To achieve this goal, the Consortium developed a framework of 10 teaching competencies organized around three overarching questions:• What do graduate students need to achieve by the end of their graduate education to be successful teacher-scholars?• What do graduate students need to understand about higher education to have successful careers as educators?• What do graduate students need to do to be successful teachers during their graduate student careers?Although much work has been done to identify the competencies of effective teachers in higher education, only a small portion of this work has been conducted with graduate student instructors. This is an important area of research given that graduate students are critical in the higher education academic pipeline. Nationally, graduate students teach between 25% and 50% of courses offered at the undergraduate level. Graduate student teaching is also critical because during early teaching experiences teachers establish a teaching style and set of teaching skills, which will endure as graduate students enter the professoriate.It is important to develop a teaching competency framework that is specific to graduate student instructors as they often have unique needs and roles as teachers. For example, graduate student instructors are in the unique position of becoming experts in their field concurrent with learning to teach. Moreover, as many professional development programs for graduate student instructors evolve based upon factors such as available resources and perceived needs of graduate students, this framework will be a useful aid for thoughtfully designing strategic, evidence-based, comprehensive professional development opportunities and programs.

The report calls for further research on the importance of these competencies for college success, reviews current assessments of them and establishes priorities for the use of current assessments, and outlines promising new approaches for improved assessments.

Book excerpt: This study used an iterative Delphi survey process of about 600 faculty, employers, and policymakers to identify writing, speech and listening, and critical thinking skills that college graduates should achieve to become effective employees and citizens (National Education Goal 6). Participants reached a consensus about the importance in critical thinking of the ability to detect: indirect persuasion including the use of leading questions that are biased towards eliciting a preferred response, use of misleading language, use of slanted definitions or comparisons, and instances where irrelevant topics or considerations are brought into an argument to divert attention from the original issue. With regard to effective writing respondents thought that graduates should be able to use active or passive voice where appropriate, use correct grammar, use specific language conventions of their academic discipline, and use language that their audience understands. With regard to speech communication skills respondents reached agreement about the importance of information exchange, conversation management, group communication, and using and understanding spoken English and non-verbal signs. The study was necessitated by having scenarios where Chinese’s students exhibited different learning styles due to the different personality traits. As a future teacher I felt the need to conduct this research and back up several studies that had been done on English learning as a foreign language. The study also checked and evaluated how personality differences affected learning and the personality effects in teachers teaching methods for Chinese college students. The study used qualitative study using literature review as methodology and described in-depth the conceptual philosophy, study strategy, data collecting procedure and techniques, strengths and limitations and ethical issues that were taken into consideration. There are different research philosophies that governed the study with qualitative research including ontology and epistemology. The research reported and discussed the cultural trends and the attitudes as well as approaches that Chinese college students had to their studies. The study also found out that Chinese college students used the major learning styles of rote, silent and passive. The study found that personality traits associated with students have a significant influence on the success of learning English as a second language.
