Book Synopsis Impact of Grazing Stockpiled Tall Fescue of Lactating Beef Cows by : LeAnn Elizabeth Curtis
Download or read book Impact of Grazing Stockpiled Tall Fescue of Lactating Beef Cows written by LeAnn Elizabeth Curtis and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments are described, in which fall-calving cow-calf pairs grazed stockpiled tall fescue at three different endophyte infection levels (20, 51, and 89%) and four forage allowances (2.25, 3.00, 3.75, and 4.50% of BW). A hay feeding treatment was included as a standard for comparison. Each experiment was a randomized complete block design. Average daily gain, BW, BCS decreased as forage allowance decreased and endophyte infection increased. However by weaning, cow BW averaged 528 kg across all treatments. Calf gain was unaffected by endophyte infection level of stockpiled tall fescue, with an ADG of 0.72 kg d−1. Individual calf performance was greatest at forage allowances above 2.25% of BW. However, gain ha−1 was greatest for the 2.25% of BW forage allowance, averaging 155 kg ha−1. A forage allowance of 2.25% of BW is likely the most efficient, since cow weight loss over winter is easily regained, land requirements are low, and calf gain ha−1 is maximized. Additionally, if used for winter stockpiling, renovation of endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures for fall-calving operations is unneeded in most cases.
Book Synopsis Biotechnology in Tall Fescue Improvement by : Michael J. Kasperbauer
Download or read book Biotechnology in Tall Fescue Improvement written by Michael J. Kasperbauer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind publication focuses on the improvement of the feed value of tall fescue and further extension of its adaptability under various environmental stresses. This fascinating work comprehensively explains cell and tissue culture methods which are used to establish somatic cell cultures, select among cells, and regenerate plants with the genetic characteristics of the selected cells. This up-to-date volume includes information on cultural haploid plants from immature pollen grains. It also evaluates the plants under various environmental stresses to identify genotypes with superior characteristics. This book also features research data on somatic tissue culture methods and doubled haploids. Biotechnology in Tall Fescue Improvement is an indispensable resource and useful text for all those involved with agronomy, plant physiology, horticultural science, crop science, and botany.

Book Synopsis Forages, Volume 1 by : Michael Collins
Download or read book Forages, Volume 1 written by Michael Collins and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forages, Volume I, Seventh Edition is the most comprehensive text available for teachers of undergraduate Forages courses. This edition will provide students with a good balance of scientific principles, to aid in integrating the concepts they learn, and practical information on forage identification, plant characteristics, management, and utilization that can be used by forage management practitioners. Grassland ecosystems are extremely complex, including the plant/animal interface as well as the soil/climate/forage interface and the text must support understanding and integration of all of these considerations. The coverage of the science behind the plant characteristics and responses make the book applicable in many parts of the world, while other region-specific management information relates mainly to North America. This edition has been updated to address emerging areas of study, including the use of forage plants as bioenergy crops. The editors also address the renewed national interest in environmental issues such as water quality, global climate change and eutrophication in the Gulf. This edition also addresses the role of forages for wildlife habitat and food sources, another area of increased interest in recent years. These revisions respond to the generational change taking place among forage scientists and teachers in recent years.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.
