Book excerpt: Athletes like normal individuals suffer from anxiety especially during the competition. Severe anxiety results to poor performance, leading to dissatisfaction to perform well and become a successful athlete. In order to help these athletes, this study explores the relationship of athlete's competitive state anxiety (CSA) and coping skills in order to develop a mental toughness training program (MTTP). A descriptive-correlational method was used in order to derive basketball and table tennis athletes of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Five universities participated in this study resulting to a pool of 192 athlete-respondents. In order to measure the CSA and coping skills of the athletes, the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2, Martens, Vealey, & Burton, 1990) and the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI, Smith, Schults, Smoll, & Ptacek, 1995) was used. Subjecting to statistical analysis, results yield various analyses.

Book excerpt: Mental toughness has been recognized as a key component necessary for optimal athletic achievement. The use of mental toughness training programs has been found to help athletes develop specific psychological skills associated with mental toughness, such as goal setting, positive self-talk, mental imagery, and relaxation. By developing these skills, athletes are better able to control levels of competition anxiety, increase levels of self-confidence, and ultimately, improve performance results. The main purpose of thisstudy was to determine the effects of a specifically designed mental toughness training program for varsity level track and field athletes. Participants included 4 varsity track and field athletes from Western University (Mage = 20.27; SD = 1.26). Although results did not specifically indicate that the mental toughness training intervention positively influenced performance results, all participants reported that the intervention was effective for controlling levels of competition anxiety, increasing self-confidence, as well as improving performance in practice. Additionally, all participants reported high satisfaction with the intervention. Results from this study highlight the importance of mental toughness training for varsity athletes, and can furthermore encourage both coaches and athletes to devote an appropriate amount of training time to the development of psychological skills essential to success in sport.

Book excerpt: Becoming Mentally Tougher In Basketball by Using Meditation is one of the best ways to prepare to reach your true potential. Eating right and training are two of the pieces of the puzzle but you need the third piece to see great results. The third piece is mental toughness and that can be obtained through meditation. Athletes who practice meditation regularly will find they are or have: -More confident during competition. -Reduced stress levels. -Better capacity to concentrate for long periods of time. -Lower muscle fatigue. -Faster recovery times after competing or training. -Overcome nervousness better. -Control their emotions under pressure. What more can you ask for as a basketball player? When considering unlocking their true potential most athletes focus on physical and nutritional goals but often overlook their inner potential through practices like meditation and visualization. It's common to want to see physical benefits from physical exercises but what many athletes don't know is that meditation has been proven to improve physical health and performance. Reaching your peak performance requires that you train and stimulate the body and mind. Not taking this into account can be a main reason why some athletes have trouble moving on to the next level. In order to do your best you must accept that the body and the mind are what will make you complete. Meditation as exercise for the mind helps to strengthen your mind as you would strengthen your body, consistently evolving as you practice it. Physical conditioning, good nutrition, and meditation are the three keys to achieve a state of optimal performance. Most athletes don't pay as much attention to meditation as they should because their mostly worried about appearance and how others perceive them. Results, in meditation, are not something you will see physically but rather in how you feel and in your new ability to control your thoughts and emotions. By starting your meditation sessions and being disciplined and consistent you will notice significant improvements in how you respond to anxiety, pressure, and stress which are three of the major issues most athletes have trouble overcoming in life and when trying to reach your true potential. Book excerpt: Advanced Mental Toughness Training for Basketball will significantly change how hard you can push yourself mentally and emotionally through visualization techniques taught in this book. Want to be the best? To be the best you have to train physically and mentally to your maximum capacity. Visualizing is commonly thought of as an activity that cannot be quantified which makes it harder to see if you are improving or making a difference, but in reality visualizing will increase your chances of success much more than any other activity. You will learn three visualization techniques that are proven to improve your performance under any situation. These are: 1. Motivational Visualization Techniques. 2. Problem Solving Visualization Techniques 3. Goal Oriented Visualization Techniques. These basketball visualization techniques will help you: - Win more often. - Become mentally tougher. - Outlast the competition. - Get to the next level. - Recover faster and train longer. How is this possible? Visualizing will help you to better control your emotions, stress, anxiety, and performance under pressure situations that are often the difference between success and failure. Bringing out the best in yourself in any sport and reaching your true potential can only happen through a balanced training regimen which should include: mental training, physical training, and proper nutrition. Why aren't more people using visualizations to enhance their performance in basketball? There are a number of reasons but the truth is most people have never tried it before and are afraid to try something new. Others don't think that improving their mental capacity will make a difference but they are wrong. Practicing visualization techniques for basketball on a regular basis will allow you to: - Increase your lung capacity by helping you relax muscle tension and decrease workload. - Recover faster after training or competing through breathing techniques that will reduce muscle stress. - Overcome pressure situations. - Train harder and longer without getting as tired. - Reduce your chances of getting cramps and muscle tears. - Improve control over your emotions under stressful conditions. - See results you never thought possible. Visualizing is hard work and requires constant practice which is why only the best do it and take all the glory. Be the best you can be by pushing yourself to your mental limit using visualizations.

Book excerpt: Performance based on open skills may be more influenced by anxiety and self-confidence than performance based on closed skills. An open skill can involve either an individual or team sport with the athlete per-forming in an interactive and ever-changing environment (basketball, tennis). A closed skill is performed in a more stable environment that is relatively predictable and often self-paced (i.e. golf, gymnastics, crew teams). Anxiety may have a different impact on performance on these two types of skills, based on how the influence of the environment and other competitors potentially moderate the anxiety/performance relationship. Evidence from the literature on precompetitive mood and performance suggests that the more an athlete interacts with an opponent, the more likely the opponents actions or performance will exert an influence on the relationship be-tween mood and performance. As there is more contact with the opponent in open skill sports, therefore one could predict that anxiety would have a more detrimental effect on performance in open skill sports than in closed skill sports, due to the greater interaction with opponents and less controls over the environment.

If you are reading this you probably have a young athlete who struggles with in-game confidence and maybe even sports performance anxiety. I am here to help parents understand how to help your young athlete navigate this mental toughness journey. I know where you are and I know how to help you help your young athlete find their mental toughness. I have purchased a lot of books about mental toughness in sports. To be honest, most of the books that we read were not a good fit for young athletes because they were either written for adults or not written for youth athletes in COMPETITIVE sports. There is a difference. Parents! Since there wasn't anything out there for elite athletes I did what every youth sports parent does when they want to help their kid. I took the long journey of ups and downs. I struggled to help my young athlete find his mental toughness. IT WAS ROUGH! However, luckily along the way we found the winning formula thanks to being able to talk with sports icons personally. We launched a podcast together and on it we interviewed sports mental toughness giants like Chauncey Billups, Tywanna Smith, Keiko Yoshimine, Earl Boykins, Jason Richardson and Kobe Bryant! I studied what they did and said based on our interviews and I came up with a mental toughness plan that worked! I followed their journey and their advice. I wrote down what worked for my young athlete and I put it in this book so that you would be able to skip a lot of the struggle and failure part. No need for everyone to struggle right? In this book I am going to share with you what I learned from talking to NBA Athletes, NFL Athletes, EuroLeague Athletes, College Coaches, and College Athletes as well. Does your child perform better in practice than they do when the game or when the "Lights Come On"? Do they seem like they are losing their love for the game? Do you want to help them? If you answered yes to these questions then you are in the right place. This book is the answer that you have been looking for! I can say this with confidence because I have used everything that I am going to share with you in this book with my son and it has worked. What a blessing to get the keys to mental toughness straight from greats! I look forward to sharing what we learned with you! This stuff is a game-changer and it's made specifically for young athletes! Order now to improve your young athlete's mental toughness level for good!
