Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By all accounts, the case of Poland and its segue to market economy and democracy is a success story: 30 years of uninterrupted growth and development, infrastructure expansion, and modernization of the economy and society. Epochal changes have unfolded in a timespan of merely three decades. Change has taken place so fast that children born in late 1980s and onwards cannot remember what life in Poland under communism was like and cannot relate to it. Also, many elderly people, easy victims of romanticizing their own youth, tend to forget. As a result, the uniqueness of Polish transition and transformation, the boldness and efficiency of reforms, and the success that Polish society mastered together, tend to be undermined today both domestically and internationally. Poland has now been a member of the EU for more than 15 years. During that time, Poland’s image on the EU scene evolved from newcomer, through ‘model child’, champion of growth, to – in some respects – a maverick. This volume’s objective is to remind society, old and young, researchers, scholars and practitioners, that Poland’s success is an outcome of well-thought out and bold structural reforms implemented in a swift and timely manner, of society’s support for these reforms, and of third actors’ benign assistance. Looking back on the 30 years since the collapse of communism, and at the over 15 years of EU membership, this book offers an interdisciplinary, comprehensive and critical insight into factors and processes that have led to today’s Poland.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Politics - Region: Eastern Europe, grade: 1,5 (A), Hamburg University of Ecomomy and Policy (European Studies), course: Political Economy of Transition, language: English, abstract: Competitiveness is nowadays one of the central preoccupations of governments and industries wordwide. Especially for reintegrating Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) into the world economy these countries ́ national competitiveness plays a crucial role. Even if national competitiveness has become a widespread concept, there still exists no final definition, as scientists point out. Though a first orientation about the concept of competitiveness can provide Michael E. Porter ́s approach, in which he explains: “The only meaningful concept of competitiveness at the national level is national productivity. [...] No nation can be competitive in everything. A nation ́s pool of human and other resources is necessarily limited. The ideal is that these resources be deployed in the most productive uses possible.” Using Porter ́s definition as a first anchor for the assessment of Poland ́s competitiveness, one has to closer examine Poland ́s level of national productivity.

Book excerpt: The end of communism and accession to the European Union have had a huge impact on Poland. This book provides an overall assessment of the post-1989 transformation in Poland. It focuses in particular on four key themes: economic transformation and its outcomes; the heritage of the past and national identity; regional development in Poland including the implications of EU accession for regional development; and political developments both before and after EU accession. In addition the book shows how changes in all these areas are related, and emphasises the overall common themes. The book is in memory of George Blazyca, of the University of Paisley, whose work on the political economy of transition in Poland is highly regarded, and who did a great deal to support the work of Polish academic colleagues and to promote the work of young scholars.

In reality, however, according to this study, Poland's case is an 'incomplete' transition. Looking at the processes involved in economic transition, covering key issues including financial markets, labour markets, competition and intervention, social security, property rights and attitudes towards the changing political economy, this book provides a wide-ranging and invaluable study of economic development. It will be of great use to economists, those involved in Russian and East European studies, and political scientists.

Book excerpt: Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Central European economies have been moving rapidly toward a common set of goals: political democracy, market-oriented economies and integration into the European and international business community. For businesses, Central Europe offers a unique window of opportunity and, in particular, two comparative advantages: a low-cost qualified workforce and stronger growth rates than mature Western European economies. This opportunity, seized by local entrepreneurs and foreign enterprises alike, is a significant competitive threat to companies not present in the region, or who have not found alternative strategies for increased growth and competitiveness. This book addresses economic transitions in Central Europe and analyzes the problems of Central European integration in the European Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An answer for the economist is a question for a policy maker. Most economists are confronted daily with the practical question of how the world is organised and how the global economy performs? When economists conclude they can grasp certain aspects scientifically, they offer an answer, which becomes, in turn, a question to the policy makers, keen on changing the world for the better. The unique approach presented in the book is the combination of the theoretical considerations with the policy viewpoint analysis, due to the author's own experience with policy-making as deputy premier and finance minister of Poland (twice and very successful as an architect of Polish reforms). Another important feature is a vast, yet comprehensive and deep discussion of the interactions between technology change and society and the economy both, in the world economy and in emerging markets, especially the post-communist ones. Of great importance for sustained development are the institutions. They are not only created and built, but also need to be learnt. Not only theoretical arguments, but also the practical experience demonstrates that faster economic growth is attained by those countries which take greater care to foster the institutional reinforcement of market economy and civic society. Yet progress in market-economy institution building is not in itself sufficient to ensure durable and fast growth. Another indispensable component is an appropriately designed and implemented economic policy, which must not confuse the means with the aims.
