Book excerpt: Excerpt from Computation of the Transonic Flow About a Swept Wing in the Presence of an Engine Nacelle A principal goal of computational transonic aerodynamics is to develop computa tional methods for the analysis of transonic flows and for the design of efficient transonic air craft. We are interested in particular in the problem of designing wings with only weak shocks at a given Mach number and angle of attack. Methods, which we shall describe below, exist for the design of shockless transonic airfoils and for computing the transonic ow about a given wing. One approach to the design of a low drag transonic swept wing is to start with a shockiess airfoil in each wing section. Three-dimensional effects will cause shocks on such a wing, but we expect them not to be too severe. By small readjustments of the wing surface, which can be made by a code which treats the wing surface as a free boun dary, we can redesign the wing to reduce the strength of the shocks. Our method takes this program one step further. If an obstacle, such as an engine nacelle, is placed in the ow near an almost shockless wing, sizeable shocks can be expected to appear on the wing. We have incorporated a model of such an obstacle into the free boundary design code of Bauer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Results computed by a finite-difference, relaxation algorithm are presented for the supercritical flow (M = 0.825) about the C-141 airplane wing, which has sweep, taper, and twist. Comparisons with both wind-tunnel and flight data indicate that computed solutions of the classical transonic small disturbance equation can accurately simulate high Reynolds number flows when the shock sweep angle is small. It is also shown that this equation poorly approximates the complete potential equation when embedded shock waves are swept at angles greater than about 15 deg. Hence, a more consistent small disturbance equation is derived for use in more general cases.
