This has lead to major advances in applications in a wide range of disciplines such as: the life and medical sciences, including cancer-related studies; environmental science, including studies of pollution and its effects; archaeology and other cultural heritage disciplines; and materials science. Although expansion in application areas is due largely to modern synchrotron sources, many applications will not become widespread, and therefore routinely available as analytical tools, if they are confined to synchrotrons. This is because synchrotrons require enormous capital and infrastructure costs and are often, of necessity, national or international facilities. This seriously limits their scope for applications in research and analysis, in both academia and industry. How many universities, research institutes or even industrial laboratories would have electron microscopes if electron sources cost ú100M or more Hence the need to develop bright but small and (relatively) cheap x-ray sources, not to replace synchrotrons but to complement them. Written by a distinguished team of international authors this exemplary new handbook is based on the COST Action MP0601: Short Wavelength Laboratory Sources. The contents are divided into five main sections. The introductory section provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of radiation, generation mechanisms and short wavelength laboratory sources. The middle sections focus on modelling and simulation, source development: improvement and characterisation and integrated systems: sources, optics and detectors. The final section looks at recent applications.

First, the plasma undulator/wiggler field can be generated by injecting a Gaussian laser pulse with a transverse offset/angle or beating several different HG-modes into a parabolic plasma channel. With a wide Gaussian pulse, the wakefield provides a linear focusing force near the propagation axis that drives the betatron oscillation of the injected electrons. The extra driving force is introduced by the centroid oscillation of the laser pulse. Surprisingly, with the HG-modes, the undulator/wiggler field becomes monochromatically sinusoidal when the strength of each mode matches a special condition. second, the dynamics of both a single electron and an electron beam are well studied to optimize the oscillation qualities. The further theoretical work indicates that the oscillation amplitude and strength for the accelerated electron beam can be sufficiently increased within the first several Rayleigh lengths of propagation by an initial resonance between the betatron and undulator oscillation. As a result, the radiation spectrum can be largely extended, for example to strong gamma-ray regime. Ultimately, the radiation spectrum from the oscillation of an electron beam is calculated. The proposed schemes are capable of generating an x-ray radiation spectrum with a narrow bandwidth or synchrotron-like x/gamma-ray radiation of high energy. It is also demonstrated that these flexible schemes can be tuned to generate radiation carrying well-defined angular momentum.

Book excerpt: This book gives the readers an introduction to experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired by large-scale laser laboratories that are dealing with extra-high peak power and ultrashort laser pulses for research of terawatt (TW), petawatt (PW), or near-future exawatt (EW) laser interactions, for soft X-ray sources, for acceleration of particles, or for generation of hot dense thermal plasma for the laser fusion. The other part of this book is dealing with the small-scale laser laboratories that are using for its research on commercial sources of laser radiation, nanosecond (ns), picosecond (ps), or femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, either for basic research or for more advanced applications. This book is divided into six main sections dealing with short and ultrashort laser pulses, laser-produced soft X-ray sources, large-scale high-power laser systems, free-electron lasers, fiber-based sources of short optical pulse, and applications of short pulse lasers. In each chapter readers can find fascinating topics related to the high energy and/or short pulse laser technique. Individual chapters should serve the broad spectrum of readers of different expertise, layman, undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, and engineers, who may in this book find easily explained fundamentals as well as advanced principles of particular subjects related to these phenomena.

Book excerpt: The Optical Society of America Conference on Applications of High Fields and Short Wavelength Sources, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, from March 20-22, 1997, was an exceptionally exciting conference. This conference was the seventh in a series of topical con ferences, held every two years, which are devoted to the generation and application of high field and short wavelength sources. The meeting was truly international in scope, with equal participation from both within and outside of the US. In the past two years, there has been dramatic progress in both laser and x-ray coher ent sources, both fundamental and applied. The 1997 meeting highlighted these advances, which are summarized in sections 1 and 2 of this volume. Terawatt-class lasers are now avail able in the UV or at high repetition rates. Michael Perry (LLNL) presented a keynote talk on petawatt class lasers and their applications in inertial confinement fusion, while Jorge Rocca (Colorado State University) presented a keynote talk on tabletop soft-x-ray lasers. Genera tion and measurement techniques are becoming very sophisticated throughout the UV and x ray region of the spectrum, and coherent sources have been extended to wavelengths below 30A. Phase control in the x-ray region is also now possible, and new phase-matching schemes in the UV have been experimentally demonstrated. It is clear that a new field of x-ray nonlin ear optics will deveiop rapidly over the next few years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high power blue-green laser was pumped with an array of the dense plasma focus. As the result of optimizing the operating conditions of the dense plasma focus and laser system, the maximum untuned laser output exceeded 2.lmJ corresponding to the energy density 3J/cu cm which is much higher than the typical flashlamp dye laser. The optimum operating conditions of the DPF device and laser system were argon pressure 0.3 torr, dye concentration 6 x 0.0001 mol/liter and 10% output transmission mirror. In order to enhance the efficiency of a blue-green laser through spectrum conversion of the pumping light, a converter dye, BBQ, was mixed in the laser dye solutions. The laser was pumped with the hypocyloidal-pinch plasma radiation source. The maximum increase of laser output at the dye mixture of LD490+BBQ or coumarin 503+bbq was about 80%. The enhancement is mainly due to the abundance of near uv in the pumping source, the fairly good match of the fluorescence band of converter dye with the absorption band of the laser dye, and a small overlap of fluorescence band of laser dyes with triplet-triplet adsorption band of converter dye. Book excerpt: The Laser Sources working group concerned itself with recent advances in and future requirements for the development of laser sources relevant to high-energy physics (HEP) colliders, small scale accelerators, and the generation of short wave-length radiation. We heavily emphasized pulsed terawatt peak power laser sources for several reasons. First, their development over the past five years has been rapid and multi-faceted, and has made relativistic light intensity available to the advanced accelerator community, as well as the wider physics community, for the first time. Secondly, they have strongly impacted plasma-based accelerator research over the past two years, producing the first experimental demonstrations of the laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) in both its resonantly-driven and self-modulated forms. Thirdly, their average power and wall-plug efficiency currently fall well short of projected requirements for future accelerators and other high average power applications, but show considerable promise for improving substantially over the next few years. A review of this rapidly emerging laser technology in the context of advanced accelerator research is therefore timely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various types of compact short-wavelength sources are emerging in the region from EUV to hard X-ray and further to gamma ray. These high-energy photons are usually accessible in a large-scale facility such as SR or FEL, and the compactness of these new technologies provides new possibilities for broader applications in dedicated laboratories or factories. Laser-produced plasma is used for soft X-ray laser and high average power EUV sources for lithography. Laser Compton short-wavelength sources are now entering into practical applications in medical imaging. The performance of these sources critically depends on the laser driver performance. This chapter describes the recent progress of high-brightness, short-pulse solid-state laser technology in close relation to these new compact short-wavelength sources. Pulsed picosecond thin disc laser progress is reviewed with kW average power specifications. Cryogenic laser is reported for the advantage of higher beam quality in large-pulse energy operation.

Book excerpt: A "z pinch" is a deceptively simple plasma configuration in which a longitudinal current produces a magnetic field that confines the plasma. Z-pinch research is currently one of the fastest growing areas of plasma physics, with revived interest in z-pinch controlled fusion reactors along with investigations of new z-pinch applications, such as very high power x-ray sources, high-energy neutrons sources, and ultra-high magnetic fields generators. This book provides a comprehensive review of the physics of dense z pinches and includes many recent experimental results.

Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

Book excerpt: As described by the title the grant funds were used to support a project whose primary goal was the development of tunable coherent sources for the THz-FIR region of the spectrum. The THz or more generally the FIR extends from 0.3 x 10(exp 12) (0.3THz) to 30 x 10(exp 12) (30THz) or alternatively from a wavelength of 1 mm down to a wavelength of 10 gm. It is a range of the spectrum that has been a long standing challenge. Microwave technology which has been extraordinarily successful at wavelengths longer than 1 mm and classical and quantum optical techniques which are extremely effective in the visible, near and mid infrared regions of the spectrum encounter fundamental challenges when extended (respectively) to longer or shorter wavelengths. Continued interest in "opening up" and exploiting the FIR region of the spectrum is based on the scientific questions which in part demand an access to the THz-FIR spectral range. These extend from atmospheric and biophysics to plasma physics and radio astronomy. Important technological applications also exist. Among the examples would be radar modeling, characterization of the response of near millimeter wave (NMMW) systems and the potential for short range high resolution radar. The immediate scientific and engineering goals of the project supported by the equipment grant provide a source that is tunable, narrow band and provides sufficient power for spectroscopic investigations. In the longer term a compact conveniently packaged sources and potential and requirements needed to reach higher power operation are of interest. The grating couples the beam with the electromagnetic field provides distributed feedback which reacts back on the beam and in turn leads to bunching of the beam. The density bunches produce the coherent operation.
