Download or read book Causes and Risks for Autism written by Alessia C. Giordano and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms 'autism' and 'autistic' derive from the Greek word autos meaning self. This is appropriate to describing the autistic behavioural phenotype in which there is a pathological impairment in socialisation and verbal and non-verbal communication, in addition to behaviour and interests that are often highly restricted and repetitive. The autistic individual often appears isolated, and unable to make sense of the world around them. They often reveal an inability to predict and understand the behaviour of others, and perceptions of the world remain fragmented and are not embedded into a coherent pattern or structure. This book discusses the causes and risks of autism from researchers around the globe.

Book Synopsis Overcoming Autism by : Lynn Kern Koegel, Ph.D.
Download or read book Overcoming Autism written by Lynn Kern Koegel, Ph.D. and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been huge advances in our ability to diagnose autism and in the development of effective interventions that can change children’s lives. In this extraordinary book, Lynn Kern Koegel, a leading clinician, researcher, and cofounder of the renowned Autism Research Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara, combines her cutting-edge expertise with the everyday perspectives of Claire LaZebnik, a writer whose experience with a son with autism provides a rare window into the disorder. Together, they draw on the highly effective “pivotal response” approach developed at the center to provide concrete ways of improving the symptoms of autism and the emotional struggles that surround it, while reminding readers never to lose sight of the humor that lurks in the disability’s quirkiness or the importance of enjoying your child. From the shock of diagnosis to the step-by-step work with verbal communication, social interaction, self-stimulation, meltdowns, fears, and more, the answers are here-in a book that is as warm and nurturing as it is authoritative.
Download or read book Theory of Mind written by Scott A. Miller and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive review of the burgeoning literature on theory of mind (TOM) after the preschool years and the first to integrate this literature with other approaches to the study of social understanding. By highlighting the relationship between early and later developments, the book provides readers with a greater understanding of what we know and what we still need to know about higher-order TOM. Although the focus is on development in typical populations, development in individuals with autism and in older adults is also explored to give readers a deeper understanding of possible problems in development. Examining the later developments of TOM gives readers a greater understanding of: Developments that occur after the age of 5. Individual differences in rate of development and atypical development and the effects of those differences. The differences in rate of mastery which become more marked, and therefore more informative, with increased age. What it means to have a “good theory of mind.” The differences between first- and second- order theory of mind development in preschoolers, older children, adolescents, and adults. The range of beliefs available to children at various ages, providing a fuller picture of what is meant by “understanding of belief.” After the introduction, the literature on first-order developments during the preschool period is summarized to serve as a backdrop for understanding more advanced developments. Chapter 3 is devoted to the second-order false belief task. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce a variety of other measures for understanding higher-level forms of TOM thereby providing readers with greater insight into other cognitive and social developmental outcomes. Chapter 6 discusses the relation between children’s TOM abilities and other aspects of their development. Chapters 7 and 8 place the work in a historical context. First, the research on the development of social and mental worlds that predated the emergence of TOM is examined. Chapter 8 then provides a comparative treatment of the two literatures and how they complement one another. Ideal as a supplement in graduate or advanced undergraduate courses in theory of mind, cognitive development, or social development taught in psychology and education. Veteran researchers will also appreciate this book‘s unique synthesis of this critical research.
Book Synopsis Assessing Adolescent and Adult Intelligence by : Alan S. Kaufman
Download or read book Assessing Adolescent and Adult Intelligence written by Alan S. Kaufman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-08-05 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic text--now updated with a new interpretive approach tothe WAIS?-III Assessing Adolescent and Adult Intelligence, the classic text fromAlan Kaufman and Elizabeth Lichtenberger, has consistently providedthe most comprehensive source of information on cognitiveassessment of adults and adolescents. The newly updated ThirdEdition provides important enhancements and additions thathighlight the latest research and interpretive methods for theWAIS?-III. Augmenting the traditional "sequential" and "simultaneous"WAIS?-III interpretive methods, the authors present a new approachderived from Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory. This approachcombines normative assessment (performance relative to age peers)with ipsative assessment (performance relative to the person's ownmean level). Following Flanagan and Kaufman's work to develop asimilar CHC approach for the WISC?-IV, Kaufman and Lichtenbergerhave applied this system to the WAIS?-III profile of scores alongwith integrating recent WAIS?-III literature. Four appendices present the new method in depth. In addition to adetailed description, the authors provide a blank interpretiveworksheet to help examiners make the calculations and decisionsneeded for applying the additional steps of the new system, andnorms tables for the new WAIS?-III subtest combinations added inthis approach. Assessing Adolescent and Adult Intelligence remains the premierresource for the field, covering not only the WAIS?-III but alsothe WJ III?, the KAIT, and several brief measures of intelligence,as well as laying out a relevant, up-to-date discussion of thediscipline. The new, theory-based interpretive approach for theWAIS?-III makes this a vital resource for practicing psychologists,as well as a comprehensive text for graduate students.

Book Synopsis TEMAS (Tell-Me-A-Story) Assessment in Multicultural Societies by : Giuseppe Costantino
Download or read book TEMAS (Tell-Me-A-Story) Assessment in Multicultural Societies written by Giuseppe Costantino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic minority children now comprise over 75 percent of students in 100 of the largest cities in the United States. However, these students have not been given equal access to, nor benefited from, the contemporary mental health system as have their non-minority peers. TEMAS (Tell-Me-A-Story) Assessment in Multicultural Societies examines the health/mental care system in which professional service providers, including psychologists, labor to offer quality care for youth in the United States. The authors ardently support the use of the TEMAS assessment instrument as a useful tool for diagnosis of all youngsters, particularly its use on the growing population of minority children and adolescents. Part I presents a rationale and context for employing TEMAS. Introductory chapters describe the mental health status of the population at-risk, as well as systems of care for youth where assessment and intervention are components. Topics to follow highlight a history of positive TEMAS test reviews with the detail required by instructors for preparing dedicated TEMAS courses. The volume thoroughly outlines cross-cultural studies and illustrates case examples of European-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian-American, and forensic studies. TEMAS (Tell-Me-A-Story) Assessment in Multicultural Societies brings practical insight to instructors who teach standard assessment courses; clinicians, counselors, and school psychologists; assessment specialists; and administrators concerned with mental health services designed for children and adolescents.
