This book was released on 1991-02-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the most important plant crop products, including oils, starch and protein, are produced in non-photosynthetic tissues such as seeds, roots and tubers. Unlike the situation found in leaves, metabolism in these tissues is not necessarily dominated by plastidial activities, and the provision of energy for biosynthetic processes is therefore different from that in green cells. In this book, leading researchers in the field present a fine overview of the latest thinking on the organisation of metabolism in such organs and the development of the cellular compartments responsible for the synthesis of important crop products. Graduate students as well as researchers in the field of plant biochemistry will find this book of great interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respiration in plants, as in all living organisms, is essential to provide metabolic energy and carbon skeletons for growth and maintenance. As such, respiration is an essential component of a plant’s carbon budget. Depending on species and environmental conditions, it consumes 25-75% of all the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis – even more at extremely slow growth rates. Respiration in plants can also proceed in a manner that produces neither metabolic energy nor carbon skeletons, but heat. This type of respiration involves the cyanide-resistant, alternative oxidase; it is unique to plants, and resides in the mitochondria. The activity of this alternative pathway can be measured based on a difference in fractionation of oxygen isotopes between the cytochrome and the alternative oxidase. Heat production is important in some flowers to attract pollinators; however, the alternative oxidase also plays a major role in leaves and roots of most plants. A common thread throughout this volume is to link respiration, including alternative oxidase activity, to plant functioning in different environments.

Book excerpt: In a world of increasing atmospheric CO2, there is intensified interest in the ecophysiology of photosynthesis and increasing attention is being given to carbon exchange and storage in natural ecosystems. We need to know how much photosynthesis of terrestrial and aquatic vegetation will change as global CO2 increases. Are there major ecosystems, such as the boreal forests, which may become important sinks of CO2 and slow down the effects of anthropogenic CO2 emissions on climate? Will the composition of the vegetation change as a result of CO2 increase? This volume reviews the progress which has been made in understanding photosynthesis in the past few decades at several levels of integration from the molecular level to canopy, ecosystem and global scales.

Book excerpt: Papers from a January 1997 conference held at St. Hugh's College, Oxford, review progress in the area of primary plant metabolism, and highlight the extent to which molecular techniques now influence the investigation and understanding of plant metabolism. Emphasis is centered on processes related to dominant pathways of carbohydrate production and utilization, and material is arranged to reflect the current focus of researchers on three areas of investigation: molecular architecture of selected enzymes of primary metabolism; integration of metabolism between organelles, cells, tissues, and organs; and manipulation of major pathways of carbohydrate metabolism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming and climate change are growing environmental concerns which are much in the scientific, governmental and public eye. The potential impact on freshwater and marine fishes is immense, because most fish have no physiological ability to regulate their body temperature. This volume focuses on the effects of temperature at all levels of organization in fish, with particular emphasis on physiological function: cells, epithelia, organ systems, the whole organism, reproduction, behaviour, pollutant interactions, ecology and population dynamics, with each chapter written by experts in the field. Many chapters also speculate on the long-term physiological and ecological implications to fish of a 2-4°C global warming scenario. Researchers and graduate students in the areas of animal physiology and behaviour, environmental toxicology, population ecology and fisheries biology and management will find this volume of particular interest.

Book excerpt: The techniques of molecular biology offer a powerful means of investigating and controlling the genetic basis of mechanisms operating in living organisms. The development of these techniques in aquatic animals has now reached the stage where important questions relating to growth, development and adaptation to the environment can be addressed at the level of gene expression, and the introduction and expression of novel genes achieved. This volume presents some of the most exciting advances in this rapidly expanding area, with contributions on the evolution of adaptation to low temperature, adaptation to short-term fluctuations in temperature and salinity, gene expression during growth and development, myosin polymorphism and the generation of transgenic fish. As such, it will be of interest to all those working in the fields of marine and freshwater biology and also to those working in aquaculture.
