Book excerpt: "Several approaches such as community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) have been promoted to reconcile the preservation of natural ecosystems and the use of their socioeconomic advantages. In the face of mixed results, integrated landscape approaches (ILAs) have emerged to conserve ecosystems and biodiversity while promoting participatory and inclusive resource governance and sustainable local development. Yet, there is still a limited understanding of how ILAs should be operationalised in practice. Using an exploratory sequential mixed method and single case study research design, this research aimed to generate insight into the prospects for operationalising ILAs in northern Ghana. Focusing on landscape governance through community resource management areas (CREMAs), it analyses the opportunities and challenges of implementing ILAs in the Western Wildlife Corridor (WWC). In this regard, it first focuses on stakeholders’ perceptions of landscape governance problems and potential solutions, identifying common concern entry points for ILAs implementation. Second, it analyses land-use conflicts, especially conflicts between farmers and Fulani pastoralists, emphasising the potential of ILAs in resolving such deep-rooted land-use conflicts. Third, the thesis analyses the inclusion of local stakeholders in the CREMA landscape governance. Lastly, it focuses on the negotiation of trade-offs within multistakeholder platforms, analysing factors that influence deliberations. Despite persistent conflicts, power imbalances, and weak governance structures, this thesis identified several prospects for the operationalisation of ILAs such as plurality and diversity of stakeholders engaged in the WWC governance, shared perceptions of problems and solutions, collaboration among stakeholders, and their willingness to engage in a multistakeholder process."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) is a compelling concept - if people are allowed to be custodians of their resources, better management of the resources will result. CBNRM is much more complex and challenging than has commonly been understood, but can provide a way to achieve a more equitable and sustainable approach to the use of natural resources. This book has a focus on Southern Africa. Part I consists of ten chapters. After introducing the CBNRM concept, consideration is given to the following: History as a Determinant of Progress; Economic Foundations; Well-Being, Livelihoods and Business; Institutions and Governance; Stakeholder Analysis; Adaptive Management; Capacity Development and Learning; and Communication for Effective Implementation. Part II is devoted to eight case studies from the Southern Africa region that illustrates some of the issues considered in Part I. They are included to provide material that can be used as site-specific examples and teaching aids to complement general discussion of the issues -- page 4 of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses policy strategies for the effective management of natural resources in Africa within the context of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). While natural resource wealth has the potential to lift many out of poverty, sustain economic growth, and foster political stability, it does not guarantee these benefits. The absolute levels of human development in many resource-rich countries remain low, despite their apparent wealth. The challenge is to adopt policies that better harness the potential of natural resources, not only as an opportunity for development, but also to foster policies and institutional innovations that manage resource wealth equitably and boost human capital. To this end, this volume highlights key opportunities and solutions for harnessing natural resources for sustained economic development and explain how such approaches should be incorporated into the SDG agenda. These opportunities are communicated in the form of policy recommendations that in some cases, are country specific but can (and should) be adapted by individual African countries where applicable. With a broad perspective supplied by a diverse group of authors, this book will be useful for graduate students and academicians studying Africa, development economics, economic policy, and resource management, as well as policy makers, NGOs, and IGOs.

Book excerpt: In Ghana, discourses in the drive for an appropriate, effective and more sustainable natural resource management remains a challenge to both research and policy. Existing policies and debates have ignore or undervalue the vital and intricate relationship between community people and their natural environment which shape and define the traditional cosmology of indigenous people and influence their worlviews and the way natural resources are managed. Although some attempts have been made to integrate both formal and informal management sytems and practices, they fail to properly incorporate the worldviews and spirituality of local cultures in their approach. Using multiple case studies of indigenous cultures of the Upper West Region this book assesses and discusses the intricate relationships in indigenous cultures and the opportunities that these relationship offer in the search for sustainable natural resource management alternatives using a biocultural lens. It would be of enormous value to students and professionals both in and outside the academia as long as the search for sustainable natural resource management option in new globalising system.
