Extensive reference to computational techniques is made throughout and downloadable MATLAB files accompany the book to support your own hydrostatic and stability calculations. The book also includes tables of notations and technical terms, and indexes in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. - Definitions, formulations, and methods are provided throughout to facilitate novices. - Rigorous mathematical proofs of the most important theorems are provided. - Examples based on data from real ships are used throughout the book to explain concepts and procedures.
Book Synopsis The Mathematics of Surfaces IX by : Roberto Cipolla
Download or read book The Mathematics of Surfaces IX written by Roberto Cipolla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings collect the papers accepted for presentation at the bien nial IMA Conference on the Mathematics of Surfaces, held in the University of Cambridge, 4-7 September 2000. While there are many international con ferences in this fruitful borderland of mathematics, computer graphics and engineering, this is the oldest, the most frequent and the only one to concen trate on surfaces. Contributors to this volume come from twelve different countries in Eu rope, North America and Asia. Their contributions reflect the wide diversity of present-day applications which include modelling parts of the human body for medical purposes as well as the production of cars, aircraft and engineer ing components. Some applications involve design or construction of surfaces by interpolating or approximating data given at points or on curves. Others consider the problem of 'reverse engineering'-giving a mathematical descrip tion of an already constructed object. We are particularly grateful to Pamela Bye (at the Institue of Mathemat ics and its Applications) for help in making arrangements; Stephanie Harding and Karen Barker (at Springer Verlag, London) for publishing this volume and to Kwan-Yee Kenneth Wong (Cambridge) for his heroic help with com piling the proceedings and for dealing with numerous technicalities arising from large and numerous computer files. Following this Preface is a listing of the programme committee who with the help of their colleagues did much work in refereeing the papers for these proceedings.

Book Synopsis Shape Interrogation for Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing by : Nicholas M. Patrikalakis
Download or read book Shape Interrogation for Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing written by Nicholas M. Patrikalakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-27 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shape interrogation is the process of extraction of information from a geometric model. It is a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. This book provides a bridge between the areas geometric modeling and solid modeling. Apart from the differential geometry topics covered, the entire book is based on the unifying concept of recasting all shape interrogation problems to the solution of a nonlinear system. It provides the mathematical fundamentals as well as algorithms for various shape interrogation methods including nonlinear polynomial solvers, intersection problems, differential geometry of intersection curves, distance functions, curve and surface interrogation, umbilics and lines of curvature, and geodesics.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Architecture and the Digital Design Process by : Peter Szalapaj
Download or read book Contemporary Architecture and the Digital Design Process written by Peter Szalapaj and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Architecture and the Digital Design Process introduces the reader to new developments in the computer modelling of design form in contemporary architectural practice through a series of detailed case studies. The book illustrates how evolving design practices use and exploit the potential of new computing technologies in a wide range of areas and application. A central thesis of this book is that technology follows design demand, rather than design adjusting to available new technology. Designers are not merely passive recipients of prescribed computing tools and techniques. Instead, they are increasingly able to express their intuitive design ideas through the rational medium of computing. The book features several contemporary building projects, each of which introduces a range of CAD and computing issues based upon the work of creative architectural and engineering design practices. These include the offices of Frank O. Gehry, Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, Anthony Hunt Associates, Peter Hubner, Szyskowitz-Kowalski, and Faulkner Brown. All these examples show what architects need to know and the skills they need to acquire to use advanced CAD technology.
