Book excerpt: With more states revealed, and more reliable rates inferred, mechanistic schemes for ion channels have increased in complexity over the history of single-channel studies. At the forefront of single-channel studies we are faced with a temporal barrier delimiting the briefest event which can be detected in single-channel data. Despite improvements in single-channel data analysis, the use of existing methods remains sub-optimal. As existing methods in single-channel data analysis are unquantified, optimal conditions for data analysis are unknown. Here we present a modular single-channel data simulator with two engines; a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) engine, and a sampling engine. The simulator is a tool which provides the necessary a priori information to be able to quantify and compare existing methods in order to optimize analytic conditions. We demonstrate the utility of our simulator by providing a preliminary comparison of two event detection methods in single-channel data analysis; Threshold Crossing and Segmental k-means with Hidden Markov Modelling (SKM-HMM).
Book Synopsis Single-Channel Recording by : Bert Sakmann

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single-channel recording has become a widely used tool for the study of ion permeation mechanisms in biological membranes. Whereas the technique might have been considered an "art" after its introduction in 1976, it developed into a relatively simple method after it became possible to obtain high-resistance (several gigaohm) membrane-pipette seals. In the summer of 1982, a course on the technique was held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily. It brought together people from most of the laboratories involved in patch clamping at that time. During the course, it became apparent that the technique had reached a state of maturity. Repeatedly, the opinion was expressed that a detailed description of all the aspects of the technique including representative examples of results should be available. We therefore asked the course instructors, as well as several other colleagues, to provide chapters on selected topics in order to produce this volume. The different variants of patch clamping were described quite extensively in an article by Hamill, Marty, Neher, Sakmann, and Sigworth (Pflugers Archiv 391:85) in 1981. Rather than repeating this survey in an introductory chapter, we chose to reprint that article in the Appendix of this volume (by permission of Springer-Verlag). The methods section will, therefore, go straight into detailed aspects of the technol ogy.

Book excerpt: The combination of faster, more advanced computers and more quantitatively oriented biomedical researchers has recently yielded new and more precise methods for the analysis of biomedical data. These better analyses have enhanced the conclusions that can be drawn from biomedical data, and they have changed the way that experiments are designed and performed. This volume, along with the 2 previous Computer Methods volumes for the Methods in Enzymology serial, aims to inform biomedical researchers about recent applications of modern data analysis and simulation methods as applied to biomedical research. - Presents step-by-step computer methods and discusses the techniques in detail to enable their implementation in solving a wide range of problems - Informs biomedical researchers of the modern data analysis methods that have developed alongside computer hardware - Presents methods at the "nuts and bolts" level to identify and resolve a problem and analyze what the results mean

Book Synopsis Perspectives in Hadronic Physics by : Sigfrido Boffi
Download or read book Perspectives in Hadronic Physics written by Sigfrido Boffi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited and contributed papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Perspectives in Hadronic Physics and sent to the Editors within the deadline. The Conference was held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, from May 12th to 16th, 2003, and was attended by about 100 scientists from 20 countries. The series ofConferences on Perspectives on Hadronic Physics takes place every two years since 1997 and follows the seven Workshops on Perspectives in Nuclear Physics at Intermediate Energies, organized every two years at ICTP since 1983. The aim of these Conferences is to discuss the status-of-the-art concerning the experimental and theoretical investigations of hadronic systems, from nucleons to nuclei and dense nuclear matter, in terms of the relevant underlying degrees of freedom. For such a reason the Fourth Conference has been focused on those experimental and theoretical topics which have been in the last few years the object of intensive investigations, viz. the various approaches employed to describe the structure of hadrons in terms of QCD and QCD inspired models, the recent developments in the treatment of the properties and propagations of hadronic states in the medium, the relevant progress done in the solution of the few- and many- hadron problems, the recent results in the experimental investigation of dense hadronic matter and, last but not least, the physics programs of existing Laboratories and the suggested projects for new Facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landslides are one of the most dangerous geomorphological processes, responsible for losses of human lives and damages to structures, infrastructures, cultural and natural heritage. During the Anthropocene, impacts of human activity on the environment, including recent climate changes, have caused deep alterations to the natural evolution of surficial geologic processes, causing a progressive increase in in the occurrence of landslides. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide an updated overview of the progress in the field of landslide research, covering all the aspects related to the geological event: geomorphological characterization and understanding of triggering and predisposing factors, new technologies applied to the study of evolution of slope phenomena, new methodologies to foresee and mitigate landslide hazards.

Book Synopsis The Digitalization of the 21st Century Supply Chain by : Stuart M. Rosenberg
Download or read book The Digitalization of the 21st Century Supply Chain written by Stuart M. Rosenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to gain a clear picture of the current status and future challenges with regard to the digitalization of the supply chain – from the perspective of the suppliers, the manufacturers, and the customers. They were the target groups of the book. Digitization has touched upon all aspects of businesses, including supply chains. Technologies such as RFID, GPS, and sensors have enabled organizations to transform their existing hybrid (combination of paper-based and IT-supported processes) supply chain structures into more f lexible, open, agile, and collaborative digital models. Unlike hybrid supply chain models, which have resulted in rigid organizational structures, unobtainable data, and disjointed relationships with partners, digital supply chains enable business process automation, organizational flexibility, and digital management of corporate assets. In order to reap maximum benefits from digital supply chain models, it is important that companies internalize it as an integral part of the overall business model and organizational structure. Localized disconnected projects and silo-based operations pose a serious threat to competitiveness in an increasingly digital world. The technologies discussed in this text – artificial intelligence, 3D printing, Internet of things, etc. – are beginning to come together to help digitize, automate, integrate, and improve the global supply chains. It’s certainly an exciting and challenging time for both new supply chain professionals and long-time supply chain professionals.
