Book Synopsis Facts and Fabrications About Soviet Russia by : Evans Clark
Download or read book Facts and Fabrications About Soviet Russia written by Evans Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facts and Fabrications About Soviet Russia This is a guide-book for searchers after truth in a wilderness of intellectual confusion. It might be called a field key to American information about Soviet Russia. It is designed to enable the reader to identify a fabrication at sight, to make a fair guess at what is a fact and to know just where the truth may be found in the morass of conflicting propaganda. The method used is simple. I have attempted to describe in brief review the most obvious falsehoods about Russia that have passed current in the United States since the October Revolution that swung the Bolshevist group into power, those falsehoods which need no further refutation than subsequent events or the belated denials of their perpetrators. I have also tried to show the source of these fabrications and where they may be expected to appear in the future. On the other hand, I have listed, with brief comments thereon, all the published material on Soviet Russia available in America which can be relied upon the present the facts with a reasonable degree of accuracy. This list includes books, pamphlets, and magazine articles. It has seemed unwise to attempt any survey of newspaper articles. I have, however, listed those daily papers which have shown a capacity to print reliable accounts of Russian conditions under the new regime. Book Synopsis Ayn Rand and Song of Russia by : Robert Mayhew
Download or read book Ayn Rand and Song of Russia written by Robert Mayhew and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1947, more than twenty years after leaving Russia, Ayn Rand testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), which was investigating communist infiltration of the motion picture industry. The focus of that testimony was Song of Russia, a 1944 pro-Soviet film that Rand decried for its unrealistic, absurdly flattering portrait of life in the communist country. Ayn Rand scholar Robert Mayhew focuses on this controversial period of American and Hollywood history by examining both the film and the furor surrounding Rand's HUAC testimony. His analysis provides the first detailed history of any of the pro-Soviet films to come out of 1940s Hollywood. Mayhew begins by offering a brief synopsis of the MGM film, followed by an account of its production, as well as its reception. Most significantly, Mayhew analyzes Rand's appearance before HUAC and discusses the response to her much-maligned testimony. By carefully scrutinizing this one episode in the history of communism and anti-communism in 1940s Hollywood, Mayhew presents a more accurate picture of those times and the issues surrounding them. His study allows for a re-evaluation of the role of communism in Hollywood, the nature of the HUAC, and even the Hollywood Ten. This book should be of interest to anyone interested in the life and thought of Ayn Rand, as well as to anyone interested in the history of Hollywood communism and of American film.

Book Synopsis Revolutions: a Very Short Introduction by : Jack A. Goldstone
Download or read book Revolutions: a Very Short Introduction written by Jack A. Goldstone and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 20th and 21st century revolutions have become more urban, often less violent, but also more frequent and more transformative of the international order. Whether it is the revolutions against Communism in Eastern Europe and the USSR; the "color revolutions" across Asia, Europe and North Africa; or the religious revolutions in Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria; today's revolutions are quite different from those of the past. Modern theories of revolution have therefore replaced the older class-based theories with more varied, dynamic, and contingent models of social and political change. This new edition updates the history of revolutions, from Classical Greece and Rome to the Revolution of Dignity in the Ukraine, with attention to the changing types and outcomes of revolutionary struggles. It also presents the latest advances in the theory of revolutions, including the issues of revolutionary waves, revolutionary leadership, international influences, and the likelihood of revolutions to come. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the nature of revolutions and their role in global history"--

Book Synopsis The personality cult of Stalin in Soviet posters, 1929–1953 by : Anita Pisch
Download or read book The personality cult of Stalin in Soviet posters, 1929–1953 written by Anita Pisch and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1929 until 1953, Iosif Stalin’s image became a central symbol in Soviet propaganda. Touched up images of an omniscient Stalin appeared everywhere: emblazoned across buildings and lining the streets; carried in parades and woven into carpets; and saturating the media of socialist realist painting, statuary, monumental architecture, friezes, banners, and posters. From the beginning of the Soviet regime, posters were seen as a vitally important medium for communicating with the population of the vast territories of the USSR. Stalin’s image became a symbol of Bolshevik values and the personification of a revolutionary new type of society. The persona created for Stalin in propaganda posters reflects how the state saw itself or, at the very least, how it wished to appear in the eyes of the people. The ‘Stalin’ who was celebrated in posters bore but scant resemblance to the man Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, whose humble origins, criminal past, penchant for violent solutions and unprepossessing appearance made him an unlikely recipient of uncritical charismatic adulation. The Bolsheviks needed a wise, nurturing and authoritative figure to embody their revolutionary vision and to legitimate their hold on power. This leader would come to embody the sacred and archetypal qualities of the wise Teacher, the Father of the nation, the great Warrior and military strategist, and the Saviour of first the Russian land, and then the whole world. This book is the first dedicated study on the marketing of Stalin in Soviet propaganda posters. Drawing on the archives of libraries and museums throughout Russia, hundreds of previously unpublished posters are examined, with more than 130 reproduced in full colour. The personality cult of Stalin in Soviet posters, 1929–1953 is a unique and valuable contribution to the discourse in Stalinist studies across a number of disciplines.
