Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friction-stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process primarily used on aluminum, and is also widely used for joining dissimilar metals such as aluminum, magnesium, copper and ferrous alloys. Recently, a friction-stir processing (FSP) technique based on FSW has been used for microstructural modifications, the homogenized and refined microstructure along with the reduced porosity resulting in improved mechanical properties. Advances in friction-stir welding and processing deals with the processes involved in different metals and polymers, including their microstructural and mechanical properties, wear and corrosion behavior, heat flow, and simulation. The book is structured into ten chapters, covering applications of the technology; tool and welding design; material and heat flow; microstructural evolution; mechanical properties; corrosion behavior and wear properties. Later chapters cover mechanical alloying and FSP as a welding and casting repair technique; optimization and simulation of artificial neural networks; and FSW and FSP of polymers. Provides studies of the microstructural, mechanical, corrosion and wear properties of friction-stir welded and processed materials Considers heat generation, heat flow and material flow Covers simulation of FSW/FSP and use of artificial neural network in FSW/FSP

This book was released on 1990 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computational study of the convective heat transfer in the weld pool during gas tungsten arch (GTA) welding of Type 304 stainless steel is presented. The solution of the transport equations is based on a control volume approach which utilized directly, the integral form of the governing equations. The computational model considers buoyancy and electromagnetic and surface tension forces in the solution of convective heat transfer in the weld pool. In addition, the model treats the weld pool surface as a deformable free surface. The computational model includes weld metal vaporization and temperature dependent thermophysical properties. The results indicate that consideration of weld pool vaporization effects and temperature dependent thermophysical properties significantly influence the weld model predictions. Theoretical predictions of the weld pool surface temperature distributions and the cross-sectional weld pool size and shape wee compared with corresponding experimental measurements. Comparison of the theoretically predicted and the experimentally obtained surface temperature profiles indicated agreement with {plus minus} 8%. The predicted weld cross-section profiles were found to agree very well with actual weld cross-sections for the best theoretical models. 26 refs., 8 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two motives for studying materials processing in centrifuges. First, such research improves our understanding of the influence of acceleration and convection on materials processing. Second, there are commercial opportunities for production of unique and improved materials that cannot be prepared under normal earth conditions or in space. Through a combination of experiments and theory, we are gaining an understanding of centrifugation on phenomena of importance to materials processing. We find that it is necessary to consider not only acceleration, but also the Corio lis effect and the variation of acceleration with position. As one consequence, the vigor of buoyancy-driven convection is sometimes increased by centrifugation and sometimes decreased. Similarly, the tendency of the convection to become unstable or oscillatory may either be increased or decreased by centrifugation. On the other hand, the observed effects of centrifugation on product quality have largely gone unexplained. This volume constitutes the proceedings of The Second International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity, hosted by Clarkson University in June of 1993. The concept for a workshop on materials processing in centrifuges was born at a series of informal meetings held in Paris in 1990. The First International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity was held in May of 1991 in Dubna, USSR, on the banks of the Volga River. The proceedings of this workshop was published in 1992 as a special issue of the Journal of Crystal Growth.

Book excerpt: The increasing use of automated laser welding processes causes high demands on process monitoring. This work demonstrates methods that use a camera mounted on the focussing optics to perform pre-, in-, and post-process monitoring of welding processes. The implementation uses machine learning methods. All algorithms consider the integration into industrial processes. These challenges include a small database, limited industrial manufacturing inference hardware, and user acceptance.
