Book excerpt: Technological advancement compounds the complexity of competitor identification making it increasingly multi-front and multi-dimensional. Strategic groups are an important unit for competition analysis, typically delineated by firms' characteristic similarities or cognitive maps. Both have inadequacies - the former produces methodological artefacts, and the latter is subject to scale limitations, replicability and managers' cognitive blind spots. Hence, the need for alternatives supplementing the existing approaches. We propose a novel grouping methodology based on news co-mentions, reflecting factual corporate events, executives' and journalists' views, and environmental changes. It yields three advantages. First, news depicts interorganizational relationships, alleviating the concern that strategic groups are statistical artefacts. Second, the approach supplements managers' cognition with that of journalists. Third, the public availability of data offers replicability. The proposed methodology is applied to a sample collected from the US high-tech sector. We document commonalities between the co-mention-based groups and the conventionally-used characteristic-based approach. However, the similarity and groups yielded from news co-mentions go beyond characteristic similarities in explaining competitive inclination, suggesting that the co-mention-based approach offers a robust alternative to identifying competitors and strategic groups. Overall, by developing a novel methodology based on a strong theoretical foundation, this study sheds new light on strategic group research.

The scope for such competition is growing with increasing deregulation and technological innovation. As technology continues to improve, the use of "smart markets"--computer-assisted auction systems to clear competitive but complex markets--is likely to become feasible for an ever-expanding group of products and countries. This Note outlines the opportunities for introducing network competition--competition for the market, competition over existing networks, and competition among networks. It briefly considers in each case whether it will become easier or more complicated. It looks at how these opportunities could be applied in different networks. And it concludes with some basic guidelines for introducing competition: 1) the more complex the network and the lower the sunk cost, the more value there is likely to be in introducing competition from other networks. 2) Where technical change is rapid, defining the bonds of natural monopoly will be more difficult and the dynamic benefits of competition will be large. 3) Where government capacity to be benevolently and efficiently recognize natural monopoly and establish barriers to entry is weak, entry probably should not be limited by policy.

Pathological, but psychologically accurate, behavior is produced by "lesioning" the arousal system of these models. A concise introduction to genetic algorithms, a new computing method based on the biological metaphor of evolution, and a demonstration on how these algorithms can design network architectures with superior performance are included in this volume. The role of modularity in parallel hardware and software implementations is considered, including transputer networks and a dedicated 400-processor neurocomputer built by the developers of CALM in cooperation with Delft Technical University. Concluding with an evaluation of the psychological and biological plausibility of CALM models, the book offers a general discussion of catastrophic interference, generalization, and representational capacity of modular neural networks. Book excerpt: April 1996 Debate about whether and how to introduce competition in network industries -- including transport, power, and telecommunications -- is sometimes heated. Klein contends that in case of doubt, policymakers should not restrict the entry of competitive firms in such networks. If they do, he says that entry restrictions should be subject to an automatic test after a set period, and reviewed for costs and benefits. A wave of privatization is sweeping the globe, affecting about 100 countries and adding up to an average of more than $60 billion a year in business in the past decade. The challenge is to ensure that privatization yields clear benefits. Empirical studies suggest that ownership change by itself will often yield results, especially when it reduces government interference. But the regulation required in areas of natural monopoly can become overly intrusive and undermine progress. Real competition is required to generate sizable and lasting welfare improvements. But in infrastructure sectors, the introduction of competition is complicated by the existence of complex transport and communications networks. Debate about whether and how to introduce competition in network industries is sometimes heated. Certain questions recur: Will continuing regulation be needed? Whether and at what terms will private finance be forthcoming? Klein argues that policymakers need to understand how competitive forces can be brought to bear in network industries. He explains: * Common principles that are often lost in technical debates about specific sectors. * Various methods for introducing competition in network industries (sketching broad regulatory requirements along the way). * Competition for the market, and bidding for franchises. * Options for competition for existing networks, including open access arrangements, pooling of homogeneous services such as electricity and natural gas, and timetabling (the competitive determination of service delivery for nonhomogeneous services that need to be sent to specific endpoints). * Options for expanding competitive systems by decentralizing investment in new network capacity. * The option of allowing competition among multiple networks. * The implications of these options for the sectors and for financing industry expansion. In case of doubt, he contends, policymakers should not restrict the entry of competitive firms in such networks. Instead of explicitly defining the relationship between cooperation and competition, I examine lay beliefs about the relationship and the impact of these beliefs on perceptions and behavior. This dissertation consists of two studies. In the first study, I examine the role of peoples' categorization of competitive behaviors as cooperative or non-cooperative in teams. I assess the influence of dialectical reasoning, a culturally-shaped reasoning style, on the categorization of competitive behaviors and the reaction to competitive behaviors within teams. I test my predictions with a laboratory experiment with participants in the US and China. The analyses from this study reveal cultural differences in perceptual and behavioral reactions to competitive behaviors, with differences partially attributed to reasoning style and categorization. In the second study, I examine the role of people's categorization of competitive behaviors as cooperative or non-cooperative in working relationships. I assess the influence of culture and categorization on people's ego-centric network of working relationships. I test my predictions with a survey of working professionals in the US and China. The analyses from this study demonstrate that people who categorize certain competitive behaviors as cooperative are more likely to be more cooperative with people they are more competitive with instead of having exclusively cooperative or competitive relationships. The analyses also reveal national cultural differences in people's networks of working relationships that are partially attributable to categorization of competitive behaviors. By empirically connecting culture and reasoning style to cooperative and competitive behavior in teams and working relationships, this research enhances our understanding of fundamental aspects of organizations, suggesting a new approach to examining the influence of societal factors in behavior within organizations.
