Book excerpt: The in-season and out-of-season effects of sports participation on academic performance vary depending on the level of play from middle school through collegiate athletics. The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference exists between in-season academic performance and out-of-season academic performance of student-athletes in a low-income high school. The number of students participating in high school athletics has continued to rise for 33 consecutive years as increases in the commercialization of high school athletics affect the athletic identities and academic achievement of student-athletes. Little research has been done to examine the effects of in- and out-of-season play on academic performance at the secondary level. This study examined the in- and out-of-season effects on the academic performance of 130 student-athletes in a low-income high school using a repeated measures design. The average semester GPAs of the student-athletes in- and out-of-season were compared using paired samples t-test procedures. The findings yielded positive and statistically significant differences in academic achievement in-season as compared to out-of-season at p = 0.038. Suggestions for future research include examining the effects of athletic seasons on academic achievement in individual sports and across ethnic groups, longitudinal studies, and qualitative studies to investigate the perspectives of student-athletes.

A comparison between the academic performance of male and female student-athletes (n = 78) and non-athletes (n = 77) from an NCAA Division III institution in New England was conducted using the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ), GPA, and SAT scores. A total of eight 2 x 2 independent groups factorial ANOVAs were conducted to examine whether or not differences existed between male and female student-athletes and non-athletes with regard to GPA, SAT scores, and the six NCQ subscales. Correlations between the six NCQ subscales, GPA, and SAT scores were conducted for all participants. Male student-athletes reported a mean GPA of 3.08 + .41; male non-athletes reported 3.06 + .57; female student-athletes reported 3.11 + .47; female non-athletes reported 3.38 + .46. Despite the mostly university level research conducted, no consensus has been reached regarding the impact of athletic participation on academic performance at the high school level. As a result, the relationship between the in season and out of season school academic performance of high school sophomores and juniors in one high school was investigated in this study. It was determined that there was a significant relationship that existed between academic performance, measured by GPA, and athletic participation. Through an analysis of 249 high school sophomore and junior boys and girls, it was found that athletic participation had a positive impact on academic performance and that impact may be attributable to the difference between male in season and out of season performance.
