Book excerpt: The classical uniformization theorem for Riemann surfaces and its recent extensions can be viewed as introducing special pseudogroup structures, affine or projective structures, on Riemann surfaces. In fact, the additional structures involved can be considered as local forms of the uniformizations of Riemann surfaces. In this study, Robert Gunning discusses the corresponding pseudogroup structures on higher-dimensional complex manifolds, modeled on the theory as developed for Riemann surfaces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume were written to commemorate Reinhold Remmert's 60th birthday in June, 1990. They are surveys, meant to facilitate access to some of the many aspects of the theory of complex manifolds, and demonstrate the interplay between complex analysis and many other branches of mathematics, algebraic geometry, differential topology, representations of Lie groups, and mathematical physics being only the most obvious of these branches. Each of these articles should serve not only to describe the particular circle of ideas in complex analysis with which it deals but also as a guide to the many mathematical ideas related to its theme.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing the tools necessary for the study of complex manifolds, this comprehensive, well-organized treatment presents in its opening chapters a detailed survey of recent progress in four areas: geometry (manifolds with vector bundles), algebraic topology, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. Subsequent chapters then develop such topics as Hermitian exterior algebra and the Hodge *-operator, harmonic theory on compact manifolds, differential operators on a Kahler manifold, the Hodge decomposition theorem on compact Kahler manifolds, the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations on Kahler manifolds, Griffiths's period mapping, quadratic transformations, and Kodaira's vanishing and embedding theorems. The third edition of this standard reference contains a new appendix by Oscar Garcia-Prada which gives an overview of certain developments in the field during the decades since the book first appeared. From reviews of the 2nd Edition: "..the new edition of Professor Wells' book is timely and welcome...an excellent introduction for any mathematician who suspects that complex manifold techniques may be relevant to his work." - Nigel Hitchin, Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society "Its purpose is to present the basics of analysis and geometry on compact complex manifolds, and is already one of the standard sources for this material." - Daniel M. Burns, Jr., Mathematical Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex manifolds are smooth manifolds endowed with coordinate charts that overlap holomorphically. They have deep and beautiful applications in many areas of mathematics. This book is an introduction to the concepts, techniques, and main results about complex manifolds (mainly compact ones), and it tells a story. Starting from familiarity with smooth manifolds and Riemannian geometry, it gradually explains what is different about complex manifolds and develops most of the main tools for working with them, using the Kodaira embedding theorem as a motivating project throughout. The approach and style will be familiar to readers of the author's previous graduate texts: new concepts are introduced gently, with as much intuition and motivation as possible, always relating new concepts to familiar old ones, with plenty of examples. The main prerequisite is familiarity with the basic results on topological, smooth, and Riemannian manifolds. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in differential geometry, but it will also be appreciated by students of algebraic geometry who wish to understand the motivations, analogies, and analytic results that come from the world of differential geometry.

A total foliation of an [script]n dimensional manifold consists of a [script]n codimension one foliations that are transverse at every point. If a manifold admits a total foliation where all [script]n foliations are transverse oriented, it is said to be totally parallelizable. A necessary condition for total parallelizability is that the manifold be parallelizable. Whether or not this is also a sufficient condition is not known. In this memoir, the author proves a theorem: All compact orientable three dimensional manifolds admit total foliations. This theorem is proven by explicitly constructing total foliations for all compact orientable three manifolds

Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory of complex manifolds and their deformations. Deformation of the complex structure of Riemann surfaces is an idea which goes back to Riemann who, in his famous memoir on Abelian functions published in 1857, calculated the number of effective parameters on which the deformation depends. Since the publication of Riemann's memoir, questions concerning the deformation of the complex structure of Riemann surfaces have never lost their interest. The deformation of algebraic surfaces seems to have been considered first by Max Noether in 1888 (M. Noether: Anzahl der Modulen einer Classe algebraischer Fliichen, Sitz. K6niglich. Preuss. Akad. der Wiss. zu Berlin, erster Halbband, 1888, pp. 123-127). However, the deformation of higher dimensional complex manifolds had been curiously neglected for 100 years. In 1957, exactly 100 years after Riemann's memoir, Frolicher and Nijenhuis published a paper in which they studied deformation of higher dimensional complex manifolds by a differential geometric method and obtained an important result. (A. Fr61icher and A. Nijenhuis: A theorem on stability of complex structures, Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci., U.S.A., 43 (1957), 239-241).

Book excerpt: This volume contains surveys and research articles regarding different aspects of the theory of foliation. The main aspects concern the topology of foliations of low-dimensional manifolds, the geometry of foliated Riemannian manifolds and the dynamical properties of foliations. Among the surveys are lecture notes devoted to the analysis of some operator algebras on foliated manifolds and the theory of confoliations (objects defined recently by W Thurston and Y Eliashberg, situated between foliations and contact structures). Among the research articles one can find a detailed proof of an unpublished theorem (due to Duminy) concerning ends of leaves in exceptional minimal sets.

Book excerpt: A brand new appendix by Oscar Garcia-Prada graces this third edition of a classic work. In developing the tools necessary for the study of complex manifolds, this comprehensive, well-organized treatment presents in its opening chapters a detailed survey of recent progress in four areas: geometry (manifolds with vector bundles), algebraic topology, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. Wells’s superb analysis also gives details of the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations on Kahler manifolds, Griffiths's period mapping, quadratic transformations, and Kodaira's vanishing and embedding theorems. Oscar Garcia-Prada’s appendix gives an overview of the developments in the field during the decades since the book appeared.

Book excerpt: Chapter 1 presents theorems on differentiable functions often used in differential topology, such as the implicit function theorem, Sard's theorem and Whitney's approximation theorem. The next chapter is an introduction to real and complex manifolds. It contains an exposition of the theorem of Frobenius, the lemmata of Poincaré and Grothendieck with applications of Grothendieck's lemma to complex analysis, the imbedding theorem of Whitney and Thom's transversality theorem. Chapter 3 includes characterizations of linear differentiable operators, due to Peetre and Hormander. The inequalities of Garding and of Friedrichs on elliptic operators are proved and are used to prove the regularity of weak solutions of elliptic equations. The chapter ends with the approximation theorem of Malgrange-Lax and its application to the proof of the Runge theorem on open Riemann surfaces due to Behnke and Stein.

This theory generalizes Thurston's theory of surface automorphisms and reveals an intimate connection between dynamics, geometry and topology in 3 dimensions. Significant themes returned to throughout the text include the importance of geometry, especially the hyperbolic geometry of surfaces, the importance of monotonicity, especially in 1-dimensional and co-dimensional dynamics, and combinatorial approximation, using finite combinatorical objects such as train-tracks, branched surfaces and hierarchies to carry more complicated continuous objects.
