The purposes of this study were to identify behaviors associated with resilience to childhood obesity, and to compare the sensitivity of the Figure Rating Scales (FRS) in reflecting Body Mass Index (BMI). Fifty health professionals in nutrition and 35 low-income, parent-and-child pairs completed the study. Children aged 6-11, perceived as "normal-weight" by their parents, were recruited. Five children had a measured BMI above the 85th percentile. Using a picture-sort method, each participant responded to a series of questions about 13 childhood obesity-related messages. Results included comparison between health professionals, parents, and children about 1) familiarity toward each message, 2) frequency in following the recommendation, 3) perception of ease for others to follow, and 4) perception of effectiveness to help prevent childhood obesity. Health professionals and parents had similar familiarity regarding all 13 messages. However, in terms of practicality, health professionals and parents differed significantly in eight messages that they reported "always taught/followed," seven messages that they "sometimes taught/followed," and two messages that they "seldom or never taught/followed." In most messages, children's observation about what the family followed differed from what parents reported following. In terms of ease for others to follow "Watch portion sizes" and "Tell children to eat all of the meal before getting dessert," health professionals and parental perception differed significantly. In terms of effectiveness in childhood obesity prevention, health professionals and parents agreed on 12 of 13 messages. Health professionals did not find message "Tell children to eat all of the meal before getting dessert" to be effective in preventing childhood obesity, whereas parents did. FRS and measured BMI were significantly correlated among health professionals (r=0.75), parents (r=0.72), and children (r=0.53 for children ages 8-11, r=0.64 when a mother selected a silhouette for her child). For different subgroups, parent-and-child silhouette selection was closely correlated (r= 0.84). However, correlation between child's BMI percentile and silhouette was nonsignificant in most subgroups (r= 0.47). In conclusion, FRS was effective among adults and older children (aged [greater than or equal to] 8) in reflecting BMI but not among younger children (aged 6-7).

Book excerpt: Childhood obesity rates are increasing in the United States, partly because adults, especially parents, are unable to recognize overweight and obesity in children. This study used social comparison processes and personal beliefs about the prevalence/causes/consequences of obesity to address three purposes: (1) to predict how parents determine their child's weight status and their intentions for their children's weight based on social comparisons; (2) to test a model of attribution of responsibility (AOR) for parents and non-parents to predict perceptions of parents' responsibility for children's weight; and (3) to develop a model to examine how parents and non-parents judge children's weight and to predict intentions to control children's weight. For the first purpose, an experimental manipulation provided parents with upward or downward comparisons that were either proximal or distal to their children, and results reveal that parents are less accurate in judging their child's weight when given an upward comparison than when given a control comparison. For the second and third purposes, participants completed the revised AOR model and a number of other established and researcher-generated measures. Only perceptions of causality predicted participants' attributions of parents' responsibility for children's weight. Structural Equation Modeling was used to construct the final model. Results reveal that the models used to predict the intentions to control children's weight were very similar, and unlike that used to predict accuracy of judgments of children's weight. This research was conducted in the hopes of potentially increasing recognition of overweight and obesity in children to slow rising obesity rates.

Though the majority of adolescents report being aware of normative gendered body ideals, how adolescents incorporate or reject these ideals into their own weight-control decisions or sense of self can vary dramatically, largely in reaction to their social experiences with body ideals in the local, immediate contexts of their daily lives. The role of one such local context--schools--has remained largely unexplored in existing literature. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) and multi-level modeling, I investigate the role high school weight cultures play in the development of adolescents' weight-loss behaviors, overweight self-perceptions, and self-esteem. I employ social comparison theories, specifically the idea of who may serve as a likely target for social comparison--general others, similar others, or high status others--to develop hypotheses about which aspects of the school context may be associated with various aspects of adolescents' body weight. Overall, my results indicate that there is a strong relationship between adolescents' weight-loss behavior, self-perception and self-esteem and the weight-related culture in the school. For example, adolescent boys, on average, are significantly less likely to report perceiving themselves as overweight or engaging in weight-loss behaviors when they attend schools where there are many overweight boys in the student body. I also find that there is some variation within the school in terms of which peers are most salient to adolescents' behaviors and self-perceptions. Both boys and girls are particularly impacted by the values and behaviors of similar others, when similarity is defined by same-sex adolescents of a similar body size. For example, on average, overweight adolescent girls are significantly more likely to report engaging in weight-loss behaviors when a higher proportion of overweight girls in their school also are engaged in weight-loss behaviors. The same pattern is found among adolescent boys. Overall, these findings suggest that meso-level social contexts--like schools--may be particularly important to how individuals incorporate macro-level beliefs or values --like gendered body ideals--into their own behaviors and self-concepts.

The development of poor self-esteem in children increases the risk of problem behaviors such as aggression, crime, teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol use, tobacco use, and eating disorders (Brook et al., 2007). Treatment of childhood obesity is multifaceted, requiring behavioral and lifestyle changes for both child and family to achieve a healthy weight (De-Santis-Moniaci & Altshuler, 2007; Plourde, 2006; Ritchie, Crawford, Hoelscher, & Sothern, 2006; Spear et al., 2007; Vaughn & Waldrop, 2007; Wofford, 2008). Therapeutic intervention must enlist the support of the family to reshape children's perception of him- or herself (Harter, 1999). One method shown to result in positive improvements in attaining healthy weight and lifestyle with children is family-based behavioral treatment (FBBT). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of SHAPEDOWN, an interventional FBBT program, on self-esteem and lifestyle habits and family lifestyle habits. The theoretical models for this research was Bandura's social cognitive theory (1999), and the conceptual framework was based on "Familial Approach to the Treatment of Childhood Obesity; Parent and Child Collaboration" (Golan & Weitzman, 2001). A convenience sample of 12 children and 11 parents were recruited from elementary schools and referred by pediatric primary care providers. The data collection measures included a revised self-esteem scale (Harter, 1985), and the Children's Habit and Family Habit inventories. The inventories were administered pre- and post- a SHAPEDOWN intervention for healthy lifestyle and weight management. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to describe the study sample and variables. Pearson product moment correlation and dependent group' t-test was used to analyze the data. Although there were no statistically significant results, correlation demonstrated trending toward the positive effect of SHAPEDOWN and its relationship with children self-esteem and lifestyles habits for families and children. The study was limited by attrition and sample size. This study highlights the continued need to explore the barriers associated with effective provision of treatment for overweight children.

Being well-informed and prepared with strategies to help obese and overweight students is not only the role of school counselors, but something that all teachers and school personnel can learn to do as well. By eliminating discrimination, preventing bullying, and building programs to help children make healthy life-style decisions, school counselors can advocate for all children.

Systematic random sampling was used to select schools while stratified sampling and simple random sampling were used in selecting pupils and teachers who participated in the study. Measurement of weights and heights was done to determine Body Mass Index (BMI), while measurement of skin folds was done to determine body fat percentage. Close-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were used to collect data on the implications of overweight and obesity on health and learning behaviours. Findings of the study revealed that an average of 13.5% of children were overweight or obese. Hypertension, excessive sweating, teasing and peer rejection were common to obese children. In addition, overweight and obese children were reported to perform less than their peers in academic and physical activities. This study rerecommends among other things the establishment of education programs through mass media to raise people's awareness of how overweight and obesity affects children's health, social and classroom learning behaviours as well as performance.
