Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper discusses performance and risks posed by government-related entities (GREs) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). GREs continue to be a major source of growth and development for the UAE, but they also pose significant fiscal and financial risks. GREs’ debt remains high in the UAE, although it is declining and remains actively managed. To mitigate GREs’ risks, the authorities should build on recent progress and develop an integrated approach, including implementing prudent fiscal policies, enhancing macro- and microprudential frameworks, controlling GREs’ borrowing and integrating them into the public debt management framework, and further strengthening corporate governance and transparency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Covid-19’s impact has been the acceleration of the energy transition worldwide.” Francesco La Camera, Director-General, IRENA The Energy Year Abu Dhabi 2021 has been conceived and developed as a critical tool for understanding the successful energy transition taking place in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and, by extension, the wider Middle East. It is no surprise that energy industry leaders worldwide are looking to the leadership of the UAE as it pursues the long-term goal of a sustainable energy future via ambitious investments and development programmes in clean energy sources such as nuclear and solar energy. “Even in the most drastic scenario in terms of demand, we will still need oil. For us the energy transition is about combining, in the smartest way, all types of technologies to achieve an affordable, reliable and cleaner energy for all.” Christophe Sassolas, UAE Country Chair, TotalEnergies The Energy Year Abu Dhabi 2021 showcases the progress made by all key industry players, both public and private, towards the ambitious UAE Energy Strategy 2050. The report features not only the most relevant oil and gas upstream and downstream projects, but the critical projects enabling the energy transition in the country such as the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, Noor Abu Dhabi Solar PV Plant, the upcoming Al Dhafra Solar PV Project and many others. This tenth edition of The Energy Year’s Abu Dhabi series provides insight to potential investors on the government’s efforts to push the energy industry forwards, providing a clear picture of the UAE’s opportunities at a time when gas is becoming the key enabler of the energy transition.

Book excerpt: Each year this book celebrates achievements of the United Arab Emirates and in so doing it pays tribute to the architect of this stunning success story, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the greatly loved and respected founding father and President of the UAE from its formation on 2 December 1971 until his death on 2 November 2004. Sheikh Zayed displayed enormous wisdom and strength in overcoming the obstacles that faced him in constructing a modern nation. He never faltered on his course and knew exactly what he wanted to achieve - and why. He used to say that 'Wealth is not money. Wealth is in people.' And he devoted his efforts to providing education, health care and social services for all the country's citizens. At the same time he nurtured an environment in which business could flourish and people could live rewarding lives in freedom and peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrocarbons revenues still form the bulk of Abu Dhabi’s GDP and while falling prices are a concern, the emirate has been moving steadily towards its economic diversification targets in line with Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. The past 10 years has seen the non-oil sector expand strongly on the back of business-friendly government policies, as a result of which non-oil sector growth now outpaces that of the oil sector. Outside of hydrocarbons, construction and manufacturing represent the biggest GDP contributors in the emirate, with the construction sector poised to enter a period of renewed expansion and manufacturing identified as a key area for future growth, leveraging the emirate’s natural resources, growing downstream capabilities and strategic location. Elsewhere Abu Dhabi’s financial sector continues to assert itself and the expected 2015 launch of Abu Dhabi Global Market, the UAE’s second financial free zone, is expected to boost activity in the sector. Meanwhile visitor numbers to Abu Dhabi continue to rise, with around 3.5m arrivals in 2014, up 25% on the previous year. This growth is expected to continue as major infrastructure upgrades continue apace. These include the expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport and the development of the 1200-km wide Etihad rail project.

The eight factors used throughout this study comprises of compensation and benefits, rewards and recognition, work environment and culture, recruitment and selection, career development and training, job design and work teams, performance and management evaluation, and communications. Correlation analysis tested the relationship between a profile of the respondents and their perceptions on the level of influence and level of importance of the factors of employee retention, and the difference between the perception of managers and rank-and-file employees on the level of importance and level of influence of the success factors of employee retention. The findings show that the role of the manager in the retention management of the rank-and-file employees was due to the level of influence and level of importance. As to the level of influence, the work environment and corporate culture were assessed by the managers to be the most influential success factor which was followed by performance management and evaluation, and job design and work teams. As to the level of importance, communication was assessed as the most important among all retention factors. The reason is due to good communication skill expected in the hospitality industry. Other considerations was on the recruitment and selection and performance management and evaluation. As a conclusion, the five success factors that helped the hotel industry in retaining their good employees for sustainable operations, include the work environment and corporate culture, performance management and evaluation, job design and work teams, communication, and recruitment and selection. As a result of the study, it is recommended that the hotel management should maintain the relationship of the level of influence and the level of importance with the respondents’ profiles in terms of age, highest educational attainment, hotel classification, position, and years of service basing from their significance and the rejection of the hypothesis.
