Book excerpt: El presente volumen se enmarca dentro de la amplia línea de investigación en economía regional desarrollada conjuntamente por la Fundación BBVA y el Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Económicas (Ivie), tomando como referencia el concepto de competitividad. Los autores han pretendido clarificar las condiciones en que tiene sentido hablar de competitividad a escala regional, y también dotar de contenido empírico a este concepto. Para ello han desarrollado un esfuerzo sistemático con el fin de avanzar en el conocimiento de los factores que determinan la competitividad relativa de las comunidades autónomas, comenzando por la elaboración de diversos bloques de indicadores, y estudiando el proceso de formación de capital físico privado, infraestructuras y capital humano a escala regional. Se ha prestado, asimismo, atención preferente a la contribución de la inversión en las nuevas tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones (TIC) en el crecimiento de las regiones, ya que su dinamismo en los últimos lustros ha sido mucho más acusado que el de la inversión productiva en general. La obra analiza también la contabilidad del crecimiento regional registrado en España desde 1985; estudia la aglomeración geográfica de la actividad económica y las diferencias espaciales de productividad a escala provincial, y por último, ofrece un amplio panorama de los cambios en las pautas de distribución espacial de la actividad económica y la población. Este estudio puede resultar de interés para la comunidad de investigadores, así como para los responsables públicos y para todos cuantos desean profundizar tanto en el análisis del crecimiento y de la competitividad con base territorial como en la comprensión de los fenómenos de aglomeración geográfica de la actividad económica.

Book excerpt: La sociedad española no puede aspirar simplemente a regresar a la situación previa a la reciente crisis, en que el crecimiento se asentaba sobre un modelo de baja productividad, condicionado por un peso insuficiente del capital vinculado a las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones (TIC), y un esfuerzo limitado en I+D. Ha surgido así un consenso sobre la necesaria modificación de ciertos rasgos de este modelo para asentarlo sobre bases más sólidas –la denominada economía del conocimiento– que garanticen mejoras en la productividad y mayores niveles de bienestar social. El objetivo de esta obra es valorar en qué medida las regiones españolas se encuentran preparadas para aprovechar las posibilidades que ofrece la economía del conocimiento, analizando hasta qué punto su posición económica relativa está relacionada con la disponibilidad y utilización de recursos o activos del conocimiento, como el trabajo altamente cualificado y determinadas categorías del capital productivo. Algunas actividades económicas son particularmente intensivas en el uso de estos activos, y por ello importa conocer su importancia en el tejido económico de cada región, ya que influye en su capacidad de crecimiento. A lo largo del libro se pasa revista al comportamiento de las regiones durante las últimas fases de expansión y recesión económica, se explica la metodología que permite estimar la importancia de los activos del conocimiento de cara al crecimiento económico, y se analizan dos pilares fundamentales de la economía del conocimiento: el capital humano y las TIC. También se contemplan factores de entorno relevantes que ayudan a entender el distinto grado de penetración de la economía del conocimiento en el tejido productivo regional, y se elabora finalmente un conjunto de indicadores que definen la posición relativa de cada región. No solo los expertos en políticas regionales, sino también los responsables de gestionarlas en las diversas Administraciones y el público en general encontrarán aquí ideas de interés con relación a los temas referidos.

Book excerpt: This PhD thesis deals with the performance of clusters. Even though cluster studies are numerous, a coherent framework to analyze cluster performance is lacking. In this thesis, such a framework is developed, drawing from different schools that deal with clusters. Central in the framework is a distinction to variables of cluster performance related to the structure of a cluster and variables related to the governance of a cluster. Four structure variables - agglomeration ands disagglomeration forces, internal competition, heterogeneity of the cluster and the level of entry and exit barriers - and four governance related variables - the presence of trust, the presence of intermediaries, the presence of leader firms and the quality of collective action regimes - are identified and discussed. The validity of these variables is confirmed in the three case studies, of the port clusters of Rotterdam, Durban, and the lower Mississippi. The strengths and weaknesses of the three port clusters, the importance of the variables discussed above and opportunities for policy and management to improve the performance of clusters are discussed.The results of this study are relevant for cluster scholars and for scholars specializing in port studies. The thesis is also relevant for (port) cluster managers and for managers of firms in (port) clusters, since implications of this study for policy and management in (port) clusters are discussed.
