Book excerpt: Highly researched and referenced, Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Health Professionals: A Holistic Approach to Consumer Health educates students about the many complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities that are available, in addition to the more traditional methods that exist. Early chapters provide an overview of both traditional and alternative medicine, scientific method and steps in scientific research, and look at the cost of health care in the U.S. Later chapters introduce students to integrative medicine and provide a thorough overview of CAM practices employed today. Topics that are covered include acupuncture, meditation, herbals and aromatherapy. By reading this text, students will become astute at distinguishing among those traditional and CAM health practices that are helpful, those that have been scientifically tested, and those that may offer no benefit. Case studies throughout the text give students an opportunity to apply material and ideas to real life situations.

Book excerpt: With its signature "DARE to keep kids off drugs" slogan and iconic t-shirts, DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was the most popular drug education program of the 1980s and 1990s. But behind the cultural phenomenon is the story of how DARE and other antidrug education programs brought the War on Drugs into schools and ensured that the velvet glove of antidrug education would be backed by the iron fist of rigorous policing and harsh sentencing. Max Felker-Kantor has assembled the first history of DARE, which began in Los Angeles in 1983 as a joint venture between the police department and the unified school district. By the mid-90s, it was taught in 75 percent of school districts across the United States. DARE received near-universal praise from parents, educators, police officers, and politicians and left an indelible stamp on many millennial memories. But the program had more nefarious ends, and Felker-Kantor complicates simplistic narratives of the War on Drugs. He shows how policing entered US schools and framed drug use as the result of personal responsibility, moral failure, and poor behavior deserving of punishment rather than something deeply rooted in state retrenchment, the abandonment of social service provisions, and structures of social and economic inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer and chronic disease are a rapidly increasing global health burden: according to the Milken Institute, the annual cost to the national US economy of the seven most common chronic conditions will rise to $4.2 trillion by 2023. The data are just as dramatic in Canada, Europe, Australia, and increasingly, in countries in the developing world. As communities, governments, and health organizations worldwide struggle to avoid being swamped by health care costs – not to mention the impact of suffering and poor quality of life – the only long-term, sustainable hope must be based on prevention efforts. This book presents a promising new approach to educating, engaging, empowering, and generating action within communities as part of that broader prevention agenda. The authors review representative global experiences with community based prevention educators, focusing on the prevention coordination work that can be accomplished within geographical areas ranging from local communities to broader regions. Among the findings they reveal in this book are the fundamental elements of successful Community Based Prevention programs – skilled staff, high-quality evaluation, and sustained investment in prevention efforts.

Book excerpt: This book provides a roadmap for modern-day conservatives to advance President Lincoln’s vision to help underserved communities across our country. Underserved is a tangible blueprint for today’s conservative who understands the need for a new and viable political plan of action—one that addresses the needs of the underserved communities that make up these United States of America. Utilizing the concept of the “Party of Lincoln” and the conservative principles set forth over centuries by the movement’s most recognized thought leaders, Underserved examines President Lincoln’s intentions for Reconstruction, President Grant’s aims to implement that vision, and Frederick Douglass’s influence on both men in the process. Underserved brings home the very real impact of a failed plan that has had negative implications on modern America, whether conservative, moderate, or liberal. With this historical plan as the linchpin for creating a framework that services disenfranchised communities, authors Ja’Ron K. Smith and Chris Pilkerton challenge conservative policy makers to employ strategies that mirror those originally presented over 160 years ago, while making necessary concessions for its modern audience—all of which are tied not only to the vision of these American icons, but does so in the context of traditional conservative thinkers who laid the groundwork for the modern-day Republican Party. From education and workforce development to criminal justice reform and healthcare disparities, Underserved makes a bold statement about what is necessary to see a change in the current state of affairs and presents a realistic action plan to make it happen. Underserved identifies the foundational role of key institutions in implementing this proposed plan and ties in the economic and social components necessary for the plan to be met with success—while stressing the critical components of Intentionality, Trust, Collaboration, Outcomes, and Use of Data. This approach makes Underserved a vital read for politicians on both sides of the aisle as much as it is for everyday voters, agents of change, and all those ready to see a plan that will produce results.

With humility, I wanted to bear witness to how interesting, fulfilling, and wonderfully exciting life can be when you live with the belief of the power of positive force. Regardless of the nature of ones work or education, people strive to achieve their creative best output. As a result, one can enjoy the sweet memory of dynamic stories of someone saving a persons life or rescuing a family or even a nation. I can easily imagine how rewarding it would be for a doctor to apply his or her own creative craft to save a persons life despite a 1 percent chance of success. I am reminded over and over again that the secret to happiness is confronting and overcoming adversities even where creative best efforts did not appear adequate. The first experience is heart-pounding electricity. My memories of those first experiences where I took the challenge without cowering are still fresh in my mind. What followed those first experiences energized and excited me as I looked forward to the fruits of my labor. I also want to share my personal realization of unique and dazzling experiences of creative best efforts not only with my peer patent attorneys but also with all other professionals, business people, and my good neighbors on this planet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Chicago’s successful 1893 World Columbian Exposition, the cities of Portland, Seattle, San Diego, and San Francisco all held fairs between 1905 and 1915. From the start of the Lewis and Clark Exposition to the close of the Panama-California Exposition a decade later, millions of Americans visited exhibits, watched live demonstrations and performances, and wandered amusement zones. Millions more thumbed through brochures or read news articles. Fair publicity directors embraced the emerging science of consumer marketing. Conceived to attract new citizens, showcase communities, and highlight farming and industrial opportunities, the four expositions’ promotional campaigns and vendor and exhibit choices offer a unique opportunity to examine western leaders’ perceptions of their city and region, as well as their future goals and how they both fed and tried to mitigate misconceptions of a wild, wooly West. They also expose biased attitudes toward Native Americans, Mexican Americans, Filipinos, and others. Boosting a New West explores the fairs’ cultural and social meaning by focusing on and comparing the promotions that surrounded them. It details their origins and describes why each city chose to host, conveying the expected economic, social, and cultural benefits. It also shows how organizers articulated their significance to urban, regional, and national audiences, and how they attempted to shape a new western identity.
