Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 20: January to December, 1915 This arrangement suggested high economy to begin with, since to have continually com pressed fresh air from the atmosphere, dcliv ering it at 100 lh., would have required a compressor of five or six times the volumetric capacity, with two stage compression, inter cooling and all that, with more than a pro portional aggregate of power consumption. The using of the same air continuously also gave control of its condition as to humidity and temperature, which in this case was of great importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 26: September, 1921 Pressure may be applied from agencies at the surface through the medium of air or natural gas, or the subterranean pressure may, in effect. Be augmented by a reversal of the compressor, i. E., inducing a partial vacuum. In some districts this latter procedure has answered quite successfully, but there are oil bearing areas where the subterranean condi tions do not lend themselves to a satisfactory operation of this system. To meet the latter circumstances a subsurface pressure must be built up by mechanical means to replace the pressure originally exerted by the pent-up gas. In certain fields gas is tapped from the sand a few feet above the oil-producing formation, and this gas is compressed and forced below to again promote the desired movement of the petroleum. This practice has its drawbacks because it not only tends to waste gas but it subsequently lessens the chance of recover ing much of the oil which finds its way into the gas sand and not toward the shot holes of the wells. The yield of a well may be increased considerably by recourse to gas pumping. As just described. The benefits are as a rule but temporary; and this method of stimulation would not be at all profitable if it were not for the greater measure of gasoline that can be obtained from the gas that is thus enriched by contact with the oil. This gas returns to the surface and is drawn off at the casing head for treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 14: January to December, 1909, Inclusive In considering the question of pressures it should be remembered that the pressures named are those that should be obtained at the sand blast, which can be confirmed by attaching a pressure gage to the sand tank, and that if the air has to be led to any distance from the air compressor and receiver, the de livery pipe should be materially increased to allow for friction, otherwise the pressure will fall off and the action of the sand blast will not be up to requirements. With but little foresight and at a very little additional expense, air delivery pipes of ample diameter can be installed up to the sand blast, giving the benefit of the full pressure as well as that of a considerable body of air behind the sand jets. The article above quoted then speaks of the trouble which may be caused by moisture in the air, If the air pipe is long, it says, con densation may take place within it, which if allowed to enter the sand tank would moisten the sand, and care should be taken to remove this either by trapping or by arranging in the piping a U bend, from the bottom of which any condensed water may be drawn off, and by suitably jacketing the main line. It is the function of the air receiver to dry the air. If the air in the receiver is at its high est pressure and at its lowest temperature the moisture will be deposited there and no mois ture will make its presence known. With the receiver located near the compressor, as is customary, the air is not cool enough, but with a long pipe to traverse, not jacketed, and a receiver near the work the air should always be dry enough. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 26: August, 1921 By starting the vacuum pump, and thus promoting the exhaustion of the vacuum pan. A suction is created which causes the milk to flow up into it from the hot wells. As the milk rises and submerges one coil after ah other inside the pan, the attendant admits steam successively to the jacket and to the various coils. Condensing takes approximately two hours; and the consistency of the milk is tested from time to time by means of hydro meters. It follows logically that a milk rich in fat will yield more of the condensed pro duct than milk low in solids. In round figures, it requires approximately gallons of fresh milk to give one gallon of condensed milk. The vacuum occasioned by the pump ranges from 25 inches to 28 inches in the pan, and the higher the partial vacuum the lower the boiling point. As a matter of interest, water boils at a temperature slightly over 126 de grees Fahrenheit in a vacuum of nearly inches, while with a vacuum of 28 inches the water will boil at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Even then, the miner must be sufficiently expert to place all his charges, connect the fuses or detonators, and reach a place of security within an interval of ten to fifteen minutes. How quickly the miner has to work can be grasped by the following de tails. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
