Book excerpt: Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Composition of the Book of Isaiah in the Light of History and Archaeology The three lectures contained in this volume, which were delivered in the summer of 1909 as the second annual course of the Schweich Lectures, are an attempt to tell in a simple way the story of the book of Isaiah, and are not to be regarded as a commentary upon the book. In many cases I have been content merely to indicate, by means of quotations, that view of the origin and date of particular sections which commends itself to me, and I have made no attempt to give in detail the arguments for the theory which I have thus suggested. Had I done this, the length of the lectures would have been enormously increased, and the amount of detail would, in all probability, have tended to distract attention from the points which I desire particularly to make prominent. I have intentionally ab stained from multiplying references, especially hen referring to uncontroverted facts which are not of vital importance to my argu ment. Although no discussion of the problems of the book of Isaiah can be altogether adequate which is not based on the original Hebrew, I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to keep before myself the needs of English readers. Although no discussion of the problems of the book of Isaiah can be altogether adequate which is not based on the original Hebrew, I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to keep before myself the needs of English readers.I gladly avail myself of this opportunity of expressing my thanks to several friends for help which they have kindly given in the preparation and publication of these lectures. The Rev. C. H. W. Johns, Litt.U., Master of S. Catharine's College, and formerly Fellow and Lecturer of Queens' College, Cambridge, has not only allowed me to consult him on many occasions on questions of Assyriology, but has also read through the first lecture in manuscript. To my friend and colleague, Mr. A. B. Cook, M.A., Fellow and Lecturer of Queens' College, Cambridge, and Reader in Classical Archaeology, I am indebted for much information on Greek archaeology and religion. My obligation to him is indeed much greater than might be supposed from the number of cases in which his name is directly mentioned. My thanks are also due to the Rev. W. Emery Barnes, D.D., Hulsean Professor of Divinity, and to Mr. H. Loewe, who have read these lectures in proof. It is, however, only fair to state that I alone am responsible for the opinions here set forth. For the indexes I am indebted to the willing co-operation of my daughter.

Book excerpt: The study deals with the theological message and composition of the Book of Isaiah and promotes a thesis that an early Jewish reception history helps us to find perspectives to understand them. This study treats the following themes among others: 1 Hezekiah as Immanuel was an important theme in the reception as can be seen in Chronicles and Ben Sira as well as in rabbinical writings. The central event which makes Hezekiah such an important figure, was the annihilation of the Assyrian army as recounted in Isaiah 36-37. 2 The Book of Isaiah was interpreted in apocalyptic milieu as the Animal Apocalypse and Daniel show. Even though the Qumran writings do not provide any coherent way to interpret Isaianic passages its textual evidence shows how the community has found from the Book of Isaiah different concepts to characterize the division of the Jewish community to the righteous and sinful ones (cf. Isa 65-66). 3 Ezra and Nehemiah received inspiration from the theological themes of Isaianic texts of Levitical singers which were later edited in the Book of Isaiah by scribes. The formation of the Book of Isaiah then went in its own way and its theology became different from that in the Book of Ezra–Nehemiah.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research on the book of Isaiah has been dominated by discussions of its unity and authorship. Professor Williamson's important study provides a major and highly original contribution to these key issues, and is based upon a more rigorous methodology than ever used before. Isaiah is usually regarded as the work of two authors - the so-called Isaiah of Jerusalem (Isaiah 1-39) and Deutero-Isaiah (the author of Isaiah 40-55). Professor Williamson argues that the author of Isaiah 40-55was in fact strongly influenced by the work of the earlier writer. Secondly, he demonstrates that the earlier work was regarded as a book which had been sealed up until the time when judgement was past and the day of salvation had arrived, and that Deutero-Isaiah believed himself to be heralding the arrival of that day. Thirdly, and most provocatively, Professor Williamson argues that Deutero-Isaiah both included and edited a version of the earlier prophecies along with his own, intending fromthe start that they should be read togather as a complete whole. This innovative and scholarly work, which sheds much new light on some of the more neglected passages, has had significant implications for future work on this much-loved prophetic book.
