Book Synopsis Data Management in a Connected World by : Theo Härder
Download or read book Data Management in a Connected World written by Theo Härder and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-06-14 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data management systems play the most crucial role in building large application s- tems. Since modern applications are no longer single monolithic software blocks but highly flexible and configurable collections of cooperative services, the data mana- ment layer also has to adapt to these new requirements. Therefore, within recent years, data management systems have faced a tremendous shift from the central management of individual records in a transactional way to a platform for data integration, fede- tion, search services, and data analysis. This book addresses these new issues in the area of data management from multiple perspectives, in the form of individual contributions, and it outlines future challenges in the context of data management. These contributions are dedicated to Prof. em. Dr. Dr. -Ing. E. h. Hartmut Wedekind on the occasion of his 70th birthday, and were (co-)authored by some of his academic descendants. Prof. Wedekind is one of the most prominent figures of the database management community in Germany, and he enjoys an excellent international reputation as well. Over the last 35 years he greatly contributed to making relational database technology a success. As far back as the early 1970s, he covered—as the first author in Germany— the state of the art concerning the relational model and related issues in two widely used textbooks “Datenbanksysteme I” and “Datenbanksysteme II”. Without him, the idea of modeling complex-structured real-world scenarios in a relational way would be far less developed by now. Among Prof.

Book Synopsis Information Economy Report 2006 by : United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
Download or read book Information Economy Report 2006 written by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition of the Report provides unique data on the adoption of ICT by enterprises in developing countries. It also explores ICT policy options in a developing-country context and proposes a framework for national ICT policy reviews and for the design and assessment of pro-poor e-strategies. The Report's analysis of trends in core ICT indicators such as the use of Internet and mobile phone, as well as the role of broadband in promoting the information economy, concludes that the diffusion of ICT in developing countries still needs government intervention in areas where private providers might be discouraged to go because of costs associated to geographic hurdles or the absence of a critical mass of customers. Book Synopsis Cities in a Time of Terror: Space, Territory, and Local Resilience by : H.V. Savitch
Download or read book Cities in a Time of Terror: Space, Territory, and Local Resilience written by H.V. Savitch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about urban terror - its meaning, its ramifications, and its impact on city life. Written by a well-known expert in the field, "Cities in a Time of Terror" draws on data from more than a thousand cities across the globe and traces the evolution of urban terrorism between 1968 and 2006. It explains what kinds of cities have become prime targets, why terrorism has become increasingly lethal, and how its inspiration has changed from secular to religious. The author describes urban terrorism as an attempt to use the city's own strength against itself, forcing it to implode, and delineates three basic logics of terrorist choices for targeting cities. The book also includes a discussion of local resilience - the city's capacity to bounce back from attack - and suggests how that can be sustained. Examples from New York, London, Jerusalem, Istanbul, Moscow, Paris, and Madrid illustrate the book's central themes.

Book Synopsis Cities in Globalization by : Peter Taylor
Download or read book Cities in Globalization written by Peter Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-20 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite traditionally being a strong research topic in urban studies, inter-city relations had become grossly neglected until recently, when it was placed back on the research agenda with the advent of studies of world/global cities. More recently the ‘external relations’ of cities have taken their place alongside ‘internal relations’ within cities to constitute the full nature of cities. This collection of essays on how and why cities are connecting to each other in a globalizing world provides evidence for a new city-centered geography that is emerging in the twenty-first century. Cities in Globalization covers four key themes beginning with the different ways of measuring a ‘world city network’, ranging from analyses of corporate structures to airline passenger flows. Second is the recent European advances in studying ‘urban systems’ which are compared to the Anglo-American city networks approach. These chapters add conceptual vigour to traditional themes and provide findings on European cities in globalization. Thirdly the political implications of these new geographies of flows are considered in a variety of contexts: the localism of city planning, specialist ‘political world cities’, and the ‘war on terror’. Finally, there are a series of chapters that critically review the state of our knowledge on contemporary relations between cities in globalization. Cities in Globalization provides an up-to-date assembly of leading American and European researchers reporting their ideas on the critical issue of how cities are faring in contemporary globalization and is highly illustrated throughout with over forty figures and tables.
