Book Synopsis Complex Product Development Model by : Christer Sandahl
Download or read book Complex Product Development Model written by Christer Sandahl and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2017-07-29 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever tried to explain what quality is? Let's say you know perfectly well how to develop a quality product, but your arguments are undermined all the time by fragmented details. Time and again you have to step back to sort out the details, in order to make a renewed attack. But somewhere along the debate you get stuck. The details never get sorted out. There are too many of them, and you don't share their definitions. After an hour or two you give up, and you revert to the old way of working, although you know you could do so much better. Now there is a solution to your frustration. The complex product development model explains all details and puts them together into a holistic and consistent lodestar for all engineers, managers, and teachers dealing with development of products containing a mix of mechanics, electronics, and programs. This model is an update of best practices from the most applicable development models in the world, scrutinized through a lifetime of product development experience in local, regional, and international product development companies. This book explains Cpdm principles in-depth, with numerous real examples. Difficulties and complexities are illustrated by a wealth of drawings, figures, and tables. You can go back and forth to understand every aspect. Over a product's life cycle, development cost is seldom significant. Development time is sometimes important, but most often the crucial shortage lies in quality, capability, and predictability. The Cpdm toolbox is available—use it to win your debates and start to improve this industry forever.

Book Synopsis Design for Profitability by : Salah Ahmed Mohamed Elmoselhy
Download or read book Design for Profitability written by Salah Ahmed Mohamed Elmoselhy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the success of products significantly depends on the quality of product performance, inadequate management of the product design process can lead to improper performance of products that can result in significant long-term business losses. Design for Profitability: Guidelines to Cost Effectively Manage the Development Process of Complex Products presents a design guideline for complex product design and development that enables you to cost-effectively improve the technical performance of your products and consequently improve your competitiveness in the marketplace as well as improve profitability. The book helps you improve the competitiveness of your organization in the market and eventually improve profitability. It presents a mobile robots design guideline based on an empirical study of the mobile robots design process. This is an unprecedented guideline based on the empirical investigation of the internal aspects of the design process of complex products for cost-effectively enhancing the competitiveness in the market. The book also presents a hybrid lean-agile design paradigm for mobile robots. In addition, it points out key approaches and risks to manage the product development process efficiently. In designing complex products and integrated systems, industrial designers face a dilemma of cost-effectively striking a balance between product development time and product performance attributes. This book shows how and when value is added in product design and development through identifying statistically the most and least correlated design activities and strategies to product performance attributes. Introducing a new paradigm in the field of engineering design, the book gives you key approaches to efficiently manage the product development process.
Book Synopsis Collaborative Multidisciplinary Design Optimization for Conceptual Design of Complex Products by : Edris Safavi
Download or read book Collaborative Multidisciplinary Design Optimization for Conceptual Design of Complex Products written by Edris Safavi and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MULTIDESCIPLINARY design optimization (MDO) has developed in theory andpractice during the last three decades with the aim of optimizing complexproducts as well as cutting costs and product development time. Despite thisdevelopment, the implementation of such a method in industry is still a challenge andmany complex products suffer time and cost overruns. Employing higher fidelity models (HFMs) in conceptual design, one of the early and most important phases in the design process, can play an important role in increasing the knowledge base regarding the concept under evaluation. However, design space in the presence of HFMs could significantly be expanded. MDO has proven to be an important tool for searching the design space and finding optimal solutions. This leads to a reduction in the number of design iterations later in the design process, with wiser and more robust decisions made early in the design process to rely on. In complex products, different systems from a multitude of engineering disciplines have to work tightly together. This stresses the importance of evolving various domain experts in the design process to improve the design from diverse engineering perspectives. Involving more engineers in the design process early on raises the challenges of collaboration, known to be an important barrier to MDO implementation in industry. Another barrier is the unavailability and lack of MDO experts in industry; those who understand the MDO process and know the implementation tasks involved. In an endeavor to address the mentioned implementation challenges, a novel collaborative multidisciplinary design optimization (CMDO) framework is defined in order to be applied in the conceptual design phase. CMDO provides a platform where many engineers team up to increase the likelihood of more accurate decisions being taken early on. The structured way to define the engineering responsibilities and tasks involved in MDO helps to facilitate the implementation process. It will be further elaborated that educating active engineers with MDO knowledge is an expensive and time-consuming process for industries. Therefore, a guideline for CMDO implementation in conceptual design is proposed in this thesis that can be easily followed by design engineers with limited prior knowledge in MDO. The performance of the framework is evaluated in a number of case studies, including applications such as aircraft design and the design of a tidal water power plant, and by engineers in industry and student groups in academia.
