Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressed air has many applications in industry. Delivering compressed air to a manufacturing facility is an expensive operation and it requires costly equipment that consumes significant amounts of electricity and needs frequent maintenance. Roughly 80 to 90 percent of the electricity used to operate compressed air systems is converted to low-temperature waste heat. This lost energy can quickly add up, each year costing individual facilities as much as double the purchase and installation cost (first-cost) of the entire system. The ideal time to think about your compressed air system is before it is installed.Air Compressors deserve independent treatment due to many reasons. There is a wider choice of different types of compressor designs each operating at different efficiencies and suitable for specific application. The type of compressor decided upon has direct implications on the lifetime energy costs. Also the decision as to a single compressor of large capacity versus multi-compressor installation where each compressor has a smaller capacity than the demand influences the possible energy savings considerably. This 6 -hour Quick Book Course provides comprehensive information on the compressed air systems. This course is relevant to anyone needing to know more about compressed air production and use, relevant health and safety issues, legislation and energy efficiency. Previous knowledge of the subject is not required. The book includes a multiple type quiz comprising 30 questions at the end. Learning ObjectiveAt the conclusion of this course, the student will: * Understand various types of compressors; their applications, advantages and limitations; * Understand various types of system controls - their pros and cons; * Understand how the control systems are matched to the needs of the users; * Understand the key components of compressed air system and learn how each component function; * Understand the air storage, air drying, piping, filtration and air cleaning methods; * Understand the limits of dew point suppression in refrigerant and desiccant dryers; * Understand the different types of filters and how coalescing filters benefit in removal of lubricant and moisture; * Understand the difference between SCFM, ICFM and ACFM; * Understand the pros and cons of single loop verses ring main systems; * Understand how to quantify and select appropriate compressor for base and trim demand; * Understand what features to specify and what information to seek when making a compressed air proposal; * Understand the compressed air system assessment procedure and energy audit methodology; * Understand the common losses in compressed air systems and the ways to conserve energy; * Understand the routine maintenance schedule for air compressors; * Learn a generic checklist for energy efficiency in compressed air system; * Understand the engineering formulae and technical relationship between compressor motor power-draw and process variables; and * Learn by example the method for evaluating compressed air costs.

This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind power and photovoltaic energy play a significant role in sustainable energy systems. However, these two renewable energy sources do not generate electrical energy on demand and are subject to natural fluctuations. Thus, the need for compensatory measures arises. Compressed air energy storage power plants (CAES) are a possible solution to providing negative and positive control energy in the electric grid. However, in contrast to other energy storage devices such as pumped hydro energy storage or batteries, the storage medium compressed air hardly contains any energy (or more precisely: enthalpy). Yet, compressed air storage allows the operation of highly efficient gas turbines, which are not only particularly fast available but also achieve better efficiency than combined cycle power plants used today, as illustrated by the example of the modern gas and steam power plant Irsching with ηtc = 60%from 2011 compared to the 20 years older McIntosh CAES with ηtc = 82.4 %. In this thesis, the calculation methods for the thermodynamics of the CAES process are presented and validated by measured data from the operations of the CAES power plant Huntorf. Both the steady state and the dynamic (time-dependent) analyses of the process take place. The characteristic value efficiency is discussed in detail, since numerous different interpretations for CAES exist in the literature. A new calculation method for the electric energy storage efficiency is presented, and a method for the calculation of an economically equivalent electricity storage efficiency is developed. Consideration is given to the transformation of the CAES process into a hydrogen-driven and, thus, greenhouse gas-free process. Finally, a model CAES system is tested in a 100 % renewable model environment. Consequently, it can be stated that in the steady-state thermodynamic calculation in particular, the consideration of realistic isentropic efficiencies of compressors and turbines is essential to correctly estimate the characteristic values of the process. Furthermore, a steadystate view should always be accompanied by dynamic considerations, since some process characteristics are always time-dependent. The simulation shows that by mapping transient operating conditions, the overall efficiency of the system must be corrected downwards. Nevertheless, in the model environment of a 100 % renewable energy system, it has been shown that a CAES is a useful addition that can provide long-term energy storage.

Book excerpt: In the field of compressed gases and related equipment, there is an expanding core of essential knowledge that people handling and using these materials should be familiar with or should know where to find when necessary. The focus of this book concerns the properties and the accepted means of trans portation, storage, and handling of compressed gases. This Handbook is simul taneously intended as an overview of the subject and a source of supplementary information. It is also intended to serve as a guide to pertinent federal regulatory requirements and published standards of the Compressed Gas Association and other standards-writing bodies. Readers are advised that the CGA technical pamphlets remain the official state ment of policy by the Association on a particular matter. Reference is made throughout this text to the numerous technical pamphlets published by the Com pressed Gas Association. Some of these publications have been incorporated by reference into federal, state, provincial, and local regulations. Since these pam phlets are reviewed on a periodic basis, wherever the text of this Handbook may be found in conflict with corresponding information in the CGA technical pam phlets, the latter shall take precedence.
