Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy promises to be a landmark in the fields of psychotherapeutic theory and practice. A comprehensive revision of its predecessor, The Psychology of Existence, co-edited by Kirk Schneider and Rollo May, Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy combines clear and updated guidelines for practice with vivid and timely case vignettes. These vignettes feature the very latest in both mainstream and existential therapeutic integrative application, by the top innovators in the field. The book highlights several notable dimensions: a novel and comprehensive theory of integrative existential practice; a premium on mainstream integrations of existential theory as well as existential-humanistic integrations of mainstream theory; a focus on integrative mainstream as well as existential-humanistic practitioners, students, and theorists; a discussion of short-term and cognitive-behavioral existential-integrative strategies; a focus on ethnic and diagnostic diversity, from case studies of multicultural populations to vignettes on gender, sexuality, and power, and from contributions to the treatment of alcoholism to those elucidating religiosity, psychoses, and intersubjectivity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all long for peace within ourselves, families, communities, countries, and throughout the world. We wonder what we can do about the multitude of con?icts currently wreaking havoc across the globe and the continuous reports of violence in communities as well as within families. Most of the time, we contemplate solutions beyond our reach, and overlook a powerful tool that is at our disposal: forgiveness. As a genocide survivor, I know something about it. As the genocide unfolded in Rwanda in 1994, I was devastated by what I believed to be the inevitable deaths of my loved ones. The news that my parents and my seven siblings had indeed been killed was simply unbearable. Anger and bitterness became my daily companions. Likewise, I continued to wonder how the Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda could possibly reconcile after one of the most horrendous genocides of the 20th century. It was not until I came to understand the notion of forgiveness that I was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Common wisdom suggests that forgiveness comes after a perpetrator makes a genuine apology. This wisdom informs us that in the aftermath of a wrongdoing, the offender must acknowledge the wrong he or she has done, express remorse, express an apology, commit to never repeating said harm, and make reparations to theextentpossible.Onlythencanthevictimforgiveandagreetoneverseekrevenge.

Book excerpt: "The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology presents a historic overview, theory, methodology, applications to practice and to broader settings, and an epilogue for the new millennium...The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology is an academic text excellently suited for collegiate education and research...The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology will be the inspiration and reference source for the next generation of humanists in all fields." - Lynn Seiser, Ph.D., THE THERAPIST "This volume represents an essential milestone and defining moment for humanistic psychology.... [It] belongs on the shelf of everyone who identifies with the humanistic movement and can serve as an excellent resource for those who would like to offer their students more than the perfunctory three paragraphs designated to humanistic psychology found in most introductory psychology books" -Donadrian Rice, CONTEMPORARY PSYCHOLOGY "Psychologists already partial to humanistic perspectives will take great pleasure in reading this book, and those seeking to expand their understanding of psychological humanism will find themselves much informed, perhaps even inspired, by it." - Irving B. Weiner, PSYCHOTHERAPY RESEARCH "A cornucopia of valuable historical, theoretical, and practical information for the Humanistic Psychologist." — Irvin Yalom, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry, Stanford University "The editors represent both the founding generation and contemporary leadership and the contributors they have enlisted include most of the active voices in the humanistic movement. I know of no better source for either insiders or outsiders to grasp what humanistic psychology is about, and what either insiders or outsiders should do about it." — M. Brewster Smith, University of California at Santa Cruz "As a humanist it offered me a breadth I had not known existed, as a researcher it offered me an excellent statement of in depth research procedures to get closer to human experience, as a practitioner it offered me inspiration. For all those who work with and explore human experience, you can not afford to miss the voice of the third force so excellently conveyed in this comprehensive coverage of its unique view of human possibility and how to harness it." — Leslie S. Greenberg, York University Irvin Yalom, M. Brewster Smith, Leslie S. Greenberg, Inspired by James F. T. Bugental′s classic, Challenges of Humanistic Psychology (1967), The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology represents the latest scholarship in the resurgent field of humanistic psychology and psychotherapy. Set against trends toward psychological standardization and medicalization, the handbook provides a rich tapestry of reflection by the leading person-centered scholars of our time. Their range in topics is far-reaching—from the historical, theoretical, and methodological, to the spiritual, psychotherapeutic, and multicultural. Psychology is poised for a renaissance, and this handbook plays a critical role in that transformation. As increasing numbers of students and professionals rebel against mechanizing trends, they are looking for the fuller, deeper, and more personal psychological orientation that this handbook promotes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books about refugees focus on their trauma, loss, and victimhood. Refugees are often regarded as problems for governments and social services in the countries where they seek asylum. This unique book presents a very different view. Coupling existential themes with politics and psychology, Political Refugees tells the story of a number of Iranian political refugees, through case studies and through Armin Danesh’s own life story. Danesh has more than three decades of experience of working with refugees who have survived trauma and who continue to work for the causes close to their hearts. All the refugees presented here were politically engaged and suffered as a consequence. In their new home country, however, they not only survived but were reborn and forged new opportunities. The book demonstrates people's capacity to transform themselves through crisis. The stories told will be invaluable for organizations or individuals who study or work with refugees or anyone who has suffered extreme adversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those in the counseling profession are interacting more with people from other cultures, the U.S. sphere of influence throughout the world is spreading, increasingly, we are providing services to clients who are not Caucasian or of European heritage, and our educational programs have been active in training both domestic students of diverse ethnic backgrounds as well as foreign students. These factors combine to contribute to the need for those who provide counseling to understand the elements involved in interacting with a wide spectrum of people. This book meets that need by providing a brief synopsis on such topics as common factors, values, universals, cross-cultural competence, and models, approaches, and psychological perspectives of human behavior (theories of personality). The emphasis is on material that relies more on the use of the scientific method and data instead of anecdotal and experiential literature. For the reader who is interested in obtaining information from which statements are derived, there are references to investigate the material further. Unlike other book that stress the barriers between counselor and client, this book adds the perspective that there are factors that facilitate interactions between the two. There are also frequent cross-cultural examples in the book. To facilitate awareness of similarities and differences in views of human behavior, samples of African, Arab, Chinese, and European/American perspectives are represented. There is also a relatively large section on applications. This consists of such subjects as cross-cultural aspects of psychological theories, ethics, research, tests, Euro-American approaches and experiences, client characteristics, client and counselor interactions, and therapeutic techniques. Many other topics are covered, as well. Students and professionals in the fields of counseling and psychology will find this book to be an invaluable addition to their library.
