Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Currently, degradation of pretensioned prestressed reinforced concrete (PRC) bridge structures is a serious problem in the United States of America. Since 2000, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is well studied and has become an accepted method to rehabilitate concrete bridges. Design engineers use the ACI 440.2R-17 to determine strength requirements. Additionally, evaluating the deflection of strengthened PRC members is required during the restoration/strengthening design. ACI 440.2R-17 relies on ACI 318-19 for deflection calculations and limits prestressing from yielding under service load levels. This dissertation examines the application of the effective moment of inertia equation given in ACI 318-19 for the determination of deflection after cracking of PRC beams externally strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). The results reported in this dissertation deal with the behavior of partially prestressed concrete beams strengthened with high strength composites. The three major parts discussed are experimental work, analytical investigations, and a parametric study. Experimental results obtained by other researchers were used to verify the results of the analytical procedures developed. The parametric study provides information on the moment-curvature and load-deflection behavior of strengthened pretensioned prestressed concrete flexural members externally strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymers that can be obtained for various concrete strengths, reinforcement ratios, and varying cross-sections. An analytical model was developed to predict the flexural rigidity of pretensioned, partially prestressed concrete beams that are externally strengthened with high strength composites. CFRP sheets were used for the derivation of equations. The proposed model is based on principles of mechanics and the sectional equations available for the analysis of partially prestressed beams. The model is applicable to the full range of prestressed concrete members covering partially and fully prestressed concrete, straight or harped strands, with or without supplemental mild-reinforcing steel, and varying loading conditions. The procedure can be used to generate the entire load-deflection response and through performing the moment-curvature analysis and estimation of stresses and strains in addition to computing the effective flexural stiffness of the strengthened prestressed member. Comparisons of experimental and analytical results show that deflection can be predicted with good accuracy using the developed modified effective moment of inertia equation. The parametric investigation was conducted on the effect of the basic variables namely, cross-section, concrete compressive strength, prestressing steel ratio, amount of carbon fibers, modulus of elasticity of prestressing steel-to-modulus of elasticity of CFRP ratio, modulus of elasticity of carbon fiber composite, spans, and shear span-to-span ratios. The goal of this investigation was conducted to understand the effect of CFRP strengthening to the flexural stiffness. Rectangular cross-sections with straight bonded prestressing tendons strengthened with 1 to 5 layers of unidirectional carbon sheets were analyzed in the parametric study. Lastly, the application of the proposed effective moment of inertia equation to bonded, pretensioned prestressed members, with harped strands depressed at midspan, externally strengthened with CFRP is examined in comparison with the experimental and analytical response curves.

Book excerpt: Following on from the International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation, held in Cape Town in April 2001, this book contains the Proceedings, in two volumes. There are over 170 papers written by Authors from around 40 countries worldwide. The contributions include 6 Keynote Papers and 12 Special Invited Papers. In line with the aims of the SEMC 2001 International Conference, and as may be seen from the List of Contents, the papers cover a wide range of topics under a variety of themes. There is a healthy balance between papers of a theoretical nature, concerned with various aspects of structural mechanics and computational issues, and those of a more practical nature, addressing issues of design, safety and construction. As the contributions in these Proceedings show, new and more efficient methods of structural analysis and numerical computation are being explored all the time, while exciting structural materials such as glass have recently come onto the scene. Research interest in the repair and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure continues to grow, particularly in Europe and North America, while the challenges to protect human life and property against the effects of fire, earthquakes and other hazards are being addressed through the development of more appropriate design methods for buildings, bridges and other engineering structures.

Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THESIS ENTITLED Full-range Behaviour of Concrete Beams Partially Prestressed with Unbonded Tendons submitted by TSO Karmen for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in February 2007 External prestressing can be applied to both new construction and retrofitting of existing reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. The behaviour of prestressed concrete structures with unbonded tendons differs significantly from that of those with bonded tendons after the working stage. To assess the safety of such structures, it is necessary to carry out full-range analysis, with particular attention to the post-peak behaviour. This thesis presents the results of an experimental study of externally prestressed concrete beams with either conventional or non-conventional tendons, which were tested to failure. The specimens tested all had T-sections prestressed by two external tendons with one on each side. Two types of tendon were used, namely 7-wire steel strands of 10.5 mm diameter and aramid fibre reinforced polymer (AFRP) tendons of 13.5 mm diameter. Unlike the steel tendons, the fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) tendons are not prone to corrosion. However, the prestressing operations for FRP tendons had to be modified to suit. In the experiments, different factors were taken into consideration. They included the level of prestressing force, concrete strength, area of non-prestressed steel reinforcement and partial prestressing ratio. - 1 - The full-range behaviour of partially prestressed concrete with either external unbonded steel or fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) tendons was significantly affected by second-order effects, as demonstrated in the strain profiles of top and bottom non- prestressed reinforcement and the variations of curvature and neutral axis depth. During the investigation of tendon force, the friction loss at deviator was found to be much greater than the friction loss estimated from the coefficients of friction given by the manufacturers. The equivalent coefficients of friction of steel and AFRP tendon were studied. Lastly, by using various ductility and deformability indices, the ductility or deformability of partially prestressed concrete with external unbonded tendons were investigated. The most suitable ductility or deformability index is proposed. Book excerpt: Fibre reinforced plastics are increasingly being used as replacements for steel reinforcement in concrete structures. The reinforcement can be untensioned, or it can be in the form of prestressing tendons. It is also suitable for gluing onto the outside of a structure to improve flexural or shear performance. This book provides up-to-date research results to give engineers confidence in their design methods.

Book excerpt: This study presents an analytical model for predicting moment-deformation relationships of partially prestressed concrete joints under generalized load excitations. The proposed joint model comprises three interrelated integral parts: 1) The material constitutive relations, 2) The slip model and 3) The non linear analysis. In the first part, the stress-strain relationships used in the non linear analysis to characterize the behavior of concrete and reinforcing steel under cyclic loading were introduced. A new model for predicting the stress-strain relationship of prestressing steel under cyclic loading was also introduced. The model showed very good agreement with experimentally observed results. In the second part, a slip model, based on a linear relationship between local bond stress and slip, was proposed. Using this model, it was possible to find steel stress, steel strain, bond stress and slip distributions along the bar anchorage length. In addition to its tremendous efficiency in computation, the proposed slip model proved to be accurate when compared with experimentally observed results and also retained most of the accuracy of finite element predictions. The above mentioned parts were combined and implemented in a computer program which, when given proper input, can produce moment-deformation relationship of partially prestressed joints. A parametric evaluation was undertaken on two interior and one exterior typical partially prestressed concrete joints. The proposed joint model provided satisfactory analytical results which are compatible with well established facts pertaining to hysteretic behavior of partially prestressed concrete joints Also, results of the proposed joint model proved to be in good agreement with available experimental results.
