This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational techniques have become an indispensable part of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Design. In conjunction with refined experimental methods and powerful hardware, they enable us to analyze and visualize biomolecular structures, simulate their motions and to a variable degree understand their physicochemical properties and function. In addition, they provide essentially the only way to analyze and correlate the astronomical amounts of experimental sequence and structural data accumulating in international databases. We have good reasons to believe that further advances in this area will eventually enable us to predict with sufficient accuracy many structural and functional properties of fairly large biomolecules, given their sequence and specified environmental conditions. However, it is also important to realize that in achieving this goal, we encounter several serious problems of conceptual and methodological nature, the solution of which requires new approaches and algorithms. For example, we need better force fields, more efficient optimization routines, an adequate description of electrostatics and hydration, reliable methods to compute free energies, and ways to extent the length of molecular dynamics simulations by several orders of magnitude.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of current topics in computational molecular biology. Computational molecular biology, or bioinformatics, draws on the disciplines of biology, mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering. It provides the computational support for functional genomics, which links the behavior of cells, organisms, and populations to the information encoded in the genomes, as well as for structural genomics. At the heart of all large-scale and high-throughput biotechnologies, it has a growing impact on health and medicine. This survey of computational molecular biology covers traditional topics such as protein structure modeling and sequence alignment, and more recent ones such as expression data analysis and comparative genomics. It combines algorithmic, statistical, database, and AI-based methods for studying biological problems. The book also contains an introductory chapter, as well as one on general statistical modeling and computational techniques in molecular biology. Each chapter presents a self-contained review of a specific subject. Not for sale in China, including Hong Kong.

Book excerpt: While the field of computational structural biology or structural bioinformatics is rapidly developing, there are few books with a relatively complete coverage of such diverse research subjects studied in the field as X-ray crystallography computing, NMR structure determination, potential energy minimization, dynamics simulation, and knowledge-based modeling. This book helps fill the gap by providing such a survey on all the related subjects. Comprising a collection of lecture notes for a computational structural biology course for the Program on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Iowa State University, the book is in essence a comprehensive summary of computational structural biology based on the author's own extensive research experience, and a review of the subject from the perspective of a computer scientist or applied mathematician. Readers will gain a deeper appreciation of the biological importance and mathematical novelty of the research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Molecular Structural Biology reviews the mathematical and physical foundations of molecular structural biology. Based on these fundamental concepts, it then describes molecular structure and explains basic genetic mechanisms. Given the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of research, early career researchers and those shifting into an adjacent field often require a "fundamentals" book to get them up-to-speed on the foundations of a particular field. This book fills that niche. Provides a current and easily digestible resource on molecular structural biology, discussing both foundations and the latest advances Addresses critical issues surrounding macromolecular structures, such as structure-based drug discovery, single-particle analysis, computational molecular biology/molecular dynamic simulation, cell signaling and immune response, macromolecular assemblies, and systems biology Presents discussions that ultimately lead the reader toward a more detailed understanding of the basis and origin of disease

Book excerpt: Volume 17 is the second in a special topic series devoted to modern techniques in protein NMR, under the Biological Magnetic Resonance series. Volume 16, with the subtitle Modern Techniques in Protein NMR , is the first in this series. These two volumes present some of the recent, significant advances in the biomolecular NMR field with emphasis on developments during the last five years. We are honored to have brought together in these volume some of the world s foremost experts who have provided broad leadership in advancing this field. Volume 16 contains - vances in two broad categories: I. Large Proteins, Complexes, and Membrane Proteins and II. Pulse Methods. Volume 17 contains major advances in: I. Com- tational Methods and II. Structure and Dynamics. The opening chapter of volume 17 starts with a consideration of some important aspects of modeling from spectroscopic and diffraction data by Wilfred van Gunsteren and his colleagues. The next two chapters deal with combined automated assignments and protein structure determination, an area of intense research in many laboratories since the traditional manual methods are often inadequate or laborious in handling large volumes of NMR data on large proteins. First, Werner Braun and his associates describe their experience with the NOAH/DIAMOD protocol developed in their laboratory.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications MATHEMATICAL APPROACHES TO BIOMOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS is one of the two volumes based on the proceedings of the 1994 IMA Sum mer Program on "Molecular Biology" and comprises Weeks 3 and 4 of the four-week program. Weeks 1 and 2 appeared as Volume 81: Genetic Mapping and DNA Sequencing. We thank Jill P. Mesirov, Klaus Schulten, and De Witt Sumners for organizing Weeks 3 and 4 of the workshop and for editing the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (National Center for Human Genome Research), the National Science Foundation (NSF) (Biological Instrumen tation and Resources), and the Department of Energy (DOE), whose fi nancial support made the summer program possible. A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE The revolutionary progress in molecular biology within the last 30 years opens the way to full understanding of the molecular structures and mech anisms of living organisms. Interdisciplinary research in mathematics and molecular biology is driven by ever growing experimental, theoretical and computational power. The mathematical sciences accompany and support much of the progress achieved by experiment and computation as well as provide insight into geometric and topological properties of biomolecular structure and processes. This volume consists of a representative sample of the papers presented during the last two weeks of the month-long Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications Summer 1994 Program in Molecular Biology.
