Book Synopsis New Trends in the Physics and Mechanics of Biological Systems by : Martine Ben Amar
Download or read book New Trends in the Physics and Mechanics of Biological Systems written by Martine Ben Amar and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2009, many experts in the mathematical modelling of biological sciences gathered in Les Houches for a 4-week summer school on the mechanics and physics of biological systems. The goal of the school was to present to students and researchers an integrated view of new trends and challenges in physical and mathematical aspects of biomechanics. While the scope for such a topic is very wide, we focused on problems where solid and fluid mechanics play a central role. The school covered both the general mathematical theory of mechanical biology in the context of continuum mechanics but also the specific modelling of particular systems in the biology of the cell, plants, microbes, and in physiology. These lecture notes are organised (as was the school) around five different main topics all connected by the common theme of continuum modelling for biological systems: Bio-fluidics, Bio-gels, Bio-mechanics, Bio-membranes, and Morphogenesis. These notes are not meant as a journal review of the topic but rather as a gentle tutorial introduction to the readers who want to understand the basic problematic in modelling biological systems from a mechanics perspective.
Book Synopsis Biofluid Mechanics by : Jagannath Mazumdar
Download or read book Biofluid Mechanics written by Jagannath Mazumdar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofluid mechanics is the study of a certain class of biological problems from the viewpoint of fluid mechanics. Though biofluid mechanics does not involve any new development of the general principles of fluid mechanics, it does involve some new applications of its methods. Complex movements of fluids in the biological system demand for an analysis achievable only with professional fluid mechanics skills, and this volume aims to equip readers with the knowledge needed. This second edition is an enlarged version of the book published in 1992. While retaining the general plan of the first edition, this new edition presents an engineering analysis of the cardiovascular system relevant to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and combines engineering principles. Included in the material of this volume are: the emerging interdisciplinary field of tissue engineering, which deals with the principles of engineering and life sciences toward the development of biological substitutes that restore, maintain and improve tissue function, and cellular and molecular bioengineering, which involves the mechanical, electrical and chemical processes of the human cell and tries to explain how cellular behaviour arises from molecular-level interactions. The added material in this edition is specifically designed for biomedical engineering professionals and students, and looks at the important applications of biofluid mechanics from an engineering perspective. Download or read book Flowing Matter written by Federico Toschi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book, published in the Soft and Biological Matter series, presents an introduction to selected research topics in the broad field of flowing matter, including the dynamics of fluids with a complex internal structure -from nematic fluids to soft glasses- as well as active matter and turbulent phenomena. Flowing matter is a subject at the crossroads between physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, biology and earth sciences, and relies on a multidisciplinary approach to describe the emergence of the macroscopic behaviours in a system from the coordinated dynamics of its microscopic constituents. Depending on the microscopic interactions, an assembly of molecules or of mesoscopic particles can flow like a simple Newtonian fluid, deform elastically like a solid or behave in a complex manner. When the internal constituents are active, as for biological entities, one generally observes complex large-scale collective motions. Phenomenology is further complicated by the invariable tendency of fluids to display chaos at the large scales or when stirred strongly enough. This volume presents several research topics that address these phenomena encompassing the traditional micro-, meso-, and macro-scales descriptions, and contributes to our understanding of the fundamentals of flowing matter. This book is the legacy of the COST Action MP1305 “Flowing Matter”.
Book Synopsis Biological Systems: Nonlinear Dynamics Approach by : Jorge Carballido-Landeira
Download or read book Biological Systems: Nonlinear Dynamics Approach written by Jorge Carballido-Landeira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 106 pages.
