Book excerpt: This book, a translation of the French title Technologie des Propergols Solides, offers otherwise unavailable information on the subject of solid propellants and their use in rocket propulsion. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion are developed in chapter one and detailed descriptions of concepts are covered in the following chapters. Specific design methods and the theoretical physics underlying them are presented, and finally the industrial production of the propellant itself is explained. The material used in the book has been collected from different countries, as the development of this field has occurred separately due to the classified nature of the subject. Thus the reader not only has an overall picture of solid rocket propulsion technology but a comprehensive view of its different developmental permutations worldwide.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Methods for Solid Propellant Burning Rate Measurement by :
Download or read book Evaluation of Methods for Solid Propellant Burning Rate Measurement written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Research and Technology Organization (RTO), Advanced Vehicle Technology (AVI), Working Group (WG) 016 (formerly AGARD/PEP Working Group (27) undertook to evaluate methods in use within the NATO propulsion community to measure burning rate in solid propellant rocket systems, with the purpose of identifying similarities and differences between the participating nations. This WG was formed in 1996, consisting of active representatives from 6 of the 15 member nations of NATO, with inputs accepted from 4 other member nations and a couple non-member nations. The NATO RTO/AVT WG 016 sought to contribute to improvements in the burning rate tools to address issues that have plagued the solid propulsion industry for over 40 years. This paper reviews the final results of this study by summarizing the objectives, approach, findings, and recommendations of this working group based on activity from October 1997 to March 2001. Recommendations are reviewed on direct and non-intrusive burning rate measurement methods, data analysis, and performance scaling to support improved prediction of internal ballistics of a full-scale solid propellant motor. AVT WG 016 activities have identified that manufacturer burning rate data may not easily be compared without accounting for industry-wide differences in subscale devices, test methods and scaling analysis methods. The WG recommends the NATO propulsion community review these findings as a means of advancing their own burning rate measurement and analysis methods.

Book Synopsis Additive Effects in Solid Propellant Burning by : H. SILLA
Download or read book Additive Effects in Solid Propellant Burning written by H. SILLA and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to determine the effect of additives on the burning rates of ammonium perchlorate-polyesterpolystyrene solid propellant strands at 1 atm and below. The object of this was to learn more about the mechanism of solid propellant burning. Additives were incorporated either by adding them to the gas in which the propellant burned or by admixing them with the solid. Admixture with the solid produced burning rates for 0.025 to 0.049 in/sec while the rate without additive was 0.031 in/sec. Burning the propellant in an O atmosphere produced a tenfold increase in burning rate over burning it in N. Other oxidizers, e.g., ClO3F, caused a similar increase while H and He had no effect. The O is effective for stoichiometric propellants, and controlling the O flow controls the burning rate. The results are interpreted as showing that the fuel-oxidizer reactions in the gas phase of a burning propellant do not normally involve O which may even act as a catalyst. Burning rates in N atmospheres have a linear pressure dependence from 50 to 760 mm Hg. A comparison was made of these data with the Summerfield burning rate equation. A careful analysis of experimental errors was made with particular attention to the increase in burning rate due to a tilted burning surface. (Author).
Book Synopsis Effects of Normal Acceleration on Transient Burning-rate Augmentation of an Aluminized Solid Propellant by : G. Burton Northam
Download or read book Effects of Normal Acceleration on Transient Burning-rate Augmentation of an Aluminized Solid Propellant written by G. Burton Northam and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instantaneous burning rate data for a polybutadiene acrylic acid propellant, containing 16 weight percent aluminum, were calculated from the pressure histories of a test motor with 96.77 sq cm of burning area and a 5.08-cm-thick propellant web. Additional acceleration tests were conducted with reduced propellant web thicknesses of 3.81, 2.54, and 1.27 cm. The metallic residue collected from the various web thickness tests was characterized by weight and shape and correlated with the instantaneous burning rate measurements. Rapid depressurization extinction tests were conducted in order that surface pitting characteristics due to localized increased burning rate could be correlated with the residue analysis and the instantaneous burning rate data. The acceleration-induced burning rate augmentation was strongly dependent on propellant distance burned, or burning time, and thus was transient in nature. The results from the extinction tests and the residue analyses indicate that the transient rate augmentation was highly dependent on local enhancement of the combustion zone heat feedback to the surface by the growth of molten residue particles on or just above the burning surface. The size, shape, and number density of molten residue particles, rather than the total residue weight, determined the acceleration-induced burning rate augmentation.
