Book Synopsis Soviet Perceptions Of The Oil Factor In U.s. Foreign Policy by : Herbert L. Sawyer
Download or read book Soviet Perceptions Of The Oil Factor In U.s. Foreign Policy written by Herbert L. Sawyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's energy position, and that of the West in general, is vulnerable. The major source of that vulnerability is the potential that oil supplies from the Gulf1 could be interrupted for an extended period. The fact that during the first quarter of 1983 U.S. crude oil imports dropped to 2.8 million barrels a day (mbd) from 4 mbd during the same quarter in 19822 (a very substantial decrease of thirty percent from what. was already a relatively low level) is less comforting than it appears. In spite of this decrease in demand, U.S. reserve stocks could be eliminated by an increased demand for oil stemming from a vigorous economic recovery, in the the West. If, in the context of such a recovery, the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could overcome their current disagreements and introduce some discipline regarding production. levels, they might be able to reestablish a tight supply situation in the world oil market. Moreover, even if such developments do not take place, there is always the chance of a major upheaval in the Middle East-Gulf region, given the volativity of the area, that could be disruptive enough to cause a substantial reduction in oil supplies. In this context, it must be recognized that America's energy vulnerability is inseparable from that of the West in general, because of the fungability of oil.

Book Synopsis The Structure of the Defense Industry by : Nicole Ball
Download or read book The Structure of the Defense Industry written by Nicole Ball and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proponents of arms control and disarmament are often confronted with the argument that reductions in defense expenditure lead to cutbacks in military industries and thus to economic hardship. While a reduction in defense production would cause some economic dislocation, this would be mitigated by the ability of the economy to adapt to changing patterns of production. This book, first published in 1983, assesses the likely effects of reductions in defense industries by an examination of the roles these industries play in national economies. Each chapter discusses industry employment, output, research and development, capital value, profitability, concentration and competition, internal organization and regional employment concentration. Other questions considered include the economic importance of weapons exports, the defense industry as a ‘leading edge’ in maintaining national technological capabilities, and the reliance of individual firms on defense contracting.

Download or read book Soviet Foreign Policy and Southeast Asia (Routledge Revivals) written by Leszek Buszynski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the activity of the Soviet Union in Southeast Asia and the effects of Soviet policy on the region from 1969 to the time of first publication in 1986. In particular, Leszek Buszynski examines the rivalry between the Soviet Union and China, Soviet presence in Vietnam, and the responsive efforts of surrounding regions towards collective security. U.S. policy in the region is a key consideration, particularly in terms of American attempts to placate China and encourage Japan to assist in the defence of the region. With a concluding assessment of regional trends and possible outcomes, this is an important and valuable work for students and scholars with an interest in the history and politics of international diplomacy in Southeast Asia.

Book Synopsis The Price of Aid by : David C. Engerman
Download or read book The Price of Aid written by David C. Engerman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of US and Soviet aid efforts in India during the Cold War “makes a major contribution towards a necessary discussion of the politics of aid” (Times Higher Education). Debates over foreign aid are often strangely ahistorical. Economists argue about how to make aid work while critics bemoan money wasted on corruption, ignoring the fundamentally political character of aid. The Price of Aid turns the standard debate on its head. By exposing the geopolitical calculus underpinning development assistance, it also exposes its costs. India stood at the center of American and Soviet aid competition throughout the Cold War, as both superpowers saw developmental aid as a way of pursuing their geopolitical goals by economic means. Drawing on recently declassified files from seven countries, David Engerman shows how Indian leaders used Cold War competition to win battles at home, eroding the Indian state in the process. As China spends freely in Africa, the political stakes of foreign aid are rising once again. “A superb, field-changing book . . . A true classic.” —Sunil Amrith

Download or read book In Search of Greatness written by Festus Eribo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seminal work in international communication, examining news reports, civic discourse, and images of Africa in Russian press. This book is about power and influence, politics and communication across frontiers--a thoroughly challenging analysis of Russia's foray into African and international communication. The book penetrates the intellectual, social, cultural, political, geographical, and historical aspects of the relationship between the African continent and Russia, before, during, and after the Cold War. The book is well-researched and up-to-date. The study was conducted within the framework of Russian geo-political interests, the belligerent ideological determinism of the Communist era, the implosion of historical materialism, and the delicate post-communist path to democracy, capitalism, and reconstruction. The book will appeal to a global audience of journalists, scholars, political scientists, historians, cultural and social critics, policy makers, and the general public.
