Book excerpt: Computational fluid dynamics, CFD, has become an indispensable tool for many engineers. This book gives an introduction to CFD simulations of turbulence, mixing, reaction, combustion and multiphase flows. The emphasis on understanding the physics of these flows helps the engineer to select appropriate models to obtain reliable simulations. Besides presenting the equations involved, the basics and limitations of the models are explained and discussed. The book combined with tutorials, project and power-point lecture notes (all available for download) forms a complete course. The reader is given hands-on experience of drawing, meshing and simulation. The tutorials cover flow and reactions inside a porous catalyst, combustion in turbulent non-premixed flow, and multiphase simulation of evaporation spray respectively. The project deals with design of an industrial-scale selective catalytic reduction process and allows the reader to explore various design improvements and apply best practice guidelines in the CFD simulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, fluid mixing and the related multiphase contacting processes have always been regarded as an empirical technology. Many aspects of mixing, dispersing and contacting were related to power draw, but understanding of the phenomena was limited or qualitative at the most. In particular during the last decade, however, plant operation targets have tightened and product specifications have become stricter. The public awareness as to safety and environmental hygiene has increased. The drive towards larger degrees of sustainability in the process industries has urged for lower amounts of solvents and for higher yields and higher selectivities in chemical reactors. All this has resulted in a market pull: the need for more detailed insights in flow phenomena and processes and for better verifiable design and operation methods. Developments in miniaturisation of sensors and circuits as well as in computer technology have rendered leaps possible in computer simulation and animation and in measuring and monitoring techniques. This volume encourages a leap forward in the field of mixing by the current, overwhelming wealth of sophisticated measuring and computational techniques. This leap may be made possible by modern instrumentation, signal and data analysis, field reconstruction algorithms, computational modelling techniques and numerical recipes.

Book excerpt: Last four decades, with the increase in everlasting need there is still enormous advancements require in biological and chemical laboratory processes related to microfluidics devices. Microfluidics technology has found out plentiful uses at micro scale level e.g. flow cytometry, micro mixing, analysis of chemical and synthesis, particle sorting and generation of droplet. The use of various flow sensors and sensing systems at micro scale have drastically changed the scenario of higher end fields e.g. drug discovery, biomedical analyses, genetics, proteomics, biological and chemical reactions etc. Need of mixing is to take out high resolution and sensitive separations to distinguish very minute quantities of samples and reagents which makes this system comparatively inexpensive and requires short time analysis. The aim of the present work is to understand the physics of the mixing of fluids within micro channel using computational fluid dynamics and experimental technique. Four different types of mixing angles (300, 450, 600, 900) and three fluid mixing case of water+water; water+ethanol and water+glycerol were selected. The simulation results show that at 600 mixing angle minimum pressure drop and maximum outlet velocity was experienced as compared to other angles. At a constant inlet flow rate of 0.5 lph and at 600 degree angle the percentage variation between experimental and simulation results was observed to be in the range of 2.97-3.14% in water+water; 2.31-2.83% in water+ethanol and 19.62- 20.56% in water+glycerol case.

Book excerpt: Static mixers are an attractive alternative for the mixing of chemicals in water treatment plants. The attraction comes from the fact that static mixers do not require an external input of energy and do not have moving parts. Static mixers consist of mixing elements fixed on the inside of a pipe of channel. The elements do not move. Chemicals, added just upstream of the mixers, mix with the bulk fluid because of the complex, three-dimensional fluid motion generated by the elements. The goal of this project is to explore the use of static mixers in two of the key processes in drinking water treatment: for the mixing of coagulants for destabilization and the mixing of disinfectants for the inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in disinfection. The role of mixing in both of these processes is not well understood. But for each process experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that, at least in some circumstances, the mixing environment provided when chemicals are introduced into the flow will affect the resulting destabilization or inactivation.

Readers will discover a thorough explanation of the FVM numerics and algorithms used for the simulation of incompressible and compressible fluid flows, along with a detailed examination of the components needed for the development of a collocated unstructured pressure-based CFD solver. Two particular CFD codes are explored. The first is uFVM, a three-dimensional unstructured pressure-based finite volume academic CFD code, implemented within Matlab. The second is OpenFOAMĀ®, an open source framework used in the development of a range of CFD programs for the simulation of industrial scale flow problems. With over 220 figures, numerous examples and more than one hundred exercise on FVM numerics, programming, and applications, this textbook is suitable for use in an introductory course on the FVM, in an advanced course on numerics, and as a reference for CFD programmers and researchers.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were (1) to conduct experiments on the mixing and hydrodynamics of jets flowing into water storage tanks, (2) to quantify the extent of mixing in order to compare the effects of different nozzle designs, (3) to determine the effect of density differences on mixing and to determine nozzle designs and the required inlet momentum flux to overcome the effects of density differences, and (4) to provide recommendations for the design of storage tanks that enhance water quality by maximizing mixing.
