufacturing environment. Computer-automated ultrasonic inspection has the potential to increase inspection reliability, provide permanent inspection records which can be used to track part integrity during the life of the aircraft, and can establish a structured data base for statistical analysis of inspection results.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work conducted on a program to optimize the hardware and software of a computer automated ultrasonic inspection system which was developed under a previous Air Force Contract F33615-72-C-1828. The hardware modifications included improvements of the scan drive mechanism to increase inspection speed and development of improved ultrasonic circuitry to perform zone scanning inspections. Software developments included: (1) implementation of the zone scanning inspection method, (2) programs for signal processing to enhance random flaw detection, and (3) development of a Computer Aided Design Data Control (CADDC) method to interface the inspection system with data generated by Computer Aided Design (CAD) approach to component design.

Book excerpt: Ultrasonic inspection, one of the newest methods of nondestructive testing, has grown in a relatively short time from a laboratory phenomenon to one of our most valuable means of detecting subsurface discontinuities. Ultrasonic flaw detection, basically speaking, employs a high-frequency sound wave which, when transmitted into a piece of material, follows a linear path and is reflected back when it reaches the end face of the material or an internal discontinuity. In plate, bar, and extrusion, the subsurface defects lie parallel to the surface, almost without exception, and these materials readily adapt themselves to high-speed scanning and the use of automation and automatic scanning equipment.

Book Synopsis Computer Techniques for Ultrasonic Inspection by : James M. Smith
Download or read book Computer Techniques for Ultrasonic Inspection written by James M. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper will describe two prototype ultrasonic inspection systems developed in-house at the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center (AMMRC). Both systems incorporate computers for data acquisition and analysis purposes. The first inspection instrument uses a 64-element transducer array and is capable of inspecting artillery shell rotating bands for unbonds at high inspection rates (less than 10 seconds per shell). The second instrument is designed to measure the nonmetallic inclusion content in steel billets. Steel 'cleanliness' measurements are important when high quality steel is required for critical gears and bearings in aircraft engines. (Author).
