Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory case study was to explore nontraditional community college students' experiences with student support services, their connectedness to the institutions, and their overall satisfaction with the institution. Tinto’s integration framework guided this study to test connectedness and its association with student retention rates. The central research question for this study was: What are nontraditional community college students' perceptions of their overall satisfaction with the institution? The study was conducted at Waynesboro Community College in Waynesboro, NC. The purposeful sample size selected included 10 nontraditional students as research participants. The triangulation of data collection methods used in this study consisted of an interview, journal prompts, and a questionnaire. The data also included field notes and memos were also analyzed by finding commonalities in categories through coding, common themes, and phrases that were synthesized to address the research questions using exploratory analysis. Results indicated that nontraditional students do not feel connected to their institution and need support services that are unique to their needs. Four themes were identified in this study: 1) nontraditional student connectedness is not strong within the college, 2) nontraditional students need additional student support services, 3) nontraditional students with strong academic relationships are satisfied with their college experience, and 4) nontraditional students have personal factors that challenge their success in college. The sub-themes identified are nontraditional students need more knowledgeable and consistent faculty members and they have personal responsibilities that affect their success and need more social interaction in and out of the classroom.

Book excerpt: Community colleges across the nation have struggled with retention issues for decades. Questions of why students drop out and what factors influence the decision to remain or leave college prior to completion persist. Research has uncovered some of the influences on student persistence in higher education; however, community colleges, and to an even lesser degree, vocational programs, have received little attention. This case study examined the influences on student retention in a rural community college vocational education program which has a record of high retention and persistence to graduation rates. The qualitative research methodology employed examined the perceptions of seven current program students, nine program graduates, the sole program faculty member, and nine program advisory committee members. The results of the study yielded the following themes as factors which influence retention in this particular setting: program design, faculty, cohort, social aspects, the instructional environment, institutional support/programs, industry-sponsored events, and industry contributions. The findings suggest that community college student retention in vocational settings is a multi-dimensional phenomenon affected by a host of factors which collectively influence a student's ability to persist to graduation. Future research regarding this topic may be able to utilize the results of this study to further advance the knowledge of student retention strategies in community college vocational settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sense of belonging refers to the extent a student feels included, accepted, valued, and supported on their campus. The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover, belonging is influenced by the campus environment, relationships, and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors, the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. A compendium of research, applications, and approaches to sense of belonging did not exist, so they brought this book into being to serve as a single point of reference in an emerging and promising field of study.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate characteristics of students in the Complete College America (CCA) cohort at a rural Western community college and the relationship of those characteristics with the students’ perception of success. Student graduation and success rates are low at community colleges, nationwide. CCA is actively working with community colleges to improve graduation rates and streamline higher educational. It is important for community college administrators to understand students’ perceptions of factors that influence their educational engagement and success. This research outlines and compiles literature on community colleges, student success, student perceptions, CCA, the CCA cohort, and students’ perceptions of success in college. It used an extended version of The National Survey of Student Engagement (ENSSE) to collect data from community college students in the CCA cohort at a rural Western community college. This survey collected students’ perceptions of personal, institutional, and external attributes as well as their perception of succeeding in college. Descriptive, chi square, and logistic regression analysis were then run on the data. The results of this study can be used to identify high-risk students early and assist them in receiving the services needed to succeed.

Book excerpt: This study explored how community college students perceive certain faculty behaviors, its relationship with students' classroom motivators and how the perception of those behaviors and motivators predicts students' persistence and academic success. The statistics about the low rates of completion in higher education institutions is an issue that researchers and educational organizations are concerned about (Apolinar, 2013; Kolodner, 2015). Addressing this issue, a body of inquiring is focusing on the student-faculty relationship (Kezar & Maxey, 2014) revealing that faculty behaviors and student motivation are related to several students' outcomes (Lancaster & Lundberg, 2019; Wilson & Ryan, 2013). However, less is known regarding effective behaviors for community college faculty that help foster student success (Alexander, Karvonen, Ulrich, Davis, & Wade, 2012; Khandelwal, 2009). Such knowledge is needed in the Dominican Republic (DR), where the community college model is recently being implemented. The research design of this study was a quantitative descriptive and predictive nonexperimental research design, using an online survey. The sample consisted of 352 students from the first and only DR community college. The data was analyzed using independent T-Tests, ANOVA, Canonical Correlation Analysis, logistic and hierarchical multiple regressions. Overall, results indicate that faculty qualities and behaviors accounts for 48.5% in the variance in students’ classroom motivation. Findings reveal in more detail which faculty qualities and behaviors directly or indirectly have a higher influence in student motivation, persistence, and GPA. For example, it was found that encouragement behaviors such as demonstrating cares for student's well-being and praising a student for a job well done, were good predictors of student intent to persist. Fairness, such have realistic expectations for students, has significant positive correlation with students' expectancy for success, while control behaviors, such being authoritative, establishing academic goals, and managing class time, also are relevant, increasing the sense of interest and usefulness for non-traditional students. Success, usefulness, and interest when considered in isolation are good predictors of students' GPA, explaining 17%, 10%, and 6% respectively of the variance. These findings offer more detailed insights to serve as reference for building faculty development programs, fostering faculty instructional methods and practice that meets the diverse student needs in higher education contexts. This study adds to the literature base about community college student success and how it is connected with students' perceptions of faculty behaviors and classroom motivators. Also, it contributes to the empirical work to the limited amount of research currently available on the Dominican higher education context.
