The first part discusses the imaging technique, use of contrast medium & specific types of images. The second part is organized according to anatomy (sinuses & nasopharynx, orofacial region, hypopharynx & larynx). For each of these regions, the cross-sectional anatomy, clinical examination, the appearance of tumors & metastases, & differential diagnoses are discussed in detail & with numerous illustrations. The comparative values of CT & MRI are also discussed for each area. The book aims to aid the radiologist in establishing and/or optimizing CT & MR imaging methods at his/her hospital, as well as providing a guide for differential diagnosis of less well-known diseases. It also demonstrates the spectrum of modern imaging procedures to the ENT specialist & dentist. A two-page leaflet comes with the main text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging is crucial in the multidisciplinary approach to head and neck cancer management. The rapid technological development of recent years makes it necessary for all members of the multidisciplinary team to understand the potential applications, limitations, and advantages of existing and evolving imaging technologies. It is equally important that the radiologist has sufficient clinical background knowledge to understand the clinical significance of imaging findings. This book provides an overview of the findings obtained using different imaging techniques during the evaluation of head and neck neoplasms, both before and after therapy. All anatomic areas in the head and neck are covered, and the impact of imaging on patient management is discussed in detail. The authors are recognized experts in the field, and numerous high-quality images are included. This second edition provides information on the latest imaging developments in this area, including the application of PET-CT and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

The information is provided in a clinical context and will guide radiologists as to the information the clinician actually needs when managing a patient with head and neck cancer. It will also provide the clinician with the advantages and limitations of imaging. The text therefore deals with Ultrasound, CT and MRI. The initial chapters aim to give the reader a core knowledge, which can be used in imaging by the various methods described. The subsequent chapters are directed towards clinical problems and deal with the common cancers in a logical order.

Book excerpt: This book represents the second, fully revised edition of the original volume published in 1982. Experience in neuroradiology has confirmed the outstanding value of computed tomography (CT) for the diagnosis of space-occupying lesions within the skull and orbit. It might be assumed, then, that the second edition of this book would simply represent a numerically expanded continua tion of the popular first edition. That is not the case, however. Advances in imaging techniques have promp ted the creation of a new book whose expanded title reflects its more comprehen sive nature. The added illustrations, the revised text, and the expanded circle of editors and contributors document this. Since publication of the first edition, a new modality, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has become an established neuroradiologic study. We felt it was essential to include this new modality in our book and explore its capabilities as an adjunct or alternative to CT scanning. Because of the high acquisition costs of MRI and the still small number of MR units currently in operation, we have relied in part on images furnished by other institutions and private practitioners, to whom we are indebted. Many problems relating to MR, both in terms of equipment and image interpretation, have yet to be resolved. There is no denying that we still have much to learn.

It also provides essential information on handling and analyzing imaging data. Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. CT and MRI imaging are absolutely crucial to accurate diagnosis and staging, and radiologists have to be especially familiar with the anatomy of that region of the body. In addition, they must be highly proficient in interpreting radiographic images in order to judge the patterns of metastasis, response to treatment, and the signs and patterns of recurrence. This concise but detailed book describes the latest imaging modalities for all types of head and neck cancer diagnosis in light of recent technological advances. Featuring abundant high-quality images supplemented by advice from experts on the management of each cancer, it is a valuable resource for diagnostic and general radiologists, as well as all medical staff involved in the management of head and neck cancers.

PET permits visualization of tumor metabolic or physiologic characteristics. MRI shows morphologic abnormalities and allows assessment of the functional status of tissue, including the ability to indirectly map areas of task-induced neuronal activation and to map blood volume and flow. MRS provides noninvasive biochemical information from tumors and surrounding normal tissue. By combining PET, MRI and MRS information we should be able to differentiate tumors from non-tumor lesions, characterize types or grades of tumors, monitor tumor regression, recurrence or response to therapy, and also image the location of gene delivery. This book reports updated techniques, instrumentation and clinical application of PET, MRI and MRS in cancer management.

Book excerpt: This book provides a practically applicable guide to the all the different imaging modalities used in the diagnosis and management of ENT & Head and Neck patients. It bridges the gap in understanding between surgeons treating ENT & Head and Neck conditions and radiologists who oversee the process of scan requests, interpretation and delivering reports that best inform the subsequent management. Chapters cover a variety of sub-specialist areas including plain films, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), auditory implantation, paediatrics, head and neck cancer, trauma, three dimensional (3D) reconstruction and rehabilitation including swallow. This book facilitates surgeons and radiologists to further develop their understanding of each other’s perspectives on clinical decision-making and appropriately interpreting the outputs from a range of imaging modalities. Head and Neck Imaging: A Multi-Disciplinary Team Approach is a resource well-suited to all trainees, residents, consultants who use these techniques to treat patients with head and neck symptoms. Furthermore, it is vital for those individuals preparing for exams in disciplines such as ear nose and throat, maxillofacial surgery and radiology.
