Book excerpt: This article reports the results of a project that examined student perceptions of the psychosocial learning environment in a distance education classroom. The study utilized a survey instrument, Distance Education Learning Environments Survey (DELES) that was distributed as a pre-test/post-test to three sections of the same course taught in three distinct formats: traditional classroom instruction, distance learning, and hybrid (partially on-line/partially face-to-face). The DELES survey is a web-based tool specifically designed to assess the learning environment using a standardized, validated instrument. At the beginning of the project, the DELES-Preferred was administered to the three pilot groups. It measures the perception of the "actual" environment, perceptions of the preferred environment, or the "ideal" learning environment of the students. In addition, a brief overview of the DELES instrument is described as well as the implications of the research project findings. Project results, based on the DELES administration, indicate that "Instructor Support" was rated highest by the students enrolled in the course taught in the traditional manner (4.68 mean) closely followed by the Hybrid course (4.66 mean) while the course taught totally at a distance averaged a 3.62 mean. However, "Student Interaction and Collaboration" averaged higher scores in the course taught in the Hybrid manner (4.23) followed by the traditional course (3.97) and then the distance course (3.12). Specific scales of "Personal Relevance," "Authentic Learning," "Active Learning," "Student Autonomy" and "Satisfaction" (scale of affect) are further addressed in the article.

Book excerpt: The classroom climate research suggests that students achieve more academically in warm and supportive environments (Wentzel, 1997, 1998, 2003). Many studies have revealed associations between the classroom climate and students' cognitive and affective outcomes (e.g., Khine & Fisher, 2006). However, studies of tertiary classroom climates are outnumbered by studies carried out at the primary and secondary levels (Nair & Fisher, 2001), with the majority of these studies focusing on student or teacher perceptions of the climate but not both. It is argued in this thesis that examining teacher perceptions is equally important, and they need to be examined alongside student perceptions of the same learning environment. A total of 35 Mathematics tutors and their 651 students enrolled in various Mathematics courses at a large university in New Zealand completed a tertiary classroom climate inventory. Student and tutor perceptions of the classroom climate were investigated and compared with respect to a number of academic and non-academic traits. Overall, tutors reported more positive perceptions of the classroom climate on all factors than did their students, and statistically significant differences between tutor and student perceptions of many aspects of the classroom climate were found. Results also showed that student and tutor perceptions of the classroom climate varied significantly with respect to a number of academic and non-academic variables such as ethnicity, gender, the Faculty students belonged to, and the course stage. A cluster analysis revealed three interpretable profiles that emerged out of students' climate perceptions; the Happy Ones, the Conservatives, and the Discontented Ones. Further analyses revealed that the Discontented Ones achieved at substantially lower levels than both the Happy Ones and the Conservatives. As this research has shown, tutor and student perceptions of the classroom climate may not necessarily match. Differences found between tutor and student assessments of the classroom climate, and how these might relate to academic and non-academic aspects point to a need for educators to become more aware of their teaching practices as well as what their students think about the classroom they are in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older and part-time students are enrolling in institutions of higher education in increasing numbers, yet little research has been conducted to see if these students perceive the campus environment differently from younger, full-time students. The purpose of this study was to compare the perceptions of the college environment of four selected groups of students at Oregon College of Education: older, full-time students (N=50); younger, full-time students (N=50); older, part-time students (N=44); and younger, part-time students (N=36). The objectives were to compare the perceptions of the college environment between older and younger students, full-time and part-time students, and the interactions of age and type of enrollment. The participants in the study completed the College and University Environment Scales (CUES), second edition, which measures a student's perception of the campus environment. An additional Biography Sheet was completed to verify sample selection criteria extracted from the OCE master registration list and to provide descriptive data about the sample. A two-way analysis of variance statistical procedure was used to test the null hypotheses that no significant differences existed among the groups selected. Differences were assessed at the 0.05 level of significance. From the findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: I. Older students perceive the campus environment as more scholarly, polite, considerate and conventional than do younger students. Older students feel less community and friendliness than do younger students. 2. Full-time and part-time students did not differ in their perceptions of the OCE campus environment. 3. Considering the interaction of age and type of enrollment (full-time or part-time) younger, full-time students perceive the OCE campus to be friendlier and more of a community than the other groups studied. Younger, part-time students felt less campus morale than the other groups. On the basis of the findings of the study the following recommendations are suggested: 1. It is recommended that this study be replicated on a number of campuses which would employ the CUES II in a manner similar to this study. Replication would determine whether the findings of this study can be generalized or if they are the result of unique circumstances. Such studies should include, if possible, a larger number of subjects for more reliable statistical comparisons. 2. Since there has been little research related to the perceptions that older and part-time students have of college environment, more studies are needed at Oregon College of Education to provide knowledge about the causes of differences from traditionally full-time, younger students. 3. It is recommended that full-time and part-time students have their perceptions of the OCE college environment reexamined since the results of this study contradict previous studies cited in the Review of Literature, Chapter II. 4. Research is necessary to develop a methodology for assessing the needs of older and part-time students. 5. Further research is recommended using the demographic characteristics compiled from the Biography Sheets of the participants of this study. A study should be made of the relationship of student characteristics such as place of residence, academic major, and whether one is employed or not to see if such factors influence student perceptions of the campus environment.
