Book excerpt: The aerodynamics of converging free jets was studied to determine the characteristics of the flow field involved in the manufacture of meltblown fibers. The two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic analysis was validated through comparison to boundary layer theory. The converging jet geometry consisted of two symmetric rectangular channels 30ð from the axis of symmetry, 0.013 inches wide, converging toward a free expansion region at standard atmospheric conditions. The two channels were 0.015 inches apart at the exit, and the perpendicular wall region between them was flush with the upper and lower plate faces of the meltblowing die. Upstream boundary conditions of 10 psig and 400F̊ were applied at the channel entrances as the nominal case and yielded an internal flow Reynolds number near the channel exit of 4.5 x 103. The computational model utilized was based on the governing Navier-Stokes equations and included variable ideal gas density, the k-epsilon turbulence model, the energy equation, and time dependence. Under these conditions, the resulting jet exhibited equilibrium even with asymmetric upstream pressure boundary conditions of up to 20% difference. The computed velocity flow field exhibited three separate regions: zone 1, where the jets exhibit individually distinct velocity profiles; zone 2, a mixing region with an intermediate velocity profile and the maximum turbulence; and zone 3, where the individual signatures of the jets are no longer present and the velocity profile assumes the theoretical profile of a single jet of similar mass flow rate. Flow parameters were at their most complex in the expansion region in close proximity to the jet nozzle exits (zones 1 and 2), including maxima in velocity, vorticity, compressibility, temperature, recirculation, and turbulence.

Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been applied extensively to great benefit in the food processing sector. Its numerous applications include: predicting the gas flow pattern and particle histories, such as temperature, velocity, residence time, and impact position during spray drying; modeling of ovens to provide information about temperature and airflow pattern throughout the baking chamber to enhance heat transfer and in turn final product quality; designing hybrid heating ovens, such as microwave-infrared, infrared-electrical or microwave-electrical ovens for rapid baking; model the dynamics of gastrointestinal contents during digestion based on the motor response of the GI tract and the physicochemical properties of luminal contents; retort processing of canned solid and liquid foods for understanding and optimization of the heat transfer processes. This Brief will recapitulate the various applications of CFD modeling, discuss the recent developments in this field, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of CFD when applied in the food industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is aimed at understanding the effects of changing the upstream nozzle geometry on the development of rectangular free jets. An existing converging rectangular nozzle with an exit aspect ratio of 4 and a circular inlet (AR4 nozzle) has been used as the basic configuration for this work. The study is primarily based on the results of numerical simulations wherein the internal geometry variation is accomplished by changing the inlet aspect ratio (AR,) and the length of the converging section, expressed as a ratio with respect to the length of the nozzle (called 'converging section ratio*, CSR); all the other parameters are kept constant. The results from LDA experiments done on the AR4 nozzle are presented and used as validation data for the CPD simulations. Analyses of the numerical results help in understanding the variation of the jet spreading for different combinations of AR, and CSR. Two parameters are identified for describing the jet development: the cross-over point (XC), defined as the location downstream of the exit where the jet half-velocity-widths (B) along the major and minor axes are equal, and the difference in the half-velocity-widths at 30 nozzle equivalent diameters (Dm) from the exit (AB30), to ascertain the occurrence of axis-switching. For a given AR, XC varies linearly with CSR; the variation of XC is non-linear with AR, for a constant CSR. The A1330 variation is non-linear with both AR, and CSR; the other variable being kept constant. The data obtained from the simulations are further used to propose two parametric models which can be used to predict the occurrence of axis-switching, within the scope of this work. The parametric models are validated and future work is proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial manufacturers are increasingly using very high pressure water jets for the cleaning and breaking up of materials. Until recently, the demolition of reinforced concrete has been a long and difficult process, but developments in the design and use of high pressure water jets have made this a cleaner and faster process with many other applications in civil, construction and environmental engineering. Andreas Momber, a well known expert in water jet and abrasive water jet cutting technology has produced a unique and comprehensive book dealing with the fundamentals of the hydrodemolition process. Coverage includes equipment, processes, surface quality aspects, demolition with abrasive water jets, pulsed liquid jets, alternative applications and safety aspects. This book will help you to...•Understand the hydrodemolition process and its rewards, enabling you to achieve a cleaner, faster process in the demolition of concrete surfaces and reinforced concrete. •Learn when and where hydrodemolition can be used •Understand the costs, advantages and safety aspects involved•Apply the technique to new applications in your industry such as cleaning and waste management•Purchase the appropriate equipment, cutting time and maintenance costs * Written by a well known expert in the field of water jet and abrasive water jet cutting technology* First comprehensive book in the growing area of hydrodemolition of concrete surfaces and reinforced concrete * Coverage includes the theory and practice of the hydrodemolition process

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some experimental and theoretical studies have been made of axisymmetric free jets exhausting from sonic and supersonic nozzles into still air and into supersonic streams with a view toward problems associated with propulsive jets and the investigation of these problems. For jets exhausting into still air, consideration is given to the effects of jet Mach number, nozzle divergence angle, and jet static-pressure ratio upon jet structure, jet wavelength, and the shape and curvature of the jet boundary. Studies of the effects of the ratio of specific heats of the jets are included as are observations pertaining to jet noise and jet simulation. For jets exhausting into supersonic streams, an attempt has been made to present primarily theoretical curves of the type that may be useful in evaluating certain jet interference effects and in formulating experimental studies. The primary variables considered are jet Mach number, free-stream Mach number, jet static-pressure ratio, ratio of specific heats of the jet, nozzle exit angle, and boattail angle. The simulation problem and the case of a hypothetical hypersonic vehicle are examined. A few experimental observations are included.

Book excerpt: This monograph is a collection of reviews that presents results obtained from new and somewhat unconventional methods used to fight multiple drug resistance (MDR) acquired by microorganisms and tumours. Two directions are considered: (i) the modification of non-antibiotic medicines by exposure to un-coherent, or laser optical radiation to obtain photoproducts that receive bactericidal or, possibly, tumouricidal properties and (ii) the development of new vectors (micrometric droplets of solutions containing medicinal agents) to transport medicines to targets based on optical and micro spectroscopic methods. Chapters shed light on pendant droplets used for antibiotic drug delivery, the science of lasers and their interactions with fluids in pendant droplets and spectroscopic analyses of droplets used to treat MDR infections. It therefore equips researchers and medical professionals with information about tools that enable them to respond to medical emergencies in challenging environments. The intended readership for this monograph includes graduate students, medical doctors, fluid physicists, biologists, photochemists, and experts in drug delivery methods employed in extreme conditions (such as those found in outer space and hypergravity conditions) who are learning about using techniques such as laser spectroscopy, biophotonics and optofluidics/microfluidics.
