Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Endocrinology: A Treatise in Two Volumes, Volume I: Glandular Hormones focuses on animal morphology, physiology, and chemistry and systematic and comprehensive account of endocrine principles from the comparative consideration. The selection first offers information on hypothalamic control of anterior pituitary and neurohypophyseal hormones. Discussions focus on adrenocorticotropin, thyrotropin, gonadotropins, physiological significance of the neurohypophyseal hormones in mammals, and physiological significance of the neurohypophyseal hormones in nonmammalian vertebrates. The text then takes a look at pituitary hormones affecting chromatophores and female gonadal hormones. The publication examines male gonadal hormones and adrenocortical hormones. Topics include action of testicular estrogen and ovarian testosterone, source of sex hormones in the male, factors regulating testicular functions, biochemistry of androgens, and functions of the adrenocortical hormones. The book then tackles chromaffin cell hormones, thyroid hormones, and parathyroid glands. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in glandular hormones.

This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Review of General and Experimental Zoology, Volume 2 is a collection of world literature concerning developments in general and experimental zoology. This book is composed of six chapters, and begins with a survey of the biochemical and serological techniques and their application in experimental taxonomy. The succeeding chapters review the field of general and comparative endocrinology in lower vertebrates, as well as the problems of understanding the fine structure of the synaptic cleft of presumed chemically transmitting synapses. These topics are followed by discussions on structural and functional aspects of the avian lungs and air sacs; the metabolic aspect of heat transfer in biological systems; and the external energy transfer from the organism to the surrounding environment. The final chapter focuses on the experimental studies of neurocranium morphology and growth. This book will prove useful to zoologists and taxonomists.
Book Synopsis Neuroendocrinology by : Luciano Martini
Download or read book Neuroendocrinology written by Luciano Martini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroendocrinology, Volume I, is the first in a two-volume treatise designed to provide a survey of all aspects of the rapidly expanding science of neuroendocrinology. Only in recent years have the relations between the nervous system and the endocrine system come under intensive scrutiny, but their interactions have already been shown to be multiple and diverse. This diversity is reflected in the range of subjects covered. There are chapters on neural control of endocrine function; the effects of hormones on the brain; brain-endocrine interrelations during various phases of development; and the comparative aspects of neuroendocrine integration. The relation of brain chemistry to endocrine function, the effect of drugs on neuroendocrine mechanisms, and the new discipline of clinical neuroendocrinology have also been considered. Not only neurophysiologists and endocrinologists, but pharmacologists, zoologists, biochemists, psychologists, and those in clinical medicine will find the treatise of interest. Parts of neuroendocrinology have been discussed in other works, but this is the first treatise in which an attempt has been made to cover all ramifications of neuroendocrinology. This book can be used both as a text for advanced students and as a reference source.
Book Synopsis Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry V6 by : O Lowenstein
Download or read book Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry V6 written by O Lowenstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry, Volume 6, presents three papers linked by their relevance to comparative neurophysiology. The first paper on high-frequency hearing in mammals examines the sensitivity to, production, and behavioral utilization of high-frequency sound for a wide range of mammals from bats, rodents, whales, dolphins, and seals to the insectivores, primates, edentates, and carnivores. The second paper examines axonal flow and fast transport in nerves. Special attention is given to the differences in substrate and mechanism in slow and fast transport. The neuron is presented as a suitable cell type for the investigation of intracellular transport in general. The third paper on the secretory activity of neurons and related electrical activity presents a comparative assessment of all ""neurocrine"" activities, including those in the service of neuroendocrine coordination or of synaptic transmission of information. Special attention is given to the nature of vesicles containing the neurosecretions and transmitter substances and to the mechanisms of release. The electrical events accompanying such neurocrine activities are discussed.

Book Synopsis Newer Methods of Nutritional Biochemistry V2 by : Anthony Albanese
Download or read book Newer Methods of Nutritional Biochemistry V2 written by Anthony Albanese and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newer Methods of Nutritional Biochemistry: With Applications and Interpretations, Volume II provides information pertinent to nutritional biochemistry, including the development in enzyme concepts and methodology. This book discusses the mechanisms of several inborn errors of metabolisms and explains the methods by which these errors may be detected. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the advantages of body compositional data that are useful in evaluating treatment effects associated with physiological or nutritional experiments. This text then delineates the detection of aberrations in the metabolism of tryptophan, which may be induced by pathological stress. Other chapters consider the impact of hormones on the utilization of several nutrients. This book discusses as well the utilization of the essential nutrients, including amino acids, biotin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, and fat-soluble vitamins. The final chapter deals with principles and methods of nutritional needs in humans. Biochemists, graduate students, and investigators in the life sciences will find this book useful.

Book Synopsis A History of Endocrinology by : V.C. Medvei
Download or read book A History of Endocrinology written by V.C. Medvei and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: o history of endocrinology can be written without reference N to Sir Humphry Davy Rolleston, whose monumental study of the subject appeared in 1936 under the modest subtitle: The Endocrine Organs in Health and Disease with an Historical Review. It was based on the author's Fitzpatrick Lectures at the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1933 and 1934. The lectureship, which dates from 1901, is devoted to the History of Medicine. Rolleston's work as regards scholarship and delivery cannot be surpassed and will remain the solid basis for any further study. It is of interest to note that Rolleston gave the Fitzpatrick Lectures when he was 71 years of age and had his book published when he was 74. By that time he had achieved most of his professional aims and all the honours a distinguished medical career can offer (see Section II). He perceived clearly that endocrinology was "an enormous subject in a most active stage of growth", which "recently has received most valuable help from organic chemists, who have devoted much time to the elucidation of the structure, isolation and synthesis of the hormones". He remarked that the knowledge of endocrinology was expanding with extreme rapidity, and it has been suggested that in this respect it would appear to be itself influenced by a growth hormone. He continued: "Before 1890 there were comparatively few publications dealing with the ductless glands, but in 1913, A.
