Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins by establishing an economic framework upon which to apply the principles of IPM. Then, it looks at the entomological applications of economics, specifically, economic analyses concerning chemical, biological, cultural, and genetic control tactics as well as host plant resistance and the cost of sampling. Lastly it evaluates whether the control provided by a traditional IPM system is sufficient, or if changes to the system design would yield greater benefits.
Book Synopsis The Role of Biotechnology in a Sustainable Food Supply by : Jennie S. Popp
Download or read book The Role of Biotechnology in a Sustainable Food Supply written by Jennie S. Popp and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A challenge of our generation is the creation of an efficient system providing sustainable food and fuel from the land whilst also preserving biodiversity and ecosystems. We must feed a human population that is expected to grow to more than nine billion by mid-century. Agricultural biotechnology is one tool that holds potential promise to alleviate hunger and poverty. However, there are complex and interrelated scientific, social, political and ethical questions regarding the widespread use of biotechnology in the food supply. This edited volume discusses diverse perspectives on sustainable food production systems in terms of challenges, opportunities, success stories, barriers and risks associated with agricultural and food biotechnology. The effects of biotechnology on the environment, ethical and moral issues, potential changes to government policies and economics, and social implications are summarised. This book will interest students, professionals and researchers from the areas of bioengineering, agriculture and ecosystem science to economics and political science.

Book Synopsis Economics of Organic Farming Systems and Policy Options in South Asia by : Yasin Muhammad Asim
Download or read book Economics of Organic Farming Systems and Policy Options in South Asia written by Yasin Muhammad Asim and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is predominately the main sector of South Asia, which employs about 60% of the labor force and contributes 22% of the regional GDP. Most of the farmers are smallholders who are facing the high cost of production incurred mainly on pesticides and fertilizers. The transition from traditional to Green Revolution agriculture, led to mono-cropping patterns, loss of farm biodiversity and dependence on capital. On the other side, organic agriculture was a possible option for the farmers. The book in your hands assessed the profitability of organic production systems in comparison with conventional systems in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal by measuring profit efficiency. The readers will also learn about different socioeconomic factors affecting the profit efficiency of organic and conventional farmers and agriculture policy analysis related to organic agriculture. Since organic agriculture occupies small percentage of total cultivated area in these countries, policymakers and other stakeholders give little attention to it. Thus it will be a good addition to available study material in relation to organic agriculture."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticides have contributed impressively to our present-day agricultural productivity, but at the same time they are at the center of serious concerns about safety, health, and the environment. Increasingly, the public wonders whether the benefits of pesticides - `the perfect red apple' - outweigh the costs of environmental pollution, human illness, and the destruction of animals and our habitat. Scientists and government officials are suspected of promoting commercial interests rather than protecting human welfare.

Download or read book Organic Agriculture, Environment and Food Security written by Nadia Scialabba and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic agriculture is defined as an environmentally and socially sensitive food supply system. This publication considers the contribution of organic agriculture to ecological health, international markets and local food security. It contains a number of case studies of the practical experiences of small farmers throughout the world (including India, Iran, Thailand, Uganda and Brazil) who have adopted fully integrated food systems, and analyses the prospects for a wider adoption of organic agriculture. The book also discusses the weakness of institutional support for nurturing existing knowledge and exchange in organic agriculture.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1980 and 2010, organic farming has become one of the fastest growing segments in agriculture in the United States. Although a national standard for organic agriculture was established by the USDA in 1997 and amended in 2005, organic farming systems are extremely heterogeneous compared to conventional farming methods. A variety of strategies that comply with the USDA guidelines of organic production practices can be applied ranging from high input systems to those with greater reliance on internal processes. This thesis examines the economics of four alternative organic cropping systems that comply with USDA guidelines. The analysis compares the profitability and land management capability of four different organic cropping systems used to produce winter squash, cabbage, potatoes and lettuce. Interactive crop budgets were developed to document both production costs and income streams for each cropping system. The analysis using data from trials between 2005 and 2009 indicate that different systems generate different economic outcomes across the crops, and sometimes the differences are substantial. The ridge-tillage system that relied on cover crops for nitrogen (System 4) yielded the highest revenues for squash production, while System 1, which relies on compost for nitrogen, occasional cover crops and uses conventional tillage, had the highest revenues for cabbage. The economic analysis used here develops a framework to outline the financial implications of adopting each of the four organic cropping systems. When the economics for a full crop rotation across the systems are examined as a whole, large differences are not detected. However, individual crops do respond differently to the different systems, but overall, the high intensity system generated the highest profits.
