Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating aspect of many of the selenium- and tellurium-containing compounds described in this volume is that they are built up from octahedral Mo6 clusters which are surrounded by eight other atoms X in the form of a cube: Mo6X8. The Mo atoms occupy the centers of the faces of the X8 cube. The interesting variety in the substiution of the X positions can be encountered throughout the whole volume. The X atoms can be of a single element as in Mo6Te8, but can also be statistically occupied by two elements, e.g., in Mo6(Te,S)8, or even by more elements as in Mo6(Te,Se)8-yIy. In addition, there are channels with vacant positions between the Mo6X8 clusters in the diagonal direction of the X8 cube. These vacant positions offer more possibilities for the fantasy of the chemist.

Book excerpt: For the first time the discipline of modern inorganic chemistry has been systematized according to a plan constructed by a council of editorial advisors and consultants, among them three Nobel laureates (E.O. Fischer, H. Taube and G. Wilkinson). Rather than producing a collection of unrelated review articles, the series creates a framework which reflects the creative potential of this scientific discipline. Thus, it stimulates future development by identifying areas which are fruitful for further research. The work is indexed in a unique way by a structured system which maximizes its usefulness to the reader. It augments the organization of the work by providing additional routes of access for specific compounds, reactions and other topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 3rd supplement continues the updating of the original 20 volumes on boron compounds published between 1974 and 1979. The first supplement consisting of 3 volumes covered all the literature uniformly up to the end of 1977, whereas the two volumes of the 2nd supplement have extended the literature coverage of boron compounds to 1980 and the four volumes of the 3rd supplement to 1984. The present volume continues the description of boron compounds with halogens, presenting those with chlorine, bromine and iodine. The compounds with chalcogens are completed here along with those of boron with S, Se, Te and Po. The final chapter on carboranes contains the carboranes themselves, together with metallacarboranes, and in the last section a description of carborane-containing polymers, mostly derived from the three isomeric dicarbadodecarboranes. Volume 4 of the 3rd supplement brings this supplement series to an end. It will be supplemented by a separately appearing index volume, which contains all the boron compounds dealt with in volumes 1 - 4 of this supplement series.

Book excerpt: Part 22 concludes the description of mononuclear organotin compounds containing bonds between tin and a transition metal. The Group-VIII compounds occupy the largest portion of this volume and are subdivided into the subgroups of iron, cobalt, and nickel. The molecular structure of many of these compounds has been elucidated in addition to the standard spectroscopic methods. Compounds of copper, silver, and gold, although virtually unknown, are included in the present volume, since several organotin cuprates have been prepared intermediately and used in situ as regio- and stereoselective reagents in organic chemistry.

Book excerpt: Gmelin's Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry, presently comprising over 600 volumes, is the most comprehensive collection of chemical and physical data of the elements and their compounds in the world. It is Gmelin's first aim to assemble and systematically classify the research findings scattered throughout the innumerable publications of the international primary literature. The reduction of this mass of data into readily usable form combines exhaustive coverage of all published material, thorough and objective assessment of all results, strictly logical grouping of related facts, and modern monographic presentation. This vast amount of information is classified on the basis of the chemical elements, which in itself contributes to "user friendliness". A survey of the contents of the Handbook is given in the Complete Catalog (published every second year, with supplements in between), which can, thus, be very helpful when beginning a search. Access to a specific compound becomes even easier through consultation of the Formula Indexvolumes. For over three years the Gmelin Formula Index (plus the Complete Catalog entries) has been available as an online database, GFI, from STN. Online searches provide for a most comfortable and fast access to the Handbook. GFI is the first constituent of the complete Gmelin database presently under development. Subscribers to the Handbook are entitled to a 50 % discount when searching GFI online. Available free-of-charge: Gmelin Newsletter (2 issues/year) Gmelin Complete Catalog or Catalog Supplement brochures on special Handbook subjects Gmelin poster

Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: A Handbook of Lattice Spacing and Structures of Metals and Alloys is a 12-chapter handbook that describes the structures and lattice spacings of all binary and ternary alloys. This book starts with an introduction to the accurate determination of structure and lattice spacings. The subsequent chapters deal with the role of structure determination and lattice spacings in alloy formation, as well as the application of this determination to the equilibrium diagram examination. These topics are followed by discussions on the correlation of lattice spacing and magnetic property, including X-ray crystallographic data for those structures allotted a “Strukturbericht type. The remaining chapters contain table lists information about the crystal structures, densities, and expansion coefficients of the elements. These chapters also present further information about lattice spacing and structure determination on metals in alphabetical order. This book is of value to physicists and metallurgists.

Book excerpt: By browsing about 10 000 000 scientific articles of over 200 major journals mainly in a 'cover to cover approach' some 200 000 publications were selected. The extracted data is part of the following fundamental material research fields: crystal structures (S), phase diagrams (also called constitution) (C) and the comprehensive field of intrinsic physical properties (P). This work has been done systematically starting with the literature going back to 1900. The above mentioned research field codes (S, C, P) as well as the chemical systems investigated in each publication were included in the present work. The aim of the Inorganic Substances Bibliography is to provide researchers with a comprehensive compilation of all up to now published scientific publications on inorganic systems in only three handy volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a brand new treatment of Ancient Greek (AG) verb-first (V1) compounds. In AG, the very existence of this type is surprising: its left-oriented structure goes against the right-oriented structure of the compound system, in which there also exists a large class of verb-final (V2) compounds (many of which express the same agentive semantics). While past studies have privileged either the historical dimension or the assessment of semantic and stylistic issues over a systematic analysis of V1 compounds, this book provides a comprehensive corpus of appellative and onomastic forms, which are studied vis-à-vis V2 ones. The diachronic dimension (how these compounds developed from late PIE to AG and then within AG) is combined with the synchronic one (how they are used in specific contexts) in order to show that, far from being anomalous, V1 compounds fill lexical gaps that could not, for specified morphological and semantic reasons, be filled by more ‘regular’ V2 ones. Introductory chapters on compounding in morphological theory and in AG place the multi-faceted approach of this book in a modern perspective, highlighting the importance of AG for linguists debating the properties of the V1 type cross-linguistically.
